Can Trump actually end birthright citizenship? This week, Donald Trump picked Indian-American entrepreneur Sriram Krishnan as Senior White House Policy Advisor on Artificial Intelligence. The appointment of Chennai-born techie Sriram Krishnan as Senior White House Policy Advisor on AI has triggered a fresh debate that pits Silicon Valley’s tech titans against the populist MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement. At the heart of this clash is a growing tension over the future of US immigration policy and the role that foreign talent, particularly from countries like India, should play in shaping America’s technological landscape. ET Year-end Special Reads It's all Gucci for Indians' luxury craving even as economy shows wrinkles Investing in 2025: Will domestic funds continue to counter FPI sell-offs amid rising valuations? 2024 exposed the underbelly of India's Silicon Valley Following a post by an X user, who wrote, "Did any of yall vote for this Indian to run America", David Sacks, a prominent Silicon Valley entrepreneur and ally of Krishnan, has once again stepped forward to defend his friend amid increasing criticism. — nasescobar316 (@nasescobar316) Sacks responded by emphasizing Krishnan’s qualifications and US citizenship. A community note on the post had already clarified that Krishnan, a US citizen, was selected by President-elect Donald Trump to advise on AI policy, but Sacks took the opportunity to rebut further: "Sriram has been a US citizen for a decade. He’s not 'running America.' He’s advising on A.I. policy. He will have no influence over US immigration policy. These attacks have become crude, and not in the holiday spirit. I’m signing off now. Have a merry Christmas." Sacks’ defense follows a string of attacks from far-right critics, including conservative commentator Laura Loomer. Loomer has been vocal in her disapproval of Krishnan’s appointment, accusing him of betraying the “America First” agenda by advocating for immigration reforms that she claims would undermine American workers. Loomer’s criticisms focus on Krishnan’s support for removing country-specific caps on green cards, which she argues would prioritize foreign workers over American talent. Condemning the “disturbing” appointment of Krishnan as part of the Trump administration 2.0, Loomer wrote on X, “It’s alarming to see the number of career leftists who are now being appointed to serve in Trump’s admin when they share views that are in direct opposition to Trump’s America First agenda.” ALSO READ: Prince Harry was left 'red-faced' over Meghan Markle's actions in Netflix docuseries. The reason might shock you Lambasting the move that according to her does not stand by an “America First policy,” she alleged that Sriram Krishnan’s appointment would work against Trump’s immigration control agenda as the Indian American member in his cabinet “wants to REMOVE all restrictions on green card caps in the United States so that foreign students (which makes up 78% of the employees in Silicon Valley) can come to the US and take jobs that should be given to American STEM students.” Sriram Krishnan gains support However, Sacks and others have pushed back against these accusations, clarifying Krishnan’s stance on immigration. In a series of posts, Sacks explained that Krishnan’s position on green card reform is focused on removing country-specific caps, which currently create long wait times for applicants from countries like India, while applicants from other nations face little delay. "Sriram didn’t say he wants to remove all caps on green cards. ALSO READ: Ro Khanna defends Indian-origin Sriram Krishnan's appointment as Trump's AI advisor; calls it 'American exceptionalism' He said he wants to remove country caps on green cards," Sacks explained. "Right now, every country in the world gets allocated the same number of green cards, no matter how many qualified applicants it has." Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna also weighed in on the controversy , highlighting that Krishnan’s rise to a senior policy role in the US government reflects the values of American exceptionalism, not a threat to it. Khanna posted on X: "You fools criticizing @sriramk as Indian born criticize Musk as South African born or Jensen as Taiwanese born. It is GREAT that talent around the world wants to come here, not to China, and that Sriram can rise to the highest levels. It’s called American exceptionalism." — RoKhanna (@RoKhanna) Khanna’s remarks underscore a key point in the ongoing debate: the notion that the US benefits from attracting global talent, especially in the rapidly evolving fields of technology and AI, which require highly skilled workers. ALSO READ: Panama Canal, Canada and Greenland: Why is Trump teasing US expansion? All you need to know H1-B visa debate and Krishnan's immigration stance A major point of contention in this debate is the H-1B visa program, which allows US companies to hire highly skilled foreign workers, particularly in the fields of technology and engineering. Critics of the program, like Loomer, argue that it is often abused by companies seeking to replace American workers with cheaper foreign labor. On the other hand, supporters like Sriram Krishnan argue that such programs are essential for maintaining the US’s competitive edge in global tech, according to a TOI report. Krishnan has long advocated for reforms to the green card system, emphasizing a merit-based approach that prioritizes highly skilled workers rather than basing allocation on country quotas. Under the current system, applicants from high-demand countries, like India, can face decades-long waiting periods for green cards, while applicants from other nations face little to no delay. By removing country caps, Krishnan believes the US can create a more efficient system that better meets the needs of the country’s technology sector. (The Center Square) – The latest federal numbers show the U.S. deficit is soaring as President Joe Biden heads out of office. The U.S. Congressional Budget Office released its monthly budget review on Monday, which showed that in the first two months of this fiscal year, the federal government has run up a deficit of $622 billion. “That amount is $242 billion more than the deficit recorded during the same period last fiscal year,” CBO said in its report . That figure means the deficit is nearly 40% higher than this time last year. “The most alarming turkey in November was the federal government’s inability to live within its means,” Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said in a statement. “We are only two months into the fiscal year, and we have already borrowed a staggering $622 billion, with $365 billion in the month of November alone." Deficits never surpassed one trillion dollars before the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, they remain well above one trillion and for this next fiscal year are well beyond the pace to surpass $1 trillion. The deficit last fiscal year was about $1.8 trillion. Billionaire Elon Musk, now an advisor to President-elect Donald Trump, lamented the debt, which is about $36 trillion, on X Monday. “If we don’t fix the deficit, everything will suffer, including essential spending like DoD, Medicare & Social Security,” Musk said. “It’s not optional.” CBO did explain that some of the increase is from accounting changes. From CBO: The change in the deficit was influenced by the timing of outlays and revenues alike. Outlays in October 2023 were reduced by shifts in the timing of certain federal payments that otherwise would have been due on October 1, 2023, which fell on a Sunday. (Those payments were made in September 2023.) Outlays in November 2024 were boosted by the shift to that month of payments due December 1, 2024, a Saturday. If not for those shifts, the deficit thus far in fiscal year 2025 would have been $541 billion, or $88 billion more than the shortfall at this point last year, and outlays would have been $38 billion more.”Automotives Cybersecurity Market Analysis, Size, Growth, Competitive Strategies, and Worldwide Demand

Lizzo showed off her figure in a form-fitting orange dress to celebrate Thanksgiving. “Yall wasn’t the only ones eating yesterday 😮💨,” Lizzo, 36, captioned a series of selfies shared via Instagram on Friday, November 29, which showed the “Truth Hurts” singer glowing in an orange off-the-shoulder maxi dress from Hanifa decorated with large flowers. Earlier this week, the “It’s About Damn Time” musician shared a video via TikTok of her workout routine in preparation for Thanksgiving. “Getting ready cus im definitely eating 3 plates tomorrow 🤪,” she captioned the video, which saw Lizzo break a sweat in an all-black workout outfit as she did lunges, squats and lifted weights. Lizzo’s posts come after months of accusations that she used Ozempic — a semaglutide primarily prescribed for adults who struggle with obesity and not approved for casual weight loss — to lose weight, which she has denied. Last month, the singer clapped back against the rumors by dressing up as Ozempic for Halloween. Despite the rumors, Lizzo has been proud of her weight loss journey. “When you finally get Ozempic allegations after 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit,” she wrote via social media in September. In the footage, Lizzo wore a silk robe and brandished a closed-mouth smile, captioning her post, “oZeMpIc oR cOkE?” which was attributed to a “fan” who, according to a screenshot included in her upload, had asked whether the singer had “[used] ozempic” or “[snorted] coke” on a previous image of Lizzo slipping wearing a Yitty bodysuit. (Yitty is the singer’s shapewear brand.) “I’ve been methodical, losing weight very slowly,” Lizzo said in a profile published by The New York Times in April, where she shared that she tries to walk or do Pilates every day . “I don’t really see it because if anyone who’s on a natural weight-loss journey knows, losing weight is actually the slowest thing in the world and you don’t really notice it until you notice it,” she continued. “Also the scale’s not really moving. But anyway, that doesn’t matter. I’m super proud of my current lifestyle.” You have successfully subscribed. There are some days I adore my body, and others when I don’t feel completely positive.” She added, “My body is nobody’s business.”Congress faces government funding deadline after Thanksgiving

Albertina Kerr This century-old stalwart of Portland’s nonprofit landscape offers youth mental health services and group homes for those with intellectual or developmental disabilities, with the goal of empowering people to “lead self-determined lives.” Mica Dorfman, who spent a few weeks at the center’s youth psychiatric care unit when she was 12, credits Albertina Kerr with teaching her life skills like journaling that have helped her return to standard home life and made her an advocate for teen mental health. “Being with other people and talking was something that I really needed,” said Dorfman, whose stay at Albertina Kerr was prompted by the loneliness of the COVID-19 pandemic. But at Bradley Angle, which has a mission to serve people affected by domestic violence, they found programs specifically designed to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ people. The nonprofit is led by interim CEO Margot Martin, who hopes to assist survivors of domestic violence who don’t know where to turn. Working with Bradley Angle staffers who identified with them, Joestar said, “has been one of the biggest strengths I could have, not only having that gender identity, but having the lived experience, and the understanding of some of the things I’d been going through. It made it easier to actually talk, and to come here, and put trust in these people.” Read the story . The Commons Law Center The Commons Law Center offers a free tenant defense clinic to help people facing eviction get a free consultation and evaluation of their case, as well as get an overview of their rights. The center’s attorneys work to not only protect legal rights and educate tenants, but also to keep people housed and off the streets. Eviction prevention is particularly important to members of the LGTBQ+ community and people with disabilities, who are three times more likely to appear at landlord tenant court. Kamron Graham, a lawyer who serves as executive director, sees the need for her group’s services with clients every day of the week. “A lot of people assume that if they tell their story, the court will understand,” Graham said. “But eviction court follows strict rules, so our role is to ensure tenants know what they’re facing and how best to proceed.” Read the story . Programs include music workshops and special concerts while the nonprofit works towards opening its own arts venue. “We hope that it is a safe, welcoming and inclusive third space for young people,” said André Middleton, Friends of Noise executive director, “a space where they can find their voices, where they are producing events for their community, by their community.” Read the story . Please become a subscriber today at OregonLive.com/subscribePolice arrested a 26-year-old man on Monday in the Manhattan killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO after they say a Pennsylvania McDonald's worker alerted authorities to a customer who resembled the suspected gunman. The suspect, identified by police as Luigi Nicholas Mangione, had a gun believed to be the one used in Wednesday’s attack on Brian Thompson , as well as writings expressing anger at corporate America, police said. Here are some of the latest developments in the ongoing investigation: Mangione was taken into custody at around 9:15 a.m. after police received a tip that he was eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 85 miles (137 kilometers) east of Pittsburgh, police said. Mangione was being held in Pennsylvania on gun charges and will eventually be extradited to New York to face charges in connection with Thompson’s death, said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. In addition to a three-page, handwritten document that suggests he harbored “ill will toward corporate America,” Kenny said Mangione also had a ghost gun , a type of weapon that can be assembled at home and is difficult to trace. Officers questioned Mangione, who was acting suspiciously and carrying multiple fraudulent IDs, as well as a U.S. passport, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference. Officers also found a suppressor, “consistent with the weapon used in the murder,” the commissioner said. He had clothing and a mask similar to those worn by the shooter and a fraudulent New Jersey ID matching one the suspect used to check into a New York City hostel before the shooting, Tisch said. Kenny said Mangione was born and raised in Maryland, has ties to San Francisco and that his last known address is in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mangione, who was valedictorian of his Maryland prep school, earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a university spokesman told The Associated Press on Monday. He learned to code in high school and helped start a club at Penn for people interested in gaming and game design, according to a 2018 story in Penn Today, a campus publication. His social media posts also suggest that he belonged to the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. They also show him taking part in a 2019 program at Stanford University, and in photos with family and friends at the Jersey Shore and in Hawaii, San Diego, Puerto Rico, and other destinations. The Gilman School, from which Mangione graduated in 2016, is one of Baltimore’s elite prep schools. Some of the city’s wealthiest and most prominent people, including Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr., have had children attend the school. Its alumni include sportswriter Frank Deford and former Arizona Gov. Fife Symington. In his valedictory speech, Luigi Mangione described his classmates’ “incredible courage to explore the unknown and try new things,” according to a post on the school website. He praised their collective inventiveness and pioneering mindset. Mangione comes from a prominent Maryland family. His grandfather Nick Mangione, who died in 2008, was a successful real estate developer. One of his best-known projects was Turf Valley Resort, a sprawling luxury retreat and conference center outside Baltimore that he purchased in 1978. The father of 10 children, Nick Mangione prepared his five sons — including Luigi Mangione’s father, Louis Mangione — to help manage the family business, according to a 2003 Washington Post report. The Mangione family also purchased Hayfields Country Club north of Baltimore in 1986. On Monday, Baltimore County police officers blocked off an entrance to the property, which public records link to Luigi Mangione’s parents. A swarm of reporters and photographers gathered outside the entrance. Luigi Mangione is one of 37 grandchildren of Nick Mangione, according to his obituary. Luigi Mangione's grandparents donated to charities through the Mangione Family Foundation, according to a statement from Loyola University commemorating Nick Mangione’s wife’s death in 2023. They donated to various causes ranging from Catholic organizations to colleges and the arts. One of Luigi Mangione’s cousins is Republican Maryland state legislator Nino Mangione. A spokesman for the lawmaker's office confirmed the relationship Monday. Police said the person who killed Thompson left a hostel on Manhattan's Upper West Side at 5:41 a.m. on Wednesday. Just 11 minutes later, he was seen on surveillance video walking back and forth in front of the New York Hilton Midtown, wearing a distinctive backpack. At 6:44 a.m., he shot Thompson at a side entrance to the hotel, fled on foot, then climbed aboard a bicycle and within four minutes had entered Central Park. Another security camera recorded the gunman leaving the park near the American Museum of Natural History at 6:56 a.m. still on the bicycle but without the backpack. After getting in a taxi, he headed north to a bus terminal near the George Washington Bridge, arriving at around 7:30 a.m. From there, the trail of video evidence runs cold. Police have not located video of the suspected shooter exiting the building, leading them to believe he likely took a bus out of town. Police said they are still investigating the path the suspect took to Pennsylvania. “This just happened this morning," Kenny said. "We’ll be working, backtracking his steps from New York to Altoona, Pennsylvania,” Kenny said. His threat was directed at countries in the so-called BRIC alliance, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have applied to become members and several other countries have expressed interest in joining. Related Story: Dollar Dominance Challenged by BRICS Alliance While the U.S. dollar is by far the most-used currency in global business and has survived past challenges to its preeminence, members of the alliance and other developing nations say they are fed up with America’s dominance of the global financial system. The dollar represents roughly 58% of the world’s foreign exchange reserves, according to the IMF and major commodities like oil are still primarily bought and sold using dollars. The dollar’s dominance is threatened, however, with BRICS’ growing share of GDP and the alliance’s intent to trade in non-dollar currencies — a process known as de-dollarization. Trump, in a Truth Social post, said: “We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy.” Related Story: Putin Accuses US of ‘Weaponizing’ the Dollar At a summit of BRIC nations in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. of “weaponizing” the dollar and described it as a “big mistake.” “It’s not us who refuse to use the dollar,” Putin said at the time. “But if they don’t let us work, what can we do? We are forced to search for alternatives.” Russia has specifically pushed for the creation of a new payment system that would offer an alternative to the global bank messaging network, SWIFT, and allow Moscow to dodge Western sanctions and trade with partners. Trump said there is “no chance” BRIC will replace the U.S. dollar in global trade and any country that tries to make that happen “should wave goodbye to America.” Related Story: US Dollar’s Role as Global Reserve Currency Secure Research shows that the U.S. dollar’s role as the primary global reserve currency is not threatened in the near future. An Atlantic Council model that assesses the dollar’s place as the primary global reserve currency states the dollar is “secure in the near and medium term” and continues to dominate other currencies. Trump’s latest tariff threat comes after he threatened to slap 25% tariffs on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tax on goods from China, as a way to force the countries to do more to halt the flow of illegal immigration and drugs into the U.S. He has since held a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who said Thursday she is confident that a tariff war with the United States can be averted. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returned home Saturday after meeting Trump, without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on Canada.

Nagpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Maharashtra's new chief minister on December 5 at Azad Maidan, Mumbai, as confirmed by BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Governor CP Radhakrishnan will administer the oath, marking the culmination of the BJP-led Mahayuti's historic victory in the assembly elections. Speaking to TOI, Bawankule shared, "Further updates on the legislative party leader will follow soon. Stay tuned for developments, which I will post on ‘X'." Sources suggest the BJP legislature party meeting on December 3 will finalise the next CM, with Devendra Fadnavis likely to bag the top post. While Fadnavis remains the clear frontrunner, BJP insiders highlighted the procedural necessity of legislative endorsement before official confirmation. "Despite nods from PM Modi, home minister Amit Shah, and RSS, the party maintains its rule of MLAs electing the legislative party leader to uphold democratic principles," they said. Other names, like Union minister Murlidhar Mohol, briefly surfaced in political circles but were dismissed as baseless. "BJP's tradition of deliberating through elected representatives holds firm," a source added. The forthcoming swearing-in will not just install a new CM, but is expected to introduce a refreshed cabinet. Sources indicated that around 10 BJP ministers and five to seven from Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP will also take oath. BJP plans to prioritise younger faces under 60 years of age, while senior leaders may transition to advisory roles. The December 5 ceremony promises to be a grand political event, showcasing BJP's dominance after its alliance secured 235 of 288 assembly seats. Thousands of party workers and key leaders from all 36 districts will attend, alongside RSS representatives, emphasising unity within the Mahayuti. The event is expected to symbolise not only BJP's political muscle, but also its focus on inclusive leadership, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Maharashtra's governance. The BJP-led Mahayuti coalition's historic victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections paved the way for this announcement. The alliance secured a commanding 235 seats out of 288, with BJP emerging as the largest party with 132 seats. With Fadnavis widely considered the frontrunner, the event is expected to symbolise BJP's dominant position in the coalition while showcasing unity among partners.President-elect Donald Trump on Friday asked Scott Bessent, a top fundraiser to his campaign, to serve as secretary of the Treasury Department, two sources familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News. If confirmed, Bessent will helm the fiscal policies for an economy that weathered high inflation in recent years, an issue that remained top of mind for many voters who helped send Trump back to the White House in the election earlier this month. Trump’s pick will be tasked with implementing any tax cuts that a Republican-controlled Congress may pursue. And with Trump proposing aggressive tariffs on imports from countries spanning the globe, the new Treasury Department chief will have to manage relationships with global finance ministers who may choose to retaliate with tariffs of their own. The Cabinet-level job is to steer federal fiscal policies set by Congress and the White House. The secretary is also the executive branch’s top go-between with the Federal Reserve, a traditionally autonomous institution that sets monetary policies, such as determining interest rates and steering economic conditions at a broader level. That could be a delicate task in the incoming Trump administration, which is likely to put unprecedented political pressure on the central bank. During his time in and out of office, Trump has blasted Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, whom he nominated in 2017. In an October interview with Bloomberg News, Trump said the president should not be allowed to order interest rate decisions but should be able to “put in comments as to whether the interest rates should go up or down.” Powell has said he would not yield the position if Trump asked him to resign, meaning he could in theory remain chairman until his term expires in May 2026. With a dramatic improvement on inflation compared to two years ago, the Powell-led Fed has cut interest rates in its last two meetings as part of a bid to stop high borrowing costs from unduly raising unemployment. In Trump’s first term, he tapped banker Steven Mnuchin as the nation’s chief financial officer. Mnuchin, who also dabbled in Hollywood as a financier and producer, fumbled over some ethics rules at the beginning of his term, landing himself briefly in hot water for plugging a Lego Batman that he executive produced. But his tenure at the Treasury Department was more stable than those of other high-level cabinet posts in Trump’s first term . Mnuchin remained in the role for all four years, helping steer the economy through the onset of the pandemic by helping to push the $2 trillion CARES Act toward bipartisan passage in March 2020. The stimulus package, which most memorably included checks sent directly to households, was hailed by economists as a bridge that helped carry the U.S. over the worst economic turbulence from the pandemic and shutdown orders meant to combat it. After Trump’s re-election, Mnuchin told CNBC he was unlikely to accept a new Cabinet role but would “be happy to serve from the outside.” Since leaving office, Mnuchin launched an investment fund that reportedly sourced its capital from sovereign wealth funds in several Gulf states. Delhi’s next election’s a hot potato, but what really counts will barely be discussed Political twins Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia have staked their political futures on Delhi assembly election 2025 – both out on bail and both back to earnestly campaigning on their 2013 ‘honest neta’ plank. In the aftermath of money laundering allegations that played out through the year, both proclaimed when they quit, separately, that they’d return to office only if voters gave them a clean chit. It was hitting two birds with one stone: making the election a trial by voter, and reiterating the alleged unfairness of law enforcement. Jail stint clearly served another CM, Hemant Soren, well in Jharkhand, who went on to win handsomely on a tribal identity plank. Unlike Soren, Kejriwal had refused to resign when arrested, opting to play a king-in-exile card. AAP’s constant Hindu-hum continued when Atishi, a rare first-time legislator to assume the post, had posed next to an empty chair to symbolise Kejriwal as the ‘real’ Ram. Another CM, Omar Abdullah in newest UT J&K, just days ago, said “dual power system should end”, while his party talked of certain issues as “job of an elected govt, not a nominated person”. Kejriwal knows this tune well – he’s had dealings, to put it mildly, with three LGs. Powers of Delhi’s elected govt stand considerably whittled. AAP govt’s been on a collision course with its bureaucracy. It bickers with its allies. Having won 62 of 70 seats in 2020, this time’s poll strategy hangs entirely on Kejriwal’s political acumen – his netagiri sharper than his anti-corruption crusader role. In a smart move, Sisodia, who won by just a little over 3,000 votes in 2020, has been shifted, his traditional middle-class east Delhi seat clearly not safe anymore. AAP became a national party last Sep after winning 5 seats in Gujarat state polls – alongside govts in Delhi and Punjab, where it made electoral capital from farmers’ protests, and 2 MLAs in Goa. In home turf Delhi, it’s AAP’s toughest battle yet. Delhi’s 2020 election was held at the height of anti-CAA protests – with its epicentre the women’s resistance at Shaheen Bagh, even as Covid crept up rapidly while the Centre prepared for Trump’s visit, followed by communal clashes in Delhi. Yesterday, the former CM worried over law and order in Delhi. Kejriwal’s spoilt for political issues to campaign on – sadly, none of it will likely be about the decay of India’s richest city, its toxic air, or mismanaged waste, appalling urban transport system, its traffic woes or the desperation of its lower middle classes, where mid-day meal cooks are paid 1,000 a month.
