Ms Pelosi's office said she would be unable to attend the remainder of events on her trip and "looks forward to returning home to the US soon" but added that "she continues to work". Republican congressman Michael McCaul, who was also on the trip, posted on social media that he was "praying for a speedy recovery", adding: "I am confident she will be back on her feet in no time." Earlier this week, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 82, tripped and fell in the Senate, spraining his wrist and cutting his face. He is stepping down from his leadership post at the end of the year. Noah Waterman's driving, twisting shot in the lane with 1.2 seconds left rescued Louisville from a home upset bid by Eastern Kentucky, escaping with a 78-76 home victory on Saturday. The Cardinals (8-5) equaled their win total from the 2023-24 campaign. Louisville claimed a 71-61 edge on a James Scott dunk with 6:17 remaining, but Eastern Kentucky (6-7) followed with a 12-1 run to claim the lead on Devontae Blanton's layup with 2:20 to play. The teams traded baskets until Waterman's shot in the final seconds provided the difference. Terrance Edwards Jr. made one of two free throws to pad the Cardinals' margin with 0.4 seconds to play. Louisville grabbed a season-high 21 offensive rebounds in the win. The Cardinals were led by Edwards' 20-point performance on 6-for-12 shooting. J'Vonne Hadley dropped in 15 points and added 10 rebounds, four on the offensive end. Chucky Hepburn added 14 points despite six turnovers and guard Reyne Smith had 12 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Waterman contributed 12 points, none more significant than the game winner. Eastern Kentucky's George Kimble III keyed the Colonels' rally with 24 points, with 17 coming in the second half. Blanton scored 22 points on 10-for-23 shooting. The Nittany Lions (10-2) have enjoyed a strong season to this point, highlighted by a win over then-No. 8 Purdue earlier this month. Most recently, the team topped Drexel 75-64 last weekend as Yanic Konan Niederhauser scored 18 points and Ace Baldwin Jr. chipped in 15 points and six assists. Penn State outrebounded Drexel 40-31 and grabbed 19 offensive boards, including six by Puff Johnson and three by Konan Niederhauser. "Offensive rebounds are extra possessions," Nittany Lions coach Mike Rhoades said. "That gets us to where we want to go to. Number of possessions, it's a better chance to win all the time." Konan Niederhauser has shot at least 50 percent from the floor in every game except one this season and enters Sunday's clash averaging 13.0 points, which is second-best on the squad. Baldwin comes in with 14.2 points to go along with 8.5 assists, which ranks among the top marks in the nation. That duo, in addition to Penn State's bevy of 3-point shooters, should give Penn plenty to handle defensively. Toronto Blue Jays officially sign reliever Garcia to two-year, US$15M dealA recent social media post delivered an important message. It came from a familiar voice — Pete Buttigieg, a native Hoosier, former South Bend mayor and current U.S. Secretary of Transportation. “There’s a crisis on our roadways,” Buttigieg writes. “We lose as many people to vehicle crashes as we do to gun violence in this country — about 40,000 people a year.” Traffic crashes are not new. They are an ever-present fact of life and a constant danger when traveling the roadways. The risks are especially acute during times of year when roads and highways are jammed with holiday travelers. Now is one of those times. AAA, the travel safety advocacy organization, projects 71.9 million people will travel by car during the Thanksgiving holiday period, a significant increase over last year’s travel numbers and higher than pre-pandemic levels of 2019. In many cases, motorists will be operating outside their normal driving routines, and they will encounter heavier traffic and more hazards than they normally would. These situations are often recipes for roadway conflicts and, yes, disaster. When the worst happens, lives are lost and/or changed forever. It’s not something we like to think about, but it’s wise if we do. At least in a constructive way. As Buttigieg said in his social media message, “Let us remember the lives of those we’ve lost on our roadways and recommit to keeping our roads safe. We all have a role to play.” Indeed, we do. Whether you’re traveling two-lane roads across the Hoosier state or Midwest to visit relatives or friends, interstate highways for longer journeys, or simply heading out to take advantage of Black Friday shopping opportunities, it’s essential to remain vigilant when traveling. The formula for staying safe and decreasing your risks for involvement in a traffic crash is simple but highly effective. Public and private sector safety agencies agree on its components. Avoid distractions while driving. Keep hands and eyes off cell phones. Those devices can be among the most dangerous items in a vehicle if you’re behind the wheel. Actions such as eating or grooming can be equally as dangerous. Be aware of surroundings outside the vehicle as well. Pay attention to what other cars are doing and keep a safe distance from them. During this time of year, deer can pose a particular hazard. Obey traffic rules. Never drink and drive. Alcohol and automobiles are a deadly mix. Fatigue can also pose major risks for drivers. And, of course, always wear a seatbelt. Yes, this advice is laced with common sense. But it doesn’t help if you don’t use it. Safety is never guaranteed. You can, however, do much to protect yourself and those around you. Be responsible. Be careful. Stay safe.
