UK, Italy, Japan to develop next-generation fighter jetThe Amherst VFW Post 1662 and Auxiliary, 165 Cleveland Ave., hosted the annual Children’s Christmas Party on Dec. 14 for members and their families. Along with gifts, about 90 children and 50 adults received a meal accompanied with desserts provided by Amy’s Angels, according to Auxiliary secretary Tricia Pisegna. Children had the opportunity to create their own Christmas tree craft, Pisegna said. Amy’s Angels also provided small stockings filled with candy in addition to the gifts Santa brought for the children and grandchildren of the veterans. “We go out and get the kids each a gift,” Breeding said. “We try to make it fair for the kids.” Said Pisegna: “We have people that are longtime members, they’ve been doing it for 13 years.” Auxiliary members also are volunteers for Operation Hope, which collaborates with Dollar Tree from October to December, she said. The campaign centers around asking customers at Dollar Tree checkouts if they would like to purchase a toy for a veteran’s family member. Auxiliary members collect all toys. “They absolutely love all of the presents that are there,” Breeding said. “I think they’re like overwhelmed.” “When the child comes, not only are they getting the gift that Santa gives them and their little candy stocking, but they’re getting a toy that was purchased by someone in the community,” Pisegnam said. The mission of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is designed so that when veterans are done serving their country, they can serve their community, which is the charge at Post 1662. Families unaffiliated with a VFW member but are in need can be invited to the Christmas party, Pisegna said. “They might not have a veteran, but we know they have a need, so they come to our party and we have a gift for them,” she said. “I believe we’re truly a family, and we generally care about each other and our well-being.” Families come to a safe, warm place and loving place that everyone embraces, Pisegna said.
