2 REITs Investors Should Own In 2025Gretchen McKay | (TNS) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PITTSBURGH — Many Americans consider social media a scourge, but for a home cook, it can be a fun and informative place to get help deciding what to eat. Sure, some of the recipes would-be influencers recommend are in fact pretty abominable — check out @chefreactions on TikTok, Instagram or X for many, many examples — but I have stumbled across some pretty good recipes on many occasions, too. There are probably as many recipes for Marry Me chicken on social media as there are cooks. (Delish claims to have created the video recipe for the original dish, also known as Tuscan chicken, in 2016.) But in my opinion, the best variations hang their chef’s hat on a sauce made with sun-dried tomatoes, garlic and cream. Yum! This rich and luxurious entree is a definite step above the “engagement” chicken that caused a similar stir when it made its debut in Glamour magazine in 2004. That proposal-worthy recipe — saved for posterity in the 2011 cookbook “100 Recipes Every Woman Should Know: Engagement Chicken and 99 Other Fabulous Dishes to Get You Everything You Want in Life” — featured a whole chicken roasted with lemon and herbs. Awesome for sure, but not nearly as swoon worthy. I’ve been married for a very long time, so I’m not looking for a dish that will get me engaged. But who wouldn’t want applause when they put dinner on the table? That’s how Delish’s original recipe made it into the latest installment of “Dinner for Four for $25.” Usually when I’m building these economical meals, I do all my shopping in one store. This time, I shopped over the course of a weekend at some of my favorite haunts to see if that made a difference. (And no, I didn’t factor in the cost of gas, but maybe should have!) First stop after downing my Saturday morning latte and Nutella mele at a street-side table at Colangelo’s in the Strip District: Wholey’s Market, where I found boneless chicken breast at the bargain price of $3.89 per pound. I then crossed the street and headed down the block to Pennsylvania Macaroni Co., where I found several varieties of sun-dried tomatoes to chose from. I went with a jar of Ponti sun-dried cherry tomatoes for $5.09 — a definite splurge when your budget is only $25, but an ingredient I knew would deliver plenty of flavor. At Aldi, I found a bag of five huge lemons for $3.89, or 78 cents apiece, and a nice package of fresh broccoli for $2.28. A bargain, considering I would only use about two-thirds of it. The German supermarket chain known for its low prices and no-frills shopping experience (you have to deposit a quarter to get a shopping cart) also had butter — a main ingredient in my sandwich cookie dessert — on sale for $3.99 a pound. A bag of powdered sugar was pretty cheap, too, at just $2.09 for a two-pound bag. “Shopping” my pantry for ingredients I always have on hand, including garlic, olive oil, spices, rice, molasses and vanilla, once again helped keep costs down. Total bill: $24.38, or 62 cents under budget. Not bad when you consider the homemade dessert recipe makes more oatmeal sandwich cookies than a family can/should eat at one sitting. PG tested Sun-dried tomatoes could be considered a splurge item because even a tiny jar is expensive, but their concentrated, sweet and tangy tomato goodness add so much flavor to a dish! They are certainly the star of this chicken dish that has been making the rounds on social media platforms. Some say the entree is so good, you’ll get a marriage proposal out of it. At any rate, the Parmesan cream sauce that gets spooned on top of the chicken and rice will certainly make your diners swoon. This original recipe from Delish.com is a pretty easy dish to get on the table in quick fashion. Just remember to use a dry pot holder to take the pan out of the oven because it will be very hot; I very stupidly used a damp dish towel and now have another cooking scar. 4 (8-ounce) boneless, skinless chicken breasts Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 3/4 cup chicken broth 1/2 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan Fresh basil, torn, for serving, optional Cooked rice, for serving Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Generously season chicken with salt and black pepper and cook, turning halfway through, until golden brown, about 5 minutes per side. Transfer chicken to a plate. In same skillet over medium heat, heat remaining 2 tablespoons oil. Stir in garlic, thyme and red pepper flakes. Cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in broth, tomatoes, cream, and Parmesan; season with salt. Bring to a simmer, then return chicken and any accumulated juices to skillet. Transfer skillet to oven. Bake chicken until cooked through and juices run clear when chicken is pierced with a knife, 10-12 minutes. Arrange chicken on a platter. Spoon sauce over. Top with basil, if using, and serve with cooked rice. Serves 4. — delish.com PG tested Broccoli is a reliable veggie when you need a little something extra to round out a meal and don’t want to spend a fortune. Here, it’s blanched until crisp-tender and then tossed with lemon juice and zest and a pinch of red pepper flakes. I used lemon olive oil (already on hand) for an extra burst of citrus flavor. 1 large bunch broccoli, separated into florets 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter 1 clove garlic, minced Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon 1 pinch (or two) red pepper flakes Flaky salt and freshly ground ground black pepper, to taste Place broccolini in a large skillet with about 2 inches of water; bring to a boil and cook until bright green, 1-2 minutes. Drain. Heat olive oil in the same skillet over medium heat. Stir in garlic and cook until golden and fragrant, 1-2 minutes. Add broccoli; cook and stir until heated through, 2-3 minutes. Squeeze lemon juice and zest over broccoli and season with red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Serves 4. — Gretchen McKay, Post-Gazette PG tested Remember how if you were lucky when you were a kid you got an individually wrapped Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pie in your lunchbox? These soft and chewy oatmeal cookies sandwiched with vanilla buttercream taste exactly the same. Actually, they’re better because they’re not made with corn syrup and artificial flavorings, but rather real butter and brown sugar. It’s important to let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a rack. Otherwise they will fall apart. The icing is very sweet, so you might want to reduce the amount of powdered sugar. For cookies 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1 tablespoon molasses 1 large egg, room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt For filling 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 3 cups powdered sugar 2 tablespoons heavy cream 2 teaspoons vanilla Pinch of salt Preheat oven to 325 degrees and line two sheet pans with parchment paper. In stand mixer outfitted with whisk attachment add butter, brown sugar and molasses and beat on low speed until combined. Gradually increase speed to medium-high and beat until smooth, about 2 minutes. Scrape down sides and bottom of bowl with spatula, then add egg and vanilla extract. Beat on medium-high speed until combined. Add flour, oats, baking soda and salt and beat on low speed until just combined and no streaks of flour remain. Use a 1/2 -ounce cookie scoop tor tablespoon measure to portion out equal amounts of dough. Roll the dough in your hands to smooth the edges, then place 2 inches apart on prepared pans. Bake until cookies have puffed up and are set and firm around the edges but still somewhat soft in the middle, 9-11 minutes. Remove sheet pans from oven and allow cookies to rest on the pans for 5 minutes, then use a metal spatula to transfer cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely. Once cookies have cooled, make filling. In stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine butter, confectioners’ sugar, cream, vanilla and salt. Beat on low speed, gradually increasing the speed to high, until creamy and fully incorporated, about 45 seconds. If filling is dry, add a small splash or two of cream. Assemble cookies. Using a small offset spatula or butter knife to spread about 2 tablespoons of filling onto the bottom side of one cookie, then place second cookie on top to sandwich. Repeat with remaining cookies and serve. Makes 16 sandwich cookies. —”Sweet Tooth” by Sarah Fennel (Clarkson Potter, $35) ©2024 PG Publishing Co. Visit at post-gazette.com. The inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff tournament was off and running last weekend and boy is there a lot to dive into after the first four games. First, let me say I’m all for a 12-team playoff. In addition to opening up the field to more than a handful of teams each year, it allows for some fun regular season games between top teams that doesn’t necessarily spell the end of national title hopes for the losers. However, the setup for seeding (not rankings) and what the most important criteria should be is being called into question after four first-round blowouts. Now, we have had PLENTY of blowouts in the old system(s) so we shouldn’t be all that surprised that for the most part the outcomes were known early on last weekend. It’s always going to be a possibility, especially in the first-round games. People are also reading... Corvallis high schoolers: We don't trust district to handle bias reports Albany man indicted in attempted murder case Oregon State celebrates Murphy's arrival while Washington State loses coach, quarterback What’s proven, at least to me, to be the most egregious error in the process of setting up the bracket is that four of the five automatic bids that go to the conference champs must be in the top four seeds, and thus receive a first-round bye. There is NO WAY Boise State and Arizona State should be seeded above Texas, Penn State or even Ohio State and Notre Dame. The proof is in the selection committee's final rankings of those teams — Boise State was No. 9 and Arizona State No. 12. But with Clemson “stealing” the ACC’s auto bid by edging SMU on a last-second field goal after blowing a big early lead, the Sun Devils, winners of the Big 12, moved up to the No. 4 seed with Clemson the No. 12 seed after being ranked No. 16. ASU was No. 12 in the final CFP rankings. So No. 9 and No. 12 got byes. Allowing teams to leapfrog others simply because they were conference champs makes no sense. All conferences are not equal, as was proven by the ACC and Big 12 with their champs being ranked No. 12 and No. 16. That’s like saying the champs of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC should all be No. 1 seeds in the NCAA basketball tournaments. Can you imagine a No. 5 seed winning the conference tournament and being a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tourney? It also severely impacts the paths of teams to make it to the title game. Just ask Oregon. The Ducks, as the only undefeated team, received the No. 1 seed. Because of the auto bids getting byes, Oregon will now face No. 8 Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes, who lost at Oregon by a single point and before a regular-season ending loss to Michigan was probably looked at as just as likely to win the title as Oregon, would have been the No. 6 seed. Instead, two of the favorites to win the title are playing in the quarters. Make it make sense. Had we gone by the rankings themselves, we would have had first-round matchups that pitted No. 12 Clemson at No. 5 Notre Dame; No. 11 Arizona State at No. 6 Ohio State; No. 10 SMU at No. 7 Tennessee; and No. 9 Boise State at No. 8 Indiana. Yes, Tennessee and Indiana would have had home games instead of going on the road where they really were not competitive. Texas at No. 3 and Penn State at No. 4 would have received the byes. If all the home teams would have won, we would be waiting to see Oregon vs. Indiana, Georgia vs. Tennessee, Texas vs. Ohio State and Penn State vs. Notre Dame. Those, to me, are more compelling games and probably more evenly matched across the board. Had that been the case, Indiana’s coach wouldn’t have complained so much about whatever case he thought he was making. That leads me to my next disappointment: Did Indiana really belong in the top 12 anyway. Or SMU for that matter. Oh no, here comes some SEC bias. Well, yeah, maybe a little. Are you going to tell me either of those teams are clearly better than say Alabama (No. 11), Ole Miss (No. 14) or South Carolina (15)? Or even No. 13 Miami for that matter. As I have said, not all conferences are equal — nor are conference schedules. Is it surprising Indiana went 11-1 when the Hoosiers played seven of the bottom 10 teams in the 18-team conference? Their best win was against 7-5 Michigan and their only game against a better opponent was a 38-15 loss at Ohio State. Oh and wins over Florida International (4-8), Western Illinois (4-8) and Charlotte (5-7) don’t help their cause. Not including Ohio State (11-2), the combined record of the Hoosiers' opponents was (51-81). Add in the Buckeyes and that makes the opponents 62-83. As for SMU, the overall record in the regular season of their opponents was 76-72. That includes the loss to 10-2 BYU. So wins came against teams 66-72. The best wins were against Duke and Louisville, who tied for fourth with two other teams at 5-3 in ACC play. While winning should be an important factor, should we also put stock in strength of schedule, impressive wins and/or bad losses. While I have seen varying strength of schedule calculations, it would appear that both Alabama and Ole Miss had a better SOS than Indiana and SMU and it wasn’t close. Alabama and Ole Miss both defeated No. 2 Georgia. Indiana and SMU beat nobody in the final CFP top 25. Of course, Alabama lost on the road to Vanderbilt (the week after the Georgia win) and to Oklahoma (which appears to have sealed the Crimson Tide’s fate with a third loss.) Ole Miss lost at home to Kentucky, then fell at LSU and at Florida. Those three losses were by a combined 13 points. In addition to drubbing Georgia at home, Ole Miss beat South Carolina (27-3) on the road. Maybe Lane Kiffin's Rebels are the team that has the best argument to have been in the field. While South Carolina and Miami had good seasons, neither had a signature win other than the Gamecocks edging Clemson in the last game of the season. Now, would Alabama or Ole Miss have fared better than Indiana and SMU in the openers? Maybe, maybe not. Were both Indiana and SMU getting in the tournament “feel good” stories? Sure. But did they deserve it as two of the top seven at-large teams? Again, it goes back to what the mission of the CFP is and that is to get the five auto qualifiers in and the next seven best at-large teams. Look, the NCAA men’s tournament is so fun because there are so many upsets and Cinderella is usually alive and well into the Sweet 16 and beyond. It’s like we have that this year with Arizona State and Boise State making the quarters. But they didn’t have to win in the postseason to do it. They were simply awarded the spot because of the agreed upon format. That needs to change. Related story: Commentary: Is it now or never for Ducks to win first national title? Now that the dust has settled on one of the craziest regular seasons in recent history, the Ducks stand above the rest heading into the CFP. Steve Gress is the deputy editor for Mid-Valley Media. Pep Guardiola laments worst moment at Manchester City after home hammering by Tottenham
White House national security spokesman John Kirby addressed the sightings of ‘drones’ over New Jersey's skies, denying that any evidence suggests a foreign adversary is responsible. White House national security communications adviser John Kirby claimed Thursday that many of the purported drone sightings spotted over New Jersey for the past several weeks are actually lawfully operated manned aircraft. "We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat, or have a foreign nexus," Kirby told reporters at the daily White House press briefing. "The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI are investigating these sightings, and they're working closely with state and local law enforcement to provide resources using numerous detection methods to better understand their origin." "Using very sophisticated electronic detection technologies provided by federal authorities, we have not been able to, and neither have state or local law enforcement authorities, corroborate any of the reported visual sightings," he said. "To the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft that are being operated lawfully. The United States Coast Guard is providing support to the state of New Jersey, and has confirmed that there is no evidence of any foreign-based involvement from coastal vessels. And importantly, there are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted airspace." In a statement to Fox News Digital, Brian Harrell, a former DHS assistant secretary for infrastructure protection under the Trump administration, said Kirby missed a key opportunity to develop trust with the public. NEW JERSEY DRONES: HOUSE SPEAKER JOHNSON SAYS HE'S GETTING A CLASSIFIED BRIEFING TODAY White House national security communications adviser John Kirby speaks during the daily briefing at the White House in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. (Jim Watson/AFP via Getty Images) "The government has a unique opportunity to build trust with the American public here, and they are fumbling the ball," Harrell said. "Yes, additional authorities are needed; however, we have the tools and radar capabilities today to understand the details of these drones. While I don’t think foreign nations are involved, it’s clear to me that the government or contractors are testing capabilities." A joint Homeland Security and FBI statement said federal authorities were working with the New Jersey State Police and would continue to "investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings." "Historically, we have experienced cases of mistaken identity, where reported drones are, in fact, manned aircraft or facilities. We are supporting local law enforcement in New Jersey with numerous detection methods but have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection," the statement said. "To the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft, operating lawfully. There are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted air space." Both agencies said threats posed by unmanned aircraft systems are taken seriously. "To be clear, they have uncovered no such malicious activity or intent at this stage," they said. "While there is no known malicious activity occurring in New Jersey, the reported sightings there do, however, highlight the insufficiency of current authorities." Kirby appeared to pass the buck to Congress, calling on lawmakers to "expand existing counterdrone authorities," recognizing the potential threat of unmanned aircraft. "We certainly take seriously the threat that can be posed by unmanned aircraft systems, which is why law enforcement and other agencies continue to support New Jersey and investigate the reports, even though they have uncovered no malicious activity or intent at this particular stage," Kirby said Thursday. "While there is no known malicious activity occurring, the reported sightings there do, however, highlight a gap in authorities, and so we urge Congress to pass important legislation that will extend and expand existing counter drone authorities so that we are better prepared to identify and mitigate any potential threats to airports or other critical infrastructure. And so that state and local authorities are provided all the tools that they need to respond to such threats as well." In this image taken from video provided by MartyA45_, several drones appear to be flying over Randolph, New Jersey, on Dec. 4. (MartyA45_ /TMX via AP, File) Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., on Thursday decried the lack of information coming out of the White House. "We should be doing some very urgent intelligence analysis and take them out of the skies, especially if they’re flying over airports or military bases," Blumenthal said, according to The Independent. "The Biden administration ought to be acting more aggressively against these drones that have been reported. If only to tell the American people who owns them, who’s flying them, what they are. The lack of information is absolutely unacceptable." NEW JERSEY DRONE SIGHTINGS: MILITARY ANALYSTS BREAK DOWN NATIONAL SECURITY CONCERNS, DOUBT HOBBYISTS AT PLAY Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials have stressed that the reported drones don’t appear to be a threat to public safety, but many state and municipal lawmakers have nonetheless called for stricter rules about who can fly the unmanned aircraft. The FBI is among several agencies investigating, and it has asked residents to share videos, photos and other information they may have about the drones. At first, the drones were spotted flying along the scenic Raritan River, a waterway that feeds the Round Valley Reservoir, the state's largest aquifer, about 50 miles west of New York City. But soon sightings were reported statewide, including near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Trump’s golf course in Bedminster, according to The Associated Press. The aircraft have also recently been spotted in coastal areas. Chris Smith, R-N.J., said a Coast Guard commanding officer told him a dozen drones closely followed a Coast Guard lifeboat near Barnegat Light and Island Beach State Park in Ocean County over the weekend. During a congressional hearing on the matter, FBI Assistant Director Robert Wheeler testified that the bureau does not know who is responsible for the drones spotted over New Jersey in recent weeks, the Asbury Park Press reported. Smitth said he was told by officials at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst that they don't have permission from the Department of Defense to shoot down the unknown aircraft trailing their boats and retrieve them for analysis. TUCKED away in the middle of Yemen lies an ancient desert city with a unique style of architecture that dates back to the 16th century. Dubbed the "Manhattan of the Dessert", the sprawling towers in this city are rather made up of a unique material - mud bricks. Almost all the buildings of Shibam are built with mud bricks using a technique that is said to have been invented centuries ago. This architectural style was used to protect residents from Bedouin attacks. A mixture of soil, hay, and water was turned into bricks and left to bake in the sun for days before being used to make these buildings. Some 500 of these are tower blocks, which rise five to 11 stories high read more world news The windowless, ground floors were used for livestock and grain storage, while the uppermost levels typically served as communal floors for socializing. The walls for these stunning mud towers are a whopping six feet thick at the bottom, with some of the top floors having much thinner walls. While the tradition of brick buildings dates back to the 8th or 9th century, it’s difficult to know when they were first built because of how often they’re touched up. That is because the exterior facade which is often eroded by wind and rain, so they have to be periodically covered with mud. Most read in The Sun Each floor traditionally has one or two rooms, and each building ranges between two to eleven storeys high. Despite being centuries old, these are still used by locals to live and socialise. But during the last few years, Shibam has been threatened by natural disasters as well as by the war and the terrorism suffered by Yemen. In 2008, a flood caused severe damage to the buildings. Afterwards, a restoration program was started. Furthermore, the city has been declared a world heritage in danger by UNESCO because of the war in Yemen. Meanwhile, tucked away in a corner of Turkey lies an abandoned village whose residents were forced to leave after ghost sightings . The town of Kayaköy was once a lively and integrated community of Greek–Turkish people but was left to rot by locals some 100 years ago. It has now become a true ghost town that sits empty except for tour groups visiting the historical place that failed to stand the test of time. Most of the houses in the city have now lost their roofs and their collapsed walls sprout with vegetation. The ruins of houses, churches and other buildings can be found in the city, which was once home to thousands of people before they left the town. The eerie streets have been left behind, with people able to wander from building to building and have a glimpse at the lives of those who used to live there. Meanwhile, haunting pictures inside an abandoned ghost town show a once-booming area frozen in time. Nestled in the hills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Bodie was established in 1859 as a modest camp after gold was discovered in the region - but the old town now hides a dark curse . The town in California rose to prominence in 1876 after gold ore attracted settlers, and by 1879 the town had a booming population between 5,000 and 7,000. In its heyday, the town boasted some 70 saloons, a bowling alley, dance halls, gambling halls, and numerous stores, hotels, and churches. This time period was characterised by rowdiness, gambling, opium use, and regular, often deadly, bar fights. But by the 1880s promising booms in Arizona, Montana, and Utah had lured miners away, and the town began to decline. A small mining community survived, but by the early 20th century most of its mines had closed, and the population had fallen to a few hundred people. The area was designated a state park in 1962 and welcomes around 200,000 visitors a year. Read More on The US Sun Legend has it that the Bodie Curse will haunt anyone who removes any of the old artefacts from the town. Park rangers have even received letters and packages from past visitors hoping to lift the curse by returning what they’ve stolen.
Trump Brings Back Government By Social MediaMIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said he was caught off guard by reports early Tuesday that linebacker Shaq Barrett wants to unretire. The two-time Super Bowl winner signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in March, then abruptly announced his retirement on social media in July, just days before the start of Miami's training camp. “Just to be candid, obviously there's a reason why you target and sign somebody," McDaniel said Tuesday afternoon. “I was fully caught off guard, or caught by surprise this morning as I found out.” McDaniel indicated the Dolphins have not had any conversations with Barrett recently. Miami holds the 32-year-old’s contractual rights. ESPN first reported the news. “It was kind of news as you guys got it,” McDaniel said. He also said he hasn't had a chance to think about Barrett potentially rejoining the team, and that his immediate focus is on Miami's Thursday night game at Green Bay. “The team is counting on me to think about the Packers,” he said. "I'll get with (GM) Chris (Grier), and we'll work through that. There's a ton of implications that go along with it in terms of team and roster stuff, so we'll work through that as we just got the news today.” Barrett has 400 tackles, 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles and three interceptions in nine seasons — four with Denver and five with Tampa Bay. He was a second-team All-Pro with the Buccaneers in 2019, with a league-high 19 1/2 sacks. The Dolphins waived veteran safety Marcus Maye on Tuesday and activated rookie safety Patrick McMorris from injured reserve. Maye, who signed with the Dolphins in June, played in 11 games with three starts for Miami this season. He had 30 tackles and a tackle for loss. He could re-sign to the team's practice squad if he clears waivers. Maye previously played for New Orleans, but was cut in a money-saving move in March after two seasons with the Saints. Maye's release made room on the roster for McMorris, who was drafted in the sixth round by Miami in April. He began the season on injured reserve because of a calf injury.
