In a telephone interview on Wednesday, Director Mary Anne Molina of the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) said the onslaught of Pepito in Catanduanes would disrupt the local economy and severely impact the supply of abaca fiber in both domestic and international markets. “Catanduanes, the capital of abaca production and a major supplier of abaca fiber—a key material used in various products such as ropes, textiles, and specialty paper—will definitely suffer. Farmers will need to wait for two to three years for the abaca plantations to recover,” Molina said. Catanduanes supplies 27 percent of the country’s total fiber production and contributes 81 percent to the entire Bicol region’s output,” Molina added. “We have bulk stocks, but for sure, they will not sustain the demand of the market,” she said. She warned farmers that the recovery process would be slow, as abaca plants take 24 months or more to regenerate. She said farmers whose plantations sustained slight damage would receive P5,000 in assistance, while those with moderate to severe damage would get P6,000 to P10,000. Despite the devastation, Molina said farmers could still earn from toppled abaca plants by stripping them and converting them into fiber. “The best way to save the plants is to cut the damaged parts so they can sprout and have a chance to survive,” she said, noting that prices are expected to increase due to the limited supply and high demand. Businesswoman Medi Villanueva, executive vice president of Shelmed Cottage Treasures, said the destruction of plantations would not only affect production but would also displace farmers and their families who lost their sources of livelihood and their houses. “What we need to address first is providing them with construction supplies so they can fix their homes and workplaces,” Villanueva told Inquirer in a separate telephone interview. Retiring Sen. Joe Manchin Monday trashed the Democratic Party as “toxic” in an interview timed to his departure from Washington D.C. The moderate lawmaker, who won two terms as senator in deep-red West Virginian, told CNN’s Manu Raju that the national party has moved too far from its working-class roots . “The (Democratic) brand has been so maligned from the standpoint of – it’s just, it’s toxic,” Manchin said. He explaining his decision to register as an independent earlier this year, saying he could not stick with his lifelong party “in the form of what Democratic party has turned itself into.” Manchin, 77, a wealthy coal baron with a populist streak, sipped a beer during the interview as he slammed his former party colleagues for taking political correctness way too far . “They have basically expanded upon thinking: ‘Well .... we’re going to tell you how you should live your life,’” Manchin said. He said Democrats should focus on keeping the economy humming and prices lower instead of pushing causes like LGBTQ rights. Manchin was one of the last outspoken moderate Democrats to serve in Congress. WHAT WE FOUND The image circulating as an official NYPD mugshot of Luigi Mangione is fake and was likely created using artificial intelligence (AI). VERIFY reviewed the NYPD’s social media accounts and website and found no evidence the image was ever posted on official channels. While the NYPD has posted recent images of Mangione, such as his arrival in New York , they have not released any official booking or arrest photos. “The NYPD does not disseminate arrest photos unless we are attempting to locate an individual,” the department said in an email to VERIFY. It is unclear if Mangione even had a booking photo taken upon his arrival in New York. A 2019 New York state law prohibits the release of arrest or booking photos unless their disclosure serves as a specific law enforcement purpose. If an NYPD booking photo of Mangione exists, it likely would not have been made public. The only official booking photos of Mangione released so far were by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections on Dec. 9 and Dec. 10 . Maria Bivens, the spokesperson with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, confirmed to VERIFY that the viral image was not distributed by their department. Using RevEye, a reverse image search tool, VERIFY found the viral image has never been published by credible news outlets as an official booking photo. It was also not published by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office , which is prosecuting the case, or the Department of Justice , which brought the federal charges. There are clues that suggest the image was generated with AI.
