url www haha777 news HOURS after gunmen brazenly killed, Jahiem Papius of Babonneau, and critically injured another man, near Derek Walcott Square in Castries, a group of 36 young men (mentees) assembled in the conference room of the National Skills Development Centre (NSDC), for an interactive session with their mentors. The mood at this event, which was organized by the Our Boys Matter (OBM) programme of the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund, (SSDF) and which coincided with International Men’s Day, contrasted sharply with the recalled deadly shooting incident. The latter brought despair, while the former engendered hope. There will be times when we will not have effective solutions for our problems. Frustratingly, there are times when obvious solutions are before us, yet we ignore them. One hopes the OBM does not suffer this fate. The OBM has its raison d’etre in several, linked, and familiar challenges that afflict boys, such as poverty, hunger, living in dilapidated homes and unseemly neighbourhoods, fatherlessness, high rates of juvenile delinquency, and the growing presence and attraction of gangs. It’s also thought that declining levels of educational achievement, a lack of employable skills and unpreparedness of young men for work, are primarily because students are being forced to take on academic subjects that do not interest them; and are not in areas they are passionate about. Since it was established seven years ago, the OBM has helped to boost the employability of participants. It has given them a desire to set achievable goals for themselves. This, in turn, has helped to motivate participants and given them a sense of achievement. Additionally, the OBM has helped to keep young boys who are contemplating dropping out of school, to remain in school and away from criminality. OBM participants receive housing, educational assistance, and psycho-social support. Those who are prone to, or who manifest deviant behaviour are exposed to the Adolescent Development Programme (ADP) pioneered by the Centre for Adolescent Rehabilitation and Education (CARE). It’s puzzling to note that despite its obvious success, the ADP model has not been fully incorporated within the education system. An attractive feature of the OBM is the pairing of participants with male mentors who can help them to safely navigate the isthmus that connects adolescence and adulthood. Unfortunately, though not surprisingly, few male mentors have come forward, perhaps because the call for mentors has not gone out far and wide enough. The OBM will have to fix this. Admittedly, mentorship is not for everyone. It’s like a vocation. Being a good mentor is about much more than giving good advice. Good mentors have loads of patience and empathy, are excellent listeners, and are willing to serve as sounding boards for mentees. Good mentors don’t know it all, but know enough and are willing to learn, including from mentees. Moreover, good mentors are emotionally intelligent, have positive mindsets and are not judgmental. They always seek the facts on an issue. Finally, good mentors must have good contacts and be able to find resources, often at short notice. Reflecting on these qualities, it’s easy to see that a good mentor is like a good parent, who gives tough love to his/her children, who show concern for them and who are committed to helping them achieve their full potential and become role models to others. Mentors are only as good as mentees allow them to be. The relationship between a mentor and mentee thrives on trust, mutual respect and a shared commitment to learning. Mentees and mentors can learn a great deal from each other. The most productive mentor-mentee relationships are those in which both parties are equally invested in success. My parents were the best mentors I could have had. They complemented each other perfectly. My Dad was highly disciplined, so much so that in 27 years of public service, he was never late for work or missed a day’s work. He was brutally frank and deeply honest. For him, a spade was...a spade. He worked hard at several jobs to feed, clothe, and educate us, and to pay the house rent and utility bills. Critically, he taught us how to approach life by his powerful example. But despite his admirable qualities, Daddy was sometimes impatient and high strung, except at Christmas. While Mamma was softer than Daddy, at times she could be much tougher than him. Whenever she didn’t want my brothers and me to leave the house, while she was away, she would simply collect all our pants, put them in her bag and take them with her. It wasn’t that her bag was large. It was because we had few pants. She would leave us naked from our navels to our feet, to discourage us from going outside to play and getting into trouble. Although my parents had 8 of us, often on arriving home from school we would find a distressed boy or girl whom Mamma had taken in. One young girl stayed with us until she reached adulthood. As fortunate as we were to have excellent parents, there were times when “the village” would take over and provide the guidance and counseling we needed. Parenting can be challenging, especially for young parents. Being human, parents will occasionally make mistakes. I count among these mistakes the belief that “sparing the rod spoils the child.” If a parent must often beat a child, this is a sign that parent needs professional help for himself/herself and/or for the child. Unfortunately, unlike in the past, there are fewer channels through which challenged parents can get support. The OBM deserves to succeed and be replicated across the island. The Ministry of Social Equity and the SSDF might consider creating a CARE-type entity, to advance the programme and to effectively manage it. Hopefully, the OBM will receive enhanced support from the Government and the private sector. Masseys, and the Saint Lucia Electricity Company Limited, (LUCELEC), must be commended for embracing the programme as part of their corporate responsibility efforts.UP Minister Nand Gopal Nandi's Convoy Meets With Accident in Sant Kabir Nagar, 3 Injured

A rchaeological evidence shows that the relationship between dogs and humans is one that transcends centuries, cultures, and civilisations. For instance, an investigation carried out by prehistorian Michel-Alain Garcia on the paw prints of a large canid revealed that they were from a domesticated dog accompanying a child into the Chauvet cave, a famous Palaeolithic structure in southern France. This landmark find offers proof that dogs travelled alongside our ancestors during their nomadic days. Cut to the present day, and we see that nothing much has changed with regard to the human-canine bond. But due to the pressures and demands of modern-day work schedules, many are not only compelled to embrace a sedentary lifestyle, resulting in issues related to limited mobility but also face severe time constraints that hinder them from fulfilling their personal interests. Inevitably, this challenging situation also affects those with dogs at home. Many people, as a result, find it difficult to take their dogs out for regular walks, and may prefer walking them occasionally. As dog parents, however, we must prioritise walking them regularly. Staying indoors all day paves the way for obesity and boredom among canines. Dogs are quite active by nature, especially in their puppy years. However, factors such as inactivity and a steady decline in their metabolism rate as they age makes them prone to obesity. Also, when other factors such as overfeeding are at play, obesity can appear earlier, even at a young age. Fortunately, however, regular walk sessions can help prevent obesity among dogs, and at the same time, alleviate boredom among them by fostering their natural curiosity and enhancing their social confidence. Furthermore, it is no secret that dog walks not only benefit our pets, they benefit us too. From giving us the opportunity to spend quality time with our canine buddies to exploring the outside greenery, dog walks prove their worth as an important physical activity for humans. Being a fabulous low-intensity exercise, dog walking also reduces the chances of cardiovascular diseases, constipation, and weight gain. Additionally, it gives us the chance to meet and interact with others in the locality, which, in turn, has a profound positive social and psychological impact. Long back, world-renowned chemist Orlando Aloysius Battista said, “A dog is one of the remaining reasons why some people can be persuaded to go for a walk.” His witty remark could not be more fitting. For a dog, a casual walk can mean everything; it might just be their most favourite part of their day, and they likely spend hours eagerly waiting for those few precious minutes with us outside. Therefore, to guarantee our dogs’ happiness, we must allocate time from our busy lives for walks that keep their paws moving and tails wagging. It is the least we can do, given the unconditional companionship they offer us. sen.prarthana19@gmail.com Published - December 01, 2024 04:19 am IST Copy link Email Facebook Twitter Telegram LinkedIn WhatsApp RedditNone

Two people have been arrested after allegedly conducting a "hazardous drone operation" near the airspace of the US city of Boston's main airport, police said. Robert Duffy, 42, and Jeremy Folcik, 32, were arrested on Long Island, part of the Boston Harbor Islands, on Saturday night. They were charged with trespassing and police said they may face further charges and fines over the drones, which were "dangerously close" to Logan International Airport, said police. Their arrests follow a series of drone sightings across the US north-east in recent weeks. Police have given no indication that the sightings are connected to these arrests. Police said the incident in Boston occurred at 16:30 local time (21:30 GMT) when a police officer detected a drone operating "dangerously close" to Logan International Airport. Police said they identified the drone's location and tracked the operators' position to a decommissioned health campus on Long Island. Because of the drone's proximity to an airport, FBI counter-terrorism agents helped the investigation. When officers arrived on the scene, police said three people attempted to flee, two of whom - Mr Duffy and Mr Folcik, were apprehended. A drone was discovered in a backpack carried by Mr Duffy, police said. The third suspect is believed to have fled the island in a small vessel and has not so far been found. It was not immediately clear whether Mr Duffy and Mr Folcik had legal representation. Police said they were yet to be arraigned. US government officials have been seeking to reassure residents of the north-east that no threats have been identified in relation to hundreds of drone sightings across the area. Flying objects have been reported in states including New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut and Massachusetts - with the most sightings reported in New Jersey. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the government was deploying additional resources, personnel and technology to assist New Jersey police in investigating. In an interview with ABC News, he said that the department was working in "close co-ordination" with state and local authorities, adding it was "critical" they be given the ability to counter drone activity under federal supervision. His comments follow New York state Governor Kathy Hochul's demands for more state powers to tackle the issue, after runways at Stewart Airfield had to shut down for about an hour on Friday night. "Congress must pass a law that will give us the power to deal directly with the drones," she added on Sunday, after announcing that a drone detection system was being sent to New York. Mayorkas said the rise in drone sightings could be to do with a change in federal law last year that allows drones to be flown at night. "That may be one of the reasons why now people are seeing more drones than they did before, especially from dawn to dusk," he said. He also said he knew of "no foreign involvement with respect to the sightings in the north-east".Initverse Launches Inichain With The World’S First TFHE-Based EVM

NASA Awards Test Operations ContractHere at CleanTechnica, we have written previously about Camp Pendleton several times, and of particular note was the large solar power installation. Now comes another big story, although it’s about energy storage, not photovoltaics. Typically in the US, energy storage projects that use batteries provide backup and pulses of electricity for about four hours. The new Camp Pendleton energy storage project is longer duration. That’s good news because obviously four hours of battery electricity, although helpful and potentially cleaner than having to use electricity from a natural gas peaker plant, is still only four hours. Energy storage will need to expand in duration to have more applications. The first part of the Camp Pendleton energy storage project will be installing batteries with a 6 MW/48 MWh capacity, and that amount will be added to later. California Energy Commission staff answered some questions about the project for CleanTechnica . The release says the project will provide electricity to the statewide grid and backup power to the base for up to 14 days during power outages. Wouldn’t that be 6 MW for 48 MWh, not 14 days? Where does the 14 days come into the picture? Although the system would be rated for an 8-hour discharge period, it could be discharged for a longer period. An 8-hour discharge is expected for “normal” operation when the system is providing power to the grid, while the 14-day requirement is the Department of Defense requirement under which the installation must have backup power for critical facilities during outages. This grant provides that capability for critical facilities at Camp Pendleton, and when fully built out to 400 MWh will provide that for the entire installation. Zinc hybrid cathode aqueous battery technology will be used. Why use that kind instead of lithium-ion or lithium iron phosphate? This project is funded through California’s Long Duration Energy Storage program, for which the explicit statutory objective is to advance non-lithium-ion long-duration energy storage technologies. Zinc aqueous battery technology is eligible under this program. While lithium-ion batteries are – and will continue to be – an integral component of California’s progress toward its energy storage and overall clean energy commitments, non-lithium-ion batteries have several benefits relative to lithium-ion batteries. In general, these can include: the absence of thermal runaway risks, increasing public safety and allowing batteries to be installed closer to inhabited areas lower levels of system degradation over time and longer lifetimes manufacturability with more abundant materials more economical scaling at higher system capacities and longer discharge durations The deployment of the zinc-aqueous battery system at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton will seek to enhance the Base’s energy resilience in a safe and cost-effective manner. When will the project be expanded to 50 MW/400 MWh? Construction on the 50 MW/400 MWh will begin once the initial 6 MW/48 MWh is complete. We currently expect the 50 MW/400 MWh to be completed by June 2027. Does the base have its own solar power and, if so, how much? The base does have its own solar installations. However, these solar installations are intended to support the base’s existing loads rather than to charge this battery system. Under normal conditions, the battery will be charged from the electric grid rather than on-site solar. During outages, solar may be used to charge the batteries in order to support critical loads for longer durations, but the amount of solar that would be dedicated to this use is left to the discretion of the base. What is the cost of installing the first 6 MW/48 MWh? In the current market, the cost of non-lithium-ion long duration energy storage systems can be reasonably estimated at $1M for every 1 MWh, when considering the overall system costs, including site preparation, construction, all auxiliary materials and equipment, and labor costs, among others. However, each field installation is different, and the MCB Camp Pendleton project site will likely require additional costs; we expect the final cost of the initial 6 MW/48 MWh system to be approximately $70M. The CEC will provide $42M, while the remainder will be borne by the recipient, International Electric Power. About how many jobs will be created during the installation? We expect this project to employ approximately 150 people during construction, and 5 people during operation. CleanTechnica's Comment Policy LinkedIn WhatsApp Facebook Bluesky Email Reddit

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — Rasheed Bello had 19 points in Purdue Fort Wayne's 99-76 victory against Eastern Michigan on Sunday. Bello also contributed eight assists for the Mastodons (8-4). Jalen Jackson scored 17 points while going 7 of 12 from the floor, including 2 for 5 from 3-point range, and 1 for 3 from the line. Corey Hadnot II had 17 points and shot 6 for 8, including 5 for 6 from beyond the arc. Jalen Terry led the Eagles (5-5) in scoring, finishing with 28 points. Jalin Billingsley added 16 points and nine rebounds for Eastern Michigan. Da'Sean Nelson had 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Purdue Fort Wayne took the lead with 18:46 left in the first half and did not relinquish it. The score was 48-34 at halftime, with Jackson racking up 14 points. Purdue Fort Wayne extended its lead to 56-34 during the second half, fueled by an 8-0 scoring run. Maximus Nelson scored a team-high 12 points in the second half as his team closed out the win. The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .IOWA CITY, Iowa — Jahmal Banks let out deep breath that would have been visible a few minutes earlier on the Kinnick Stadium field as the pom-pom atop his red stocking cap bobbed. What’s left? The Nebraska senior receiver hadn’t really considered it yet. His spirits — not to mention body temperature — were too down in the moments after another walk-off loss to Iowa. Regular season over, with this fifth defeat in six games stinging more as the numbness began to wear off. “Get better,” Banks said finally. “Craft. At the end of the day, it’s still football. For the people who are going to be with us, we’ll give everything we have. And just keep going.” The day after the Iowa game has been Blacker Saturday for Nebraska for most of the last decade. It usually marks the end of games and beginning of an offseason of reflection and roster change while other teams play in December and January. These Huskers will be busier. Early signing day moved up even earlier this cycle from mid-December to Wednesday and NU — at 19 known commits into the weekend and potential targets still in the balance — will try to close better than it did in Iowa City. The transfer portal opens Dec. 9 and coach Matt Rhule has said he expects upwards of 50 players to enter as the program begins to trim its roster from 150-plus on the way to next year’s mandated maximum size of 105. Of course, Nebraska will be an active shopper in the free-agent market, too. Unlike the past seven seasons, though, bowl season will also include a Nebraska bowl game. A year ago the matchups for possible bowls the Huskers are contenders for now — including the Music City, Guaranteed Rate, Pinstripe, GameAbove Sports and Duke’s Mayo — were announced the Sunday after conference championship weekend. That gives NU a full week to chew on yet another one-score loss before it has an opponent for which to prepare. While a crowd of Iowa players reveled in boisterous extended postgame interviews, only a few Huskers spoke. Those brief sessions — for just a few minutes each as the team hurried to pack up and return to Lincoln — were more about the future than the painful immediate past. Quarterback Dylan Raiola — like his new offensive coordinator, Dana Holgorsen — said he knew he would take at least a day or two off. “I’m not really sure what’s going to happen next, what bowl we’re going to or what’s going on,” the freshman said. “We’ll figure that out soon.” Senior defensive lineman Ty Robinson wore a straight face as he considered that his sixth and final college season would last longer than any of the others. Even with a likely NFL future coming, don’t count him as part of the modern trend of postseason opt-outs “Come back on Monday,” Robinson said. “It’s new for me so I don’t really know what to expect. I’m excited to be a part of it, though. I love this program. I love that I get to be able to practice and play football for the next few weeks and get to go to a bowl game.” Rhule — as angry as he was upset late Friday — said the Iowa result should “probably bother people” for a while. It should fester with younger players who will be back in red inside Kinnick Stadium in 2026. At some point, he said, Nebraska needs to finish. Chasing three points was the program’s season-long motto and ultimately the Hawkeyes were the ones who caught the triple. “It’s just where we’re at, you know what I mean?” Rhule said. “As dumb as that sounds, we have to get better. Have to get better.” Nebraska has objectively improved in areas from the beginning of the year. The defense was dominant save for one disastrous sequence on the 72-yard touchdown that began with a swing pass to Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson and included five missed tackles. The offense under Holgorsen moved and controlled the ball. But the shortcomings were on display, too. The Huskers forced no takeaways for a second time in November. Too many potential big plays on offense went unmade or unseen. Special teams featured another catastrophic moment on the muffed punt and a series of lesser miscues that consistently tilted field position toward the Hawkeyes. Friday wasn’t the season finale this time. Even it felt like it in the cold. “Losing this game doesn’t do justice to see all the success and the strides we’ve made as a team,” Raiola said. “But that’s what it is right now.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!

haha777 club Protected personal information of more than 1 million people — including about 4,700 Social Security numbers — was accessed from Illinois Department of Human Services files in April, the agency confirmed last week. State agencies are required under the Illinois Personal Information Protection Act to notify the news media of certain reportable breaches of security. In a statement, the Illinois Department of Human Services said it experienced a privacy breach on April 25 when a phishing campaign was used to access a number of employee accounts and the files associated with the accounts. Phishing involves sending seemingly legitimate requests for personal or sensitive information such as passwords or account numbers. IDHS said the files that were accessed included Social Security numbers for 4,704 people. In addition, public assistance account information was accessed for more than 1.1 million people. While that information did not include Social Security numbers, it did have names, public assistance account numbers and some combination of addresses, birthdate, Illinois State Board of Education Student Information System identification numbers and cellphone numbers. "Upon learning of the phishing incident, IDHS worked in partnership with the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology to investigate the extent of the breach and to determine which individuals were included," according to the statement. "This was an in-depth forensic analysis, followed by a manual review of all compromised files to determine the nature of the breach. IDHS continues to train its employees on how to avoid and report phishing attempts." Written notices were sent to those whose Social Security numbers were involved and whose current address was on file. Those notices provide details about available actions, including credit monitoring. Get Government & Politics updates in your inbox! One source briefed by the Trump transition team and a donor briefed on the plans told Reuters of Trump's intention to pick Bessent. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Wall Street has been closely watching who Trump will pick, especially given his plans to remake global trade through tariffs. Bessent was picked from a crowded field of candidates for the coveted role. That list included Apollo Global Management Chief Executive Marc Rowan and former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh. Investor John Paulson had also been a leading candidate, but dropped out while Wall Street veteran Howard Lutnick, another contender, was appointed as head of the Commerce Department. Bessent has advocated for tax reform and deregulation, particularly to spur more bank lending and energy production, as noted in a recent opinion piece he wrote for The Wall Street Journal. The market's surge after Trump's election victory, he wrote, signaled investor "expectations of higher growth, lower volatility and inflation, and a revitalized economy for all Americans." Bessent follows other financial luminaries who have taken the job, including former Goldman Sachs executives Robert Rubin, Hank Paulson and Steven Mnuchin, Trump's first Treasury chief. Janet Yellen, the current secretary and first woman in the job, previously chaired the Federal Reserve and White House Council of Economic Advisers. ECONOMY'S QUARTERBACK As the 79th Treasury secretary, Bessent would essentially be the highest-ranking U.S. economic official, responsible for maintaining the plumbing of the world's largest economy, from collecting taxes and paying the nation's bills to managing the $28.6-trillion Treasury debt market and overseeing financial regulation, including handling and preventing market crises. The Treasury boss also runs U.S. financial sanctions policy, oversees the U.S.-led International Monetary Fund, World Bank and other international financial institutions, and manages national security screenings of foreign investments in the U.S. Bessent would face challenges, including safely managing federal deficits that are forecast to grow by nearly $8 trillion over a decade due to Trump's plans to extend expiring tax cuts next year and add generous new breaks, including ending taxes on Social Security income. Without offsetting revenues, this new debt would add to an unsustainable fiscal trajectory already forecast to balloon U.S. debt by $22 trillion through 2033. Managing debt increases this large without market indigestion will be a challenge, though Bessent has argued Trump's agenda would unleash stronger economic growth that would grow revenue and shore up market confidence. Bessent would also inherit the role carved out by Yellen to lead the Group of Seven wealthy democracies to provide tens of billions of dollars in economic support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia's invasion and tighten sanctions on Moscow. But given Trump's desire to end the war quickly and withdraw U.S. financial support for Ukraine, it is unclear whether he would pursue this. Another area where Bessent will likely differ from Yellen is her focus on climate change, from her mandate that development banks expand lending for clean energy to incorporating climate risks into financial regulations and managing hundreds of billions of dollars in clean energy tax credits. Trump, a climate-change skeptic, has vowed to increase production of U.S. fossil fuel energy and end the clean-energy subsidies in President Joe Biden's 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. FED FACING The Treasury secretary is also the administration’s closest point of contact with the Federal Reserve. Both Yellen under Biden and Mnuchin under Trump typically met weekly with Fed Chair Jerome Powell, often over breakfast or lunch. Bessent has floated the idea of creating a “shadow” Fed chair. This would entail nominating as early as possible a presumptive Powell predecessor to the Fed Board who would then deliver their own policy guidance so that, as Bessent told Barron’s last month, "no one is really going to care what Jerome Powell has to say anymore." The next seat to open up at the Fed Board is that of Governor Adriana Kugler, whose term runs to January 2026. Bessent has since said he no longer thinks the idea of a shadow chair worth pursuing, the Wall Street Journal reported. Powell's term as Fed chair expires in May 2026, and presidents rarely wait until the Fed chief's term ends before nominating a successor. FROM FINANCE TO DC Bessent, 62, primarily lives in Charleston, South Carolina with his husband and two children. He grew up in the fishing village of Little River, South Carolina, where Bessent has said his father, a real estate investor, experienced booms and busts. Bessent worked for noted short seller Jim Chanos in the late 1980s and then joined Soros Fund Management, the famed macroeconomic investment firm of billionaire George Soros. He soon helped Soros and top deputy Stanley Druckenmiller on their most famous trade - shorting the British pound in 1992 and earning the firm more than $1 billion. In 2015, Bessent raised $4.5 billion, including $2 billion from Soros, to launch Key Square Group, a hedge fund firm that bets on macroeconomic trends. Key Square's main fund gained about 31% in 2022, according to media reports, but firm assets have declined to approximately $577 million as of December 2023, according to a regulatory filing. Trump promises death penalty for ‘rapists, murderers’ after Biden pardonsHyundai’s electric SUV has just earned its place in history books. The set a new Guinness World Record after braving the highest driveable road. In a reflection of Hyundai’s “technological prowess,” the company announced on Thursday, December 26, that the IONIQ 5 officially set a new Guinness World Record. The electric SUV achieved the “Greatest altitude change by an electric car” with an altitude change of over 19,000 ft (5,802 m) in “harsh terrain” and “extreme weather conditions.” Hyundai Motor India and Evo India, a leading auto magazine firm, organized the event. The IONIQ 5 began its journey at Umling La in Leh Ladakh, which is known as the world’s highest driveable road, at 19,025 ft (5,799 m) above sea level. After driving 3,080 miles (4,956 km) in just 14 days, the electric SUV achieved an altitude difference of 19,035 ft (5,802 m), Guinness World Record. “The performance of the IONIQ 5, proven under such extreme conditions, reflects Hyundai Motor Company’s technological prowess,” Mr Unsoo Kim, Hyundai Motor India’s managing director, boasted after the accomplishment. Hyundai’s best-selling EV “seamlessly” adapted to “freezing temperatures and steep mountain passes in the Himalayas to humid coastal regions in Kerala.” The electric SUV, powered by a 72.6 kWh battery, has an EPA-estimated driving range of over 300 miles (481 km WLTP). Hyundai’s electric SUV is getting even more powerful. The accomplishment comes as the is rolling out in the US. The refreshed model gets even more driving range and a stylish new design. It even comes with an NACS charging port to access Tesla Superchargers. Thanks to a bigger (84 kWh) battery, the 2025 IONIQ 5 has a driving range of 318 miles, up from 303 with the outgoing model. The upgraded model starts at $42,500, while the long-range version costs just under $50,000. It will be built at Hyundai’s new manufacturing plant in Georgia. The Korean auto giant is also launching its first three-row electric SUV, the IONIQ 9. Hyundai at the LA Auto Show last month as it expands into new segments. At 5,060 mm (199.2′′) long, 1,980 mm (78′′) wide, and 1,790 mm (70.5′′) tall, the IONIQ 9 is a bit smaller than the at 200.8′′ long, 82′′ wide, and 77.3′′ tall. The IONIQ 9 is powered by a massive 110.2 kWh battery, good for an EPA-est range of 335 miles, or 620 km on the WLTP cycle. Hyundai will build the three-row EV in Georgia alongside the 2025 IONIQ 5. It will be available in the US and Korea in the first half of 2025, followed shortly after by Europe and other global markets. Uganda Cranes forward Ivan Ahimbisibwe says that the team is all ready for their two-legged fixture on December 26 and 29, 2024, against Burundi in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 Qualifier at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo. Briefing the media this morning after the Cranes wrapped up their final non-residential training session at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, Ahimbisibwe said the team, which began non-residential training on December 21, will move into camp on December 25 at Nob View Hotel to prepare for the two matches. It is important to note that Uganda, alongside Kenya and Tanzania, has already secured its place at the tournament as a co-host. Meanwhile, Burundi and other nations in the region are competing for the fourth and final slot allocated to East Africa. Ahimbisibwe said the team is in good spirits and has been well-prepared by the coaching staff for the challenge ahead. On CHAN being hosted in Uganda, Ahimbisibwe remarked that it is a significant opportunity for the country to improve its disappointing CHAN record and for the players to showcase their talent on an international stage. Uganda has qualified for the CHAN tournament six times in a row, participating in the 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020 editions. However, the team has yet to progress beyond the group stage in any of these tournaments. Meanwhile, CAF recently granted permission to both Uganda and Burundi to play their African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 Qualifier matches at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, making it the first senior continental fixture the stadium will host its re-opening earlier this year. According to a statement from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), CAF limited the number of fans allowed into the stadium to 7,000 for each game to ensure proper crowd control. This represents half of Nakivubo’s estimated 15,000-seat capacity. But, Rogers Mulindwa, the stadium’s spokesperson, told this publication that they are prepared to comply with all directives as this is the stadium’s inaugural continental assignment. ***** URN

AP News Summary at 3:45 p.m. ESTWashington, Dec 27 (AP) The Biden administration has imposed sanctions on the founder of Georgia's ruling political party, which has steered the country away from a pro-Western stance and towards Russia, US officials said on Friday. The State and Treasury departments said they hit Georgian Dream party founder and honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili with penalties “for undermining the democratic and Euro-Atlantic future of Georgia for the benefit of the Russian Federation", according to a statement. Also Read | US Embassy in India Scripts Record, Issues 1 Million Visas for Second Consecutive Year. The designation of Ivanishvili is the latest in a series of sanctions the US has slapped on Georgian politicians, lawmakers and others this year. Those sanctions include freezes on assets and properties those targeted may have in US jurisdictions or that might enter US jurisdictions as well as travel bans on the targets and members of their families. “We strongly condemn Georgian Dream's actions under Ivanishvili's leadership, including its ongoing and violent repression of Georgian citizens, protestors, members of the media, human rights activists, and opposition figures,” the State Department said in a statement. “The United States is committed to promoting accountability for those undermining democracy and human rights in Georgia." Ivanishvili is a shadowy billionaire who made his fortune in Russia and served briefly as Georgia's prime minister. In 2012, he founded Georgian Dream, Georgia's longtime ruling party. Critics have accused Georgian Dream of becoming increasingly authoritarian and tilted toward Moscow. The party recently pushed through laws similar to those used by the Kremlin to crack down on freedom of speech and LGBTQ+ rights, prompting the European Union to suspend Georgia's membership application process indefinitely. In October, Georgian Dream won another term in a divisive parliamentary election that has led to more mass protests. Last month, the country's prime minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced a four-year suspension of talks on Georgia's bid to join the European Union, fuelling further public outrage. Pakistani authorities launch operation to clear Imran Khan supporters from the capitalMIAMI (AP) — Jimmy Butler will not play in the final two games of Miami’s ongoing road trip while recovering from illness, the team said Friday. That means Butler will not play Saturday at Atlanta or Sunday at Houston. The earliest he could play again is Wednesday at home against New Orleans. Butler hasn’t played since the first quarter of Miami’s Dec. 20 game against Oklahoma City, when he twisted an ankle, left the game and then was ruled out because of illness. Miami has played three games since without Butler, two because of the illness and then Thursday’s win in Orlando with him back in Miami conditioning for a return. He is not with the team on the road trip. The Heat said Thursday that they are not going to trade Butler, that announcement coming after ESPN, citing sources, said the six-time All-Star would prefer to be moved before the trade deadline on Feb. 6. Butler has not publicly expressed any desire to be traded. He is averaging 18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season. ___ AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA

The complaints, which have surfaced through the Commission’s public inquiry mechanism, primarily focus on allegations of corruption by some judicial officers and prolonged delays in concluding cases. Peter Chisi, the Director of Political and Civil Rights at MHRC, stated that the Commission is now set to conduct a thorough investigation into these allegations. The process will involve an in-depth analysis of the complaints, and the Commission expects to provide its final determinations on the matter early next year. According to Chisi, the complaints point to a disturbing trend within the judiciary, where some judicial officers are accused of engaging in corrupt practices that undermine the integrity of the justice system. Additionally, the reports highlight significant delays in the resolution of cases, which have caused frustration among citizens who are seeking justice. “These complaints reflect concerns from the public about the conduct of some judicial officers,” Chisi explained. “Our mandate is to ensure that these complaints are addressed, and the public can have confidence in the judiciary’s ability to dispense justice fairly and promptly.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The MHRC’s public inquiry into the judiciary’s conduct follows a series of widespread concerns about the performance of the judicial system. For many Malawians, these allegations are a sign of deeper issues affecting the judiciary and its role in upholding the rule of law. Governance commentator, Wonderful Mkhutche, has described the 25 complaints received by the MHRC as “only the tip of the iceberg.” Mkhutche emphasized that while the MHRC’s inquiry is a welcome step, it is likely that many more instances of corruption and inefficiency in the judiciary remain unreported. “The public’s perception of the judiciary is one that is clouded by distrust,” Mkhutche remarked. “We can only expect that there are many more cases that have not been brought forward. The question now is what action will be taken by the responsible authorities to address these concerns comprehensively.” Mkhutche’s comments underscore a growing sentiment among many Malawians who feel that the judiciary, like other public institutions, is plagued by corruption and inefficiency. For these citizens, any meaningful reform of the judicial system will require a serious commitment to transparency and accountability from both the judiciary itself and the bodies responsible for overseeing its operations. Human rights lawyer Alexious Kamangira has weighed in on the issue, noting that the public’s trust in the MHRC is stronger than in the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), the body that is supposed to oversee the judiciary’s conduct. Kamangira, who has long been vocal about the need for judicial reform in Malawi, expressed confidence in the MHRC’s ability to handle the investigation, while criticizing the JSC for its perceived inaction and inability to address allegations of corruption within the judiciary. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); “Malawians trust the MHRC more than the Judicial Service Commission when it comes to dealing with corruption within the judiciary,” Kamangira said. “The JSC has often been silent or ineffective in responding to public concerns about judicial misconduct, which has led to a loss of confidence in its ability to ensure accountability in the justice system.” Kamangira’s remarks reflect broader concerns within civil society about the lack of effective oversight in the judicial system. With the public questioning the credibility of the JSC, many are looking to the MHRC as a more reliable institution to take action and bring about much-needed reform in the judiciary. As the MHRC begins its in-depth analysis of the complaints, questions remain about what actions will follow the inquiry’s findings. Both legal experts and governance commentators have called for greater transparency, accountability, and swift action to tackle corruption and delays within the judiciary. For the judiciary to regain public trust, experts suggest that the system must not only address individual instances of misconduct but also tackle the systemic issues that allow such corruption to flourish. They advocate for the introduction of stronger measures to hold judicial officers accountable and for reforms aimed at ensuring the timely resolution of cases. The MHRC’s inquiry is a crucial step in addressing these concerns, but it will need the support of all relevant stakeholders, including the government, civil society, and the judiciary itself, to ensure meaningful change. As the Commission moves forward with its investigations, the public will be watching closely, hoping for a resolution that leads to a more transparent and accountable judiciary. Heat say Jimmy Butler will miss 2 more games before rejoining team next week

Heat say Jimmy Butler will miss 2 more games before rejoining team next weekDALLAS (AP) — More than 60 years after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated , conspiracy theories still swirl and any new glimpse into the fateful day of Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas continues to fascinate . President-elect Donald Trump promised during his reelection campaign that he would declassify all of the remaining government records surrounding the assassination if he returned to office. He made a similar pledge during his first term, but ultimately bended to appeals from the CIA and FBI to keep some documents withheld. At this point, only a few thousand of the millions of governmental records related to the assassination have yet to be fully released, and those who have studied the records released so far say that even if the remaining files are declassified, the public shouldn't anticipate any earth-shattering revelations. “Anybody waiting for a smoking gun that’s going to turn this case upside down will be sorely disappointed,” said Gerald Posner, author of “Case Closed,” which concludes that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Friday's 61st anniversary is expected to be marked with a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m. in Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy's motorcade was passing through when he was fatally shot. And throughout this week there have been events marking the anniversary. When Air Force One carrying Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy touched down in Dallas , they were greeted by a clear sky and enthusiastic crowds. With a reelection campaign on the horizon the next year, they had gone to Texas on political fence-mending trip. But as the motorcade was finishing its parade route downtown, shots rang out from the Texas School Book Depository building. Police arrested 24-year-old Oswald and, two days later, nightclub owner Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald during a jail transfer. A year after the assassination, the Warren Commission, which President Lyndon B. Johnson established to investigate the assassination, concluded that Oswald acted alone and there was no evidence of a conspiracy. But that hasn't quelled a web of alternative theories over the decades. In the early 1990s, the federal government mandated that all assassination-related documents be housed in a single collection in the National Archives and Records Administration. The collection of over 5 million records was required to be opened by 2017, barring any exemptions designated by the president. Trump, who took office for his first term in 2017, had boasted that he'd allow the release of all of the remaining records but ended up holding some back because of what he called the potential harm to national security. And while files have continued to be released during President Joe Biden's administration, some still remain unseen. The documents released over the last few years offer details on the way intelligence services operated at the time, and include CIA cables and memos discussing visits by Oswald to the Soviet and Cuban embassies during a trip to Mexico City just weeks before the assassination. The former Marine had previously defected to the Soviet Union before returning home to Texas. Mark S. Zaid, a national security attorney in Washington, said what's been released so far has contributed to the understanding of the time period, giving “a great picture” of what was happening during the Cold War and the activities of the CIA. Posner estimates that there are still about 3,000 to 4,000 documents in the collection that haven’t yet been fully released. Of those documents, some are still completely redacted while others just have small redactions, like someone's Social Security number. There are about 500 documents where all the information is redacted, Posner said, and those include Oswald's and Ruby’s tax returns. “If you have been following it, as I have and others have, you sort of are zeroed in on the pages you think might provide some additional information for history,” Posner said. Trump's transition team hasn’t responded to questions this week about his plans when he takes office. From the start, there were those who believed there had to be more to the story than just Oswald acting alone, said Stephen Fagin, curator of the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination from the building where Oswald made his sniper's perch. “People want to make sense of this and they want to find the solution that fits the crime," said Fagin, who said that while there are lingering questions, law enforcement made “a pretty compelling case” against Oswald. Larry J. Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, said his interest in the assassination dates back to the event itself, when he was a child. “It just seemed so fantastical that one very disturbed individual could end up pulling off the crime of the century," Sabato said. “But the more I studied it, the more I realized that is a very possible, maybe even probable in my view, hypothesis.”

Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch the AirTag 2, possibly in mid-2025, boasting a new ultrawide-band (UWB) chip similar to the iPhone 15’s. This upgrade promises a significant boost in tracking range and accuracy, potentially tripling the current range. The AirTag, Apple’s Bluetooth tracker, has become a popular way to keep tabs on personal belongings. Launched in 2021, it allows users to locate items like keys, wallets, and bags through the Find My app on their Apple devices. However, limitations in range and concerns about unwanted tracking have prompted Apple to develop a successor. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the AirTag 2 is expected to feature a new UWB chip, akin to the one found in the iPhone 15, that could significantly enhance its capabilities. This improved technology is poised to address current shortcomings and elevate the user experience . What’s the Buzz About? The rumored AirTag 2 has generated considerable excitement among tech enthusiasts and Apple users. The anticipated improvements, particularly in tracking range, address a key limitation of the current model. Imagine being able to locate your misplaced keys from across the house with pinpoint accuracy, or finding your lost luggage in a crowded airport terminal with ease. This is the promise of the AirTag 2. Personally, I’ve been using AirTags since they launched, and while I appreciate their convenience, there have been times when the limited range proved frustrating. For instance, I once misplaced my keys in a park, and despite being relatively close, the AirTag signal was too weak to pinpoint their exact location. The prospect of a significantly extended range in the AirTag 2 is a game-changer for me. Enhanced UWB Chip: The Game Changer The key to the AirTag 2’s improved performance lies in the upgraded UWB chip. This technology allows for more precise location tracking compared to standard Bluetooth. Current AirTags have a range of roughly 10 to 30 meters, but with the new chip, this could potentially triple, offering a significant improvement in tracking capabilities. Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models feature a tool named Precision Finding, which utilizes UWB technology to locate friends in crowded areas with a range of up to nearly 60 meters (around 200 feet). The AirTag 2 is expected to offer a similar range, making it far easier to locate lost items even in challenging environments. Beyond Range: Other Potential Improvements While the increased range is the most anticipated upgrade, the AirTag 2 is also rumored to feature other improvements, including: Addressing Concerns and Looking Ahead Despite its popularity, the AirTag has faced criticism regarding its potential for misuse in stalking and unwanted tracking. Apple has taken steps to address these concerns with software updates and anti-stalking features. It is expected that the AirTag 2 will build upon these efforts with enhanced security measures. The AirTag 2 represents a significant step forward in personal item tracking. With its extended range, improved accuracy, and enhanced security features, it promises to be an even more useful and reliable tool for keeping track of our belongings. As someone who relies on AirTags daily, I am eagerly awaiting its release and the improvements it will bring. How badly does want to win? That’s the question. If he really cared about a World Series ring, Judge, , would sell his fancy new trophy on eBay and give the proceeds to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman so the club can sign another bullpen arm for 2025. That’s what a real captain would do. Derek Jeter, the perfect example of Yankees leadership, had the perspective and wherewithal to never play well enough to warrant winning such a selfish award. Look, I’m not saying that Judge should play worse during the regular season next year; that’s preposterous. But if he melted the AL MVP trophy down and had it remade into a sculpture of the 2024 Dodgers celebrating their world championship and then put that sculpture on his bedside table so he could wake up every morning properly motivated, it wouldn’t be the most inappropriate thing. It’s tradition for MVP winners to accept their awards at the annual BBWAA New York Chapter dinner in January. And while I’m sure fans would love to see Judge there, he should honestly be spending that time in the gym or the batting cage for the 2025 season. A night in a tuxedo with boring writers like me isn’t working toward the ultimate goal of a Yankees parade. As they say, if you aren’t getting better, you’re getting worse. , is a different story, his own overlooked postseason struggles aside. Sure, the Dodger dynamo’s October OPS was only 15 points higher than Judge’s, but With Judge, that’s clearly not the case. And don’t forget: The last time Judge won this award, back in 2022, the Yankees were a train wreck the following season, missing out on the playoffs. Does the Yankees captain really want to tempt fate again? Might be best to let , who finished second in AL MVP voting, take the award. People speak volumes about Judge’s steadiness and consistency during the marathon of a 162-game season. That’s pretty cool, I guess, but I’d rather have a totally erratic teammate who wakes up hungover on Oct. 1 and clobbers 15 playoff bombs. Not somebody like Judge, who finished this past postseason with a ... .752 OPS, which ... actually isn’t that bad? Huh. How 'bout that? You know what? Maybe it’s best to hold multiple thoughts in our heads at the same time. Yes, Judge underwhelmed by his lofty standards in a 14-game postseason sample, but maybe, just maybe, that doesn’t invalidate what was an all-time magnificent offensive performance in the regular season. Judge’s 2024 was, by OPS+, the best season by a hitter since Barry Bonds put up a 263 OPS+ in 2004. The titanic Yankees outfielder finished the season with a comical stat line: 58 home runs, a .322 batting average, an 1.159 OPS and an adjusted OPS 123% better than league average. Only three players in MLB history have posted an OPS+ higher than Judge’s 223 mark this year: Bonds, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams. Not too shabby. And sure, as my idiotic ramblings above alluded to, Judge’s struggles on the big stage leave an unfortunate haze over our collective memory of his season. It’s a fact, one he knows and one he has owned: When the games mattered most, Judge was not at his best. Whether that’s because he can’t handle the spotlight or because baseball is difficult and random is up to the eye of the beholder. Just remember that the that it’s impossible to pin on any one soul. Maybe I’m being the “ , but whatever. Judge's outstanding 162 cannot simply wipe away his autumnal stumble. Yet at the same time, his substandard October shouldn’t completely overshadow six months of downright dominance. Both are true, both are important, and both tell the story of Aaron Judge’s 2024, a season that we’ll remember for a long, long time. Hopefully, for all the right reasons.NEW DELHI: Amidst the mounting tensions between India and Bangladesh due to atrocities against Hindus, some educational institutions in Bangladesh painted the Indian tricolour on the floor and urged students to walk over them. The ISKCON emblem and Israeli flag were also desecrated. The institutions included the Bogura Poly Technic Institute, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka University (Ganit Bhavan) and Noakhali Science and Technology University, “A few educational institutions in Bangladesh saw the desecration of the Indian tricolour, which was painted on the floor and students were urged to walk over them,” Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah told . On Saturday, another Hindu priest Shyam Das Prabhu was arrested in Chittagong. The arrest took place when he went to the jail to meet Chinmoy Das, a monk associated with ISKCON who had been arrested earlier. The bank accounts of 17 ISKCON members in Bangladesh including that of Chinmoy Das were frozen for one month. Meanwhile, the family of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, who was murdered near the court premises in Chittagong on the day protests against the arrest of Chinmoy Das took place, has filed a case naming 31 individuals and 10-15 unidentified others. Those identified are allegedly Hindus and followers of Chinmoy Das. Amidst these tensions, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Saturday said they expect to establish a good relationship with India in the context of the changed situation post August 5. “We want to remain optimistic that we would be able to establish a good relationship with India making sure that bilateral interests are protected,” he said.

He says if things don’t change after he takes office next month, “We will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America, in full, quickly and without question.” Trump has long threatened allies with punitive action in hopes of winning concessions. But experts in both countries are clear: Unless he goes to war with Panama, Trump can’t reassert control over a canal the U.S. agreed to cede in the 1970s. Here’s a look at how we got here: It is a man-made waterway that uses a series of locks and reservoirs over 51 miles (82 kilometers) to cut through the middle of Panama and connect the Atlantic and Pacific. It spares ships having to go an additional roughly 7,000 miles (more than 11,000 kilometers) to sail around Cape Horn at South America’s southern tip. The U.S. International Trade Administration says the canal saves American business interests “considerable time and fuel costs” and enables faster delivery of goods, which is “particularly significant for time sensitive cargoes, perishable goods, and industries with just-in-time supply chains.” An effort to establish a canal through Panama led by Ferdinand de Lesseps, who built Egypt’s Suez Canal, began in 1880 but progressed little over nine years before going bankrupt. Malaria, yellow fever and other tropical diseases devastated a workforce already struggling with especially dangerous terrain and harsh working conditions in the jungle, eventually costing more than 20,000 lives, by some estimates. Panama was then a province of Colombia, which refused to ratify a subsequent 1901 treaty licensing U.S. interests to build the canal. Roosevelt responded by dispatching U.S. warships to Panama’s Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The U.S. also prewrote a constitution that would be ready after Panamanian independence, giving American forces “the right to intervene in any part of Panama, to re-establish public peace and constitutional order.” In part because Colombian troops were unable to traverse harsh jungles, Panama declared an effectively bloodless independence within hours in November 1903. It soon signed a treaty allowing a U.S.-led team to begin construction . Some 5,600 workers died later during the U.S.-led construction project, according to one study. The waterway opened in 1914, but almost immediately some Panamanians began questioning the validity of U.S. control, leading to what became known in the country as the “generational struggle” to take it over. The U.S. abrogated its right to intervene in Panama in the 1930s. By the 1970s, with its administrative costs sharply increasing, Washington spent years negotiating with Panama to cede control of the waterway. The Carter administration worked with the government of Omar Torrijos. The two sides eventually decided that their best chance for ratification was to submit two treaties to the U.S. Senate, the “Permanent Neutrality Treaty” and the “Panama Canal Treaty.” The first, which continues in perpetuity, gives the U.S. the right to act to ensure the canal remains open and secure. The second stated that the U.S. would turn over the canal to Panama on Dec. 31, 1999, and was terminated then. Both were signed in 1977 and ratified the following year. The agreements held even after 1989, when President George H.W. Bush invaded Panama to remove Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega. In the late 1970s, as the handover treaties were being discussed and ratified, polls found that about half of Americans opposed the decision to cede canal control to Panama. However, by the time ownership actually changed in 1999, public opinion had shifted, with about half of Americans in favor. Administration of the canal has been more efficient under Panama than during the U.S. era, with traffic increasing 17% between fiscal years 1999 and 2004 . Panama’s voters approved a 2006 referendum authorizing a major expansion of the canal to accommodate larger modern cargo ships. The expansion took until 2016 and cost more than $5.2 billion. Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino said in a video Sunday that “every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to.” He added that, while his country’s people are divided on some key issues, “when it comes to our canal, and our sovereignty, we will all unite under our Panamanian flag.” Shipping prices have increased because of droughts last year affecting the canal locks, forcing Panama to drastically cut shipping traffic through the canal and raise rates to use it. Though the rains have mostly returned, Panama says future fee increases might be necessary as it undertakes improvements to accommodate modern shipping needs. Mulino said fees to use the canal are “not set on a whim.” Jorge Luis Quijano, who served as the waterway’s administrator from 2014 to 2019, said all canal users are subject to the same fees, though they vary by ship size and other factors. “I can accept that the canal’s customers may complain about any price increase,” Quijano said. “But that does not give them reason to consider taking it back.” The president-elect says the U.S. is getting “ripped off” and “I’m not going to stand for it.” “It was given to Panama and to the people of Panama, but it has provisions — you’ve got to treat us fairly. And they haven’t treated us fairly,” Trump said of the 1977 treaty that he said “foolishly” gave the canal away. The neutrality treaty does give the U.S. the right to act if the canal’s operation is threatened due to military conflict — but not to reassert control. “There’s no clause of any kind in the neutrality agreement that allows for the taking back of the canal,” Quijano said. “Legally, there’s no way, under normal circumstances, to recover territory that was used previously.” Trump, meanwhile, hasn’t said how he might make good on his threat. “There’s very little wiggle room, absent a second U.S. invasion of Panama, to retake control of the Panama Canal in practical terms,” said Benjamin Gedan, director of the Latin America Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. Gedan said Trump’s stance is especially baffling given that Mulino is a pro-business conservative who has “made lots of other overtures to show that he would prefer a special relationship with the United States.” He also noted that Panama in recent years has moved closer to China, meaning the U.S. has strategic reasons to keep its relationship with the Central American nation friendly. Panama is also a U.S. partner on stopping illegal immigration from South America — perhaps Trump’s biggest policy priority. “If you’re going to pick a fight with Panama on an issue,” Gedan said, “you could not find a worse one than the canal.” Weissert reported from West Palm Beach, Florida, and Fields from Washington. Amelia Thomson-Deveaux contributed to this report from Washington.DETROIT (AP) — If Donald Trump makes good on his threat to slap 25% tariffs on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, the price increases that could follow will collide with his campaign promise to give American families a break from inflation. Economists say companies would have little choice but to pass along the added costs, dramatically raising prices for food, clothing, automobiles, booze and other goods. The president-elect floated the tariff idea, including additional 10% taxes on goods from China, as a way to force the countries to halt the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the U.S. But his posts Monday on Truth Social threatening the tariffs on his first day in office could just be a negotiating ploy to get the countries to change behavior. High food prices were a major issue in voters picking Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris, but tariffs almost certainly would push those costs up even further. For instance, the Produce Distributors Association, a Washington trade group, said Tuesday that tariffs will raise prices for fresh fruit and vegetables and hurt U.S. farmers when other countries retaliate. “Tariffs distort the marketplace and will raise prices along the supply chain, resulting in the consumer paying more at the checkout line,” said Alan Siger, association president. Mexico and Canada are two of the biggest exporters of fresh fruit and vegetables to the U.S. In 2022, Mexico supplied 51% of fresh fruit and 69% of fresh vegetables imported by value into the U.S., while Canada supplied 2% of fresh fruit and 20% of fresh vegetables. Before the election, about 7 in 10 voters said they were very concerned about the cost of food, according to AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters. “We’ll get them down,” Trump told shoppers during a September visit to a Pennsylvania grocery store. The U.S. is the largest importer of goods in the world, with Mexico, China and Canada its top three suppliers, according to the most recent U.S. Census data. People looking to buy a new vehicle likely would see big price increases as well, at a time when costs have gone up so much that they are out of reach for many. The average price of a new vehicle now runs around $48,000. About 15% of the 15.6 million new vehicles sold in the U.S. last year came from Mexico, while 8% crossed the border from Canada, according to Global Data. Much of the tariffs would get passed along to consumers, unless automakers can somehow quickly find productivity improvements to offset them, said C.J. Finn, U.S. automotive sector leader for PwC, a consulting firm. That means even more consumers “would potentially get priced out of the activity” of buying a new vehicle, Finn said. Hardest hit would be Volkswagen, Stellantis, General Motors and Ford, Bernstein analyst Daniel Roeska wrote Tuesday in a note to investors. Stellantis and VW import about 40% of the vehicles they sell from Canada and Mexico, while it's 30% for GM and 25% for Ford. GM and Stellantis import more than half of their high-profit pickup trucks from the two countries, according to Bernstein. If Trump does impose the tariffs in January, the auto industry would have little time to adjust, putting operating profits at risk for the automakers, Roeska said in an email. “A 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada would severely cripple the U.S. auto industry,” he said. The tariffs would hurt U.S. industrial production so much that “we expect this is unlikely to happen in practice,” Roeska said. The tariff threat hit the stocks of some companies that could be particularly hurt, such as auto manufacturers and Constellation Brands, which sells Modelo and other Mexican beer brands in the United States. But the overall market held relatively steady near records as investors saw Trump’s proposal as more of an opening position for negotiations rather than as a definitive policy. It's not clear how long the tariffs would last if they are implemented, but they could force auto executives to move production to the U.S., which could create more jobs in the long run. But Morningstar analyst David Whiston said in the short term automakers probably won't make any moves because they can't quickly change where they build vehicles. To move to the U.S., they would have to buy equipment and revamp their parts supply chain, which can take years. “I think everyone is going to be in a wait-and-see mode,” Whiston said. Millions of dollars worth of auto parts flow across the borders with Mexico and Canada, and that could raise prices for already costly automobile repairs, Finn said. The Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. said tariffs on tequila or Canadian whisky won’t boost American jobs because they are distinctive products that can only be made in their country of origin. In 2023, the U.S. imported $4.6 billion worth of tequila and $108 million worth of mezcal from Mexico and $537 million worth of spirits from Canada, the council said. “At the end of the day, tariffs on spirits products from our neighbors to the north and south are going to hurt U.S. consumers and lead to job losses across the U.S. hospitality industry just as these businesses continue their long recovery from the pandemic,” the council said in a statement. Electronics retailer Best Buy said on its third-quarter earnings conference call that it runs on thin profit margins, so while vendors and the company will shoulder some increases, Best Buy will have to pass tariffs on to customers. “These are goods that people need, and higher prices are not helpful,” CEO Corie Barry said. Walmart also warned this week that tariffs could force it to raise prices, as did Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who talked with Trump after his call for tariffs, said they had a good conversation about how the countries can work together on the challenges they face. "This is something that we can do, laying out the facts and moving forward in constructive ways. This is a relationship that we know takes a certain amount of working on and that’s what we’ll do,” Trudeau said. Trump's transition team wouldn't comment on the call. Also Monday, Trump turned his ire to China, saying he has “had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States – But to no avail.” The Chinese Embassy in Washington cautioned on Monday that there will be losers on all sides if there is a trade war. Trump's threats come as arrests for illegally crossing the border from Mexico have been falling . The most recent U.S. numbers for October show arrests remain near four-year lows. But arrests for illegally crossing the border from Canada have been rising over the past two years. Much of America’s fentanyl is smuggled from Mexico. Border seizures of the drug rose sharply under President Joe Biden. The tariffs would also throw into doubt the reliability of the 2020 trade deal brokered in large part by Trump with Canada and Mexico, the USMCA, which replaced NAFTA and is up for review in 2026. Trump transition team officials did not immediately respond to questions about what authority he would use, what he would need to see to prevent the tariffs from being implemented and how they would impact prices in the U.S. Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department and Economy Department also had no immediate reaction to Trump’s statements. ___ Rugaber reported from Washington. Today, as visitors from far and wide gaze upon the marble figure of the man with the glass of milk, they sense the weight of history and the echoes of a story long forgotten. Behind the serene facade of Rivertown's most famous sculpture lies a tale of heartbreak and redemption, of secrets buried and truths revealed. The farmer's journey, though fraught with danger and despair, ultimately led him to a place of healing and closure, a place where the past and the present intersect in a haunting dance of memory and meaning.

Lion wakes up Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer IqbalPlans have emerged to tear down the over 100-foot tall coaling tower along U.S. 12 in Michigan City just east of the Uptown Arts District. Amtrak, whose trains now run on the rail line, is seeking an exception to the city’s noise ordinance to demolish the deteriorating reinforced concrete structure built in 1923. Lorenzo Perez, project manager for Amtrak, said the tear-down is planned over a 14-day period beginning at the earliest in September of 2025. He said the work can’t begin sooner because of the amount of time anticipated for the demolition to receive final approval from the Federal Railroad Administration. Perez said the demolition was moved up by at least one year because of the hazard the structure from continued decline in its already deteriorating condition might start posing to the eight passenger trains running underneath it daily. “Safety is really the driver of it,” he said. The city’s noise ordinance prohibits such work from occurring between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. The plan by Amtrak is to work around the clock to avoid extending the amount of time required to complete the tear-down since no trains will run on the line during the demolition. Buses will be used to transport passengers between Chicago and New Buffalo, Mich. until the job is finished. Skyler York, Director of Planning and Inspection for the city, said the tower is cast-in-place concrete construction reinforced by rebar inside the concrete, which requires demolition to start at the top and work its way down pieces at a time. “They looked at three to four different methods and this is the way it needs to come down,” he said. Any break in the work would add to the risk of collapse before completion because there are no beams within the concrete for enough stability to pause demolition between eight to 12-hour shifts. “Once they start, they’re just going to keep tearing it down, essentially, and then clean up,” he said. Perez said much of the noise will be from jackhammers breaking up the concrete to expose the rebar, which are steel rods that will be cut and removed. York took the request during a November 18 public hearing under advisement, saying later that he expects to grant an exception to the noise ordinance as long as Amtrak agrees to conditions he will submit to the railroad in writing. The conditions include notifying nearby property owners about the demolition in advance and having a plan to control dust. Noise is not expected to be a major issue with a scattered number of homes in the immediate area dominated more by industries such as chemical makers Shell Catalysts and Technologies and USALCO. Perez said U.S. 12 will remain open during the teardown. According to history, the tower was erected by the Michigan Central Railroad to service the steam-powered engines on its trains carrying freight and passengers with fresh loads of coal and water. Burning coal heated the water to create the steam that powered the engines. At the time, the tower was among the first ones to allow trains to pull underneath to refuel instead of switching to another set of tracks to reach a coaling station. Perez said the tower stopped being used in the early 1960s once the engines on trains started being powered by diesel fuel. People who appreciate the history of trains might be sad to see the coaling tower disappear from the landscape. Michigan City resident Tommy Kalavik, though, welcomed the decision. He views the structure as both a safety threat and an eyesore. “I’m glad to this structure finally going down. It should have been torn down 30 years ago, if you ask me,” he said.

According to Mr. Y, the decision to undergo selective reduction was not taken lightly, as it involved difficult ethical considerations, but ultimately they felt it was the best choice for the health and well-being of both the mother and the babies. However, he expressed outrage when he received the medical bill for the procedure, amounting to over $40,000, and sought reimbursement from the hospital, citing negligence and inadequate counseling on the risks and costs involved.MILAN, Italy (Reuters) -Inter Milan toiled to a 2-0 victory over lowly Como thanks to second-half goals from Carlos Augusto and Marcus Thuram on Monday to remain within touching distance of the Serie A summit. The win lifted third-placed Inter to 37 points, leaving them three points off leaders Atalanta, who beat Empoli 3-2 on Sunday, and one behind second-placed Napoli, after they won 2-1 at Genoa on Saturday. Inter have a game in hand on the top two. Defending champions Inter dominated the first half but squandered a number of chances, with the unmarked Denzel Dumfries firing over from close range and Federico Dimarco shooting straight at Como’s veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Inter finally scored with Augusto’s towering far-post header from a Hakan Calhanoglu corner three minutes after the break. “Happy for the goal, but more important is the victory. We knew it was a tough game but we got three points,” left back Augusto told Sky Italia. “We knew it was a different league last year, this year there are many strong teams. But I have confidence in my team mates who are the best in the world. We’ll see at the end”. The visitors looked more dangerous after going behind, with man of the match Augusto making a crucial interception to deny Edoardo Goldaniga an equaliser and Yann Sommer pulling off a great save to keep out an effort from Nico Paz. Inter kept pushing to extend their lead but captain Lautaro Martinez saw his 68th-minute effort disallowed for offside, extending his goal drought that has lasted more than a month. Thuram sealed the win two minutes into stoppage time with a powerful shot past Reina to reach 12 league goals, level with Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui in the Serie A scoring chart. “Even in matches in which we are not 100% brilliant, it’s important to win,” said Inter centre-back Alessandro Bastoni. “Especially because the others had already played and won, so we had to give a positive response.” (Reporting by Janina Nuno Rios in Mexico City; Editing by Ken Ferris) Disclaimer: This report is auto generated from the Reuters news service. Ter Stegen, who joined Barcelona in 2014 from Borussia Mönchengladbach, has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world during his time at the Camp Nou. His exceptional shot-stopping abilities, commanding presence in the box, and exceptional distribution skills have endeared him to the Barcelona faithful and made him an integral part of the team.In a couple of days, Christians across the world will celebrate the birth of a child. While this child, for people of faith, certainly was a pretty special one, you don't have to be a Christian to know that all children are a gift to humanity. But at the highest level of American politics, we have seen two strikingly different approaches to recognizing this gift. On the one hand, there is (alleged) President Joe Biden, who chose to celebrate the upcoming birth of Christ by commuting the sentences of 37 of 40 federal death row inmates, several of whom were child murderers . This comes as no surprise from the party that celebrates abortion and says that trafficked children are 'not their problem. ' You honestly have to wonder if there is any saving the Democrat Party at this point. Thankfully, on the other hand, there is President-elect Donald Trump, who spoke out again about protecting children and celebrating them for who they are, not who the gender cult wants them to be. At the recent Americafest in Arizona, an event held by Turning Point USA, Trump delivered powerful remarks about ending the harm that transgenderism is doing to America's children. Watch: TRUMP: “We’re going to stop the transgender lunacy. I will sign executive orders to end child s*xual m*tilation, get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools. We will keep men our of women’s sports!” “It will be the official policy of the United States... pic.twitter.com/Lb7hP2wG58 The full last sentence of the tweet and Trump's remarks are as follows: “It will be the official policy of the United States Government that there are only 2 genders, male and female.” Ending child sexual mutilation (which is all 'gender-affirming care' is), keeping men out of women's sports, and declaring that America believes in science by stating a policy that only two sexes/genders exist: male and female. This is not the first time Trump has promised to enact these policies, but we think it is the first time he has done so since he was elected, certainly the first time he has said it so forcefully and definitively. Sorry, 'they/thems' and 'xe/xirs.' America under Trump will no longer cater to your delusions. President Trump - bringing SANITY back to America one Executive Order at a time. We're not the biggest fans of governing by executive order, but until Congress can get off its butt and enact legislation banning the horrific practices of the gender cult, Trump's signed orders will have to do. If he never does anything else, this will be his greatest achievement. The madness must stop. https://t.co/IQHqXC1MYi We're sure that Trump will achieve many more victories, but James Woods is correct. It is madness and bringing it to an immediate end is long past due. Finally, we have a president who will take that action. it is vital for the future of Western civilization that we end the WokeMindVirus Transgender bullsh*t. I believe this is the edge of the stage at which reversing the damage is possible. it might even be too late no matter what we do. ☹️ https://t.co/1pXGNuiIfW This writer has written often about how the trans issue is not just a political or cultural disagreement, it is a civilizational struggle. No society or civilization that embraces such insanity can ever survive. We don't believe it's too late, but fixing the damage will take a generation if not longer. That's all the more reason that Trump is right to make this a Day One priority and action for his administration. Goodbye Satan https://t.co/0bdDYS0AUk Don't let the door hit ya'. And don't come back. Ever. We're sure there will be a great deal of screeching from leftist parents who suffer Munchausen by proxy and take it out on their children. Well, guess what? We don't care. Dear woke parents... 👇 pic.twitter.com/cxjtkvNr0F It IS abuse. Nothing more. And these mentally disturbed parents (and the wicked doctors and therapists who enable them) won't be able to get away with it anymore. How did it get to the point, where the president-elect as a part of his first immediate policy has to stop child mutilation. How is this even a thing? 🤔 That's a question that is worthy of discussion. And we're happy to have that discussion. But first things first. Put an end to it. Then we can ask how we got here. Haters will say this is transphobic when in reality it’s simply reinforcing basic science https://t.co/UrUx81T0zC Trump brings science back to government. We've missed having it around. Make America Sane Again https://t.co/iH0bNMyNwZ We've missed having that around too. This is a huge WIN! https://t.co/ikbTL5GXDw YUGE, even. And we've got some bad news for the journos as well, who have been screaming about Trump becoming a dictator. Well, if this is what Trump being a 'Dictator on Day One' means, then we're all for it.Hackers Are Using Malicious Google Chrome Extensions To Steal Your Facebook Data: All Details

As small and Northern rural municipalities levy hefty property-tax increases to cover basic services, the amount of hefty grants they receive from the province each year is also going up. The province announced on Friday it’s hiking the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund by $100 million over the next two years, bringing the total amount to be expended to $600 million by the end of 2026. “We have heard from small, Northern, and rural municipalities that they need more support to meet the financial challenges they face,” Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy, a Toronto-area MPP, said in a news release. Northern municipalities have come to rely on the fund heavily. The Municipality of Shuniah, for example, received nearly $880,000 from the program this year, an amount that wouldn’t cover the amount its spends on social and family services. Shuniah’s amount is expected to rise by just over $100,000 next year, its municipal chief administrator, Paul Greenwood, noted. Though the provincial fund amounts are due to rise in 2025 and 2026, individual municipalities have watched them go down slightly in other years. On Friday, the province claimed the overall amount allocated to municipal programs has spiked. According to a provincial backgrounder, “key provincial support to municipalities grew by over 45 per cent” between 2019 and 2023. “In 2023 alone, the government provided almost $10 billion to Ontario municipalities through key transfers,” the backgrounder said, to help municipalities cope with worsening problems, such as homelessness. Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association president Wendy Landry said the association “has been a long-time advocate for a permanent increase,” to the municipal partnership fund. Landry, who is also Shuniah’s mayor, said small municipalities like hers “greatly rely on this funding.” As rumours continue to swirl about a possible provincial election a year ahead of schedule in 2025, the Doug Ford government has committed to sitting down with municipalities to hold discussions about the partnership fund early next year. “We can work together to guarantee (the) fund meets the needs of small and rural municipalities across Northern Ontario,” Landry said.

On paper, Luigi Mangione had it all: wealth, intellect, athleticism, good looks. But the child of a prominent Maryland family may have spurned it all in a spasm of violence, in a killing that has mesmerized Americans. The 26-year-old was arrested Monday and charged with the murder of Brian Thompson, a health insurance chief executive and father of two who was gunned down in Manhattan last week by someone who, evidence suggests, has endured his own debilitating health crises and grew angry with the privatized US medical system. The cold-blooded killing has laid bare the deep frustration many Americans feel toward the country's labyrinthine health care system: while many have condemned the shooting, others have praised Mangione as a hero. It has also prompted considerable interest in how a young engineer with an Ivy League education could have gone off the rails to commit murder. News of his capture at a Pennsylvania McDonald's triggered an explosion of online activity, with Mangione quickly amassing new followers on social media as citizen sleuths and US media tried to understand who he is. As Americans have looked for clues about a political ideology or potential motive, a photo on his X account (formerly Twitter) includes an X-ray of an apparently injured spine. Mangione lived in Hawaii in 2022 and, according to his former roommate R.J. Martin, suffered from back pain, and was hoping to strengthen his back. After a surfing lesson, Mangione was "in bed for about a week" because of the pain, Martin told CNN. Earlier this year, Martin said, Mangione confirmed he'd had back surgery and sent him photos of the X-rays. Police said the suspect carried a hand-written manifesto of grievances in which he slammed America's "most expensive health care system in the world." "He was writing a lot about his disdain for corporate America and in particular the health care industry," New York police chief detective Joseph Kenny told ABC. According to CNN, a document recovered when Mangione was arrested included the phrase "these parasites had it coming." Meanwhile, memes and jokes proliferated, many riffing on his first name and comparing him to the "Mario Bros." video game character Luigi. Many expressed at least partial sympathy, having had their own harrowing experiences with the US health care system. "Godspeed. Please know that we all hear you," wrote one user on Facebook. Mangione hails from the Baltimore area. His wealthy Italian-American family owns local businesses, including the Hayfields Country Club, according to local outlet the Baltimore Banner, and cousin Nino Mangione is a Maryland state delegate. A standout student, Luigi graduated at the top of his high school class in 2016. A former student who knew Mangione at the elite Gilman School told AFP the suspect struck him as "a normal guy, nice kid." "There was nothing about him that was off, at least from my perception," the person said. Mangione attended the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, where he completed both a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science by 2020, according to a university spokesperson. While at Penn, Mangione co-led a group of 60 undergraduates who collaborated on video game projects, as noted in a now-deleted university webpage. On Instagram Mangione shared snapshots of his travels, and shirtless images of himself flaunting a six-pack. X users have scoured Mangione's posts for potential motives. His header photo includes an X-ray of a spine with bolts attached. Finding a political ideology that fits neatly onto the right-left divide has proved elusive, though he had written a review of Ted Kaczynski's manifesto on online site Goodreads, calling it "prescient." Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber, carried out multiple bombings in the United States from 1978 to 1995, in a campaign he said was aimed at halting the advance of modern society and technology. Mangione has also linked approvingly to posts criticizing secularism as a harmful consequence of Christianity's decline, and retweeted posts on the impact mobile phones and social media have on mental health. ia/abo-mlm/nro

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses major plot points, including the ending for “ Gladiator II ,” currently playing in theaters. All hail Macrinus! In a world of political backstabbing, power and ambition, Denzel Washington’s Macrinus enters the arena in Ridley Scott ’s “ Gladiator II” with troops and guards under a canopy. He reeks of wealth and oozes power. The role has been a favorite of fans and critics, and Washington is earning some serious Oscar buzz. Scott’s sequel picks up 16 years after the original “Gladiator” ends. It tells the story of Lucius ( Paul Mescal ) whose town is attacked by Roman soldiers. The invasion leads to tragedy as Lucius’ wife is killed and he’s captured as a prisoner. Enter Macrinus, a wealthy trader who spots Lucius and buys him for his own. But audiences aren’t quite sure of Macrinus and his motives at first. It’s clear he’s a powerful player in all of this, but whether his intentions are good or bad isn’t immediately clear. Scott and his go-to team of collaborators told Macrinus’ story by planting clues to his true nature. Scott explains the idea behind Macrinus’ past. Washington’s character had been a prisoner of war, taken to Rome and turned into fodder for the arena. Still, “he earned his way out as a good gladiator,” says Scott. The idea was he eventually earned his freedom “maybe by getting a job as a supplier to the armies of Rome.” Macrinus rides under a canopy, and cinematographer John Mathieson says, “He’s remarkable looking. He’s very bling, flamboyant and he’s robed, and he’s obviously not from Rome, but he has done very well. He’s deeply mischievous, treacherous, and you feel that. He is incredibly polite and kind, even to those who owe him money.” Composer Harry Gregson-Williams, who stepped in for Hans Zimmer to score the film’s music, echoed this through his score: “We know we’re kind of attracted to him because he’s kind of a cool character, but he’s a slippery character.” When it came to Macrinus’ musical motif, he relied on the electric baritone violin and electric cello to hint at who he was. “I created this motif that is slippery and slides around.” Thematically, Macrinus’ material was “quite creepy that evolves into something much bolder” to reflect his scheming ways and ambition as he navigates his way through the halls of power in Rome. Production designer Arthur Max, who worked on the first “Gladiator” film, knew Macrinus would need a visual motif. In meeting with his fellow department heads, art was a huge inspiration for Macrinus — in particular Jean-Léon Gérôme — his 1872 Pollice Verso painting and other works by the artist. Max says, “He comes from the polytheistic pagan world of ancient Rome, which he’s a part of, they adopted gods from the animal world. We decided to give him two motifs and distributed those throughout his universe; one was the wolf and the other one was the snake.” The double snake motifs could be seen on the flags his troops were carrying, and the wolf heads could be seen around the curvature of his chariot — all hinting to the true nature of this man. Wealth was also reflected in Washington’s costumes, with rich fabrics draped over his 15 total tunics for every costume change. He collaborated closely with costume designer Janty Yates to build his look. At one point, there was an idea of putting him in a headpiece, but since Scott nor Washington liked the idea, it was quickly nixed. Yates says, “But Denzel did wear the earrings, which was great because that gives him a slightly off-center feel. It was brilliant.” They were clip-on earrings because Washington didn’t have pierced ears. When Macrinus is in the suburban colosseum with the baboons, his outfit is subtle and majestic. Once he goes to Rome, he sits in the royal box alongside the Emperors. Yates used original hand-embroidered drapes. One particular outfit is the green drape which was encrusted in jewels. Yates says, “It was bought in Milan from a man who imports ancient Indian fabrics and embroidery.” He also wore a bit of leopard skin print. Scott says Washington embraced his silk, and the idea of his adjusting his fabrics was his idea. “He chose to do that. That’s Denzel. He’s so inventive. I thought that’s really amusing.” But it also spoke to his character. Makeup artist Jana Carboni didn’t want to get in the way of Washington’s performance. She says, “We decided to go for something simple and straightforward. So the idea was to make him look very groomed and, in a way, vain. He wasn’t too loud because he needed to be chameleon-like and fit in everywhere. Also, we kept it simple because he was going to play with his jewelry.” The only tweak that was made was to his hair. “I said, ‘It’d be lovely if we could bring the silvery-gray out in your hair,’ and he loved the idea.” As Mescal’s Lucius hopes for and fights for a better Rome, Macrinus has other plans: a bloodthirsty quest for revenge. Twin emperors, played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger, stand in his way. “He’s a very sinister mercurial character,” says cinematographer John Mathieson. Scott says that Macrinus always coveted the throne, but the more time he spends around the emperors “the throne is becoming, ultimately, very practical. His plan might have been,’ I will wait until one of the twins dies, I can’t do anything else because otherwise it’d be too obvious, but then things start to present themselves to him as possibility.” Mathieson made sure to capture Macrinus, even when he was in the shadows, lurking. “I always put a ping of light in his eyes, these eyes that are just going through you. I made sure I caught him.” When the twins fall out, Scott says Macrinus has found a window and he seizes it. “I can get rid of one of these.” Yates dressed him in a white jacquard silk draped fabric with gold trim. “I wanted to keep him very elegant, but simple.” She explains, “He had reached the point where he was so close to the emperors, we wanted him to look sort of almost innocent.” Except the irony was that he wasn’t, and he seized that moment and beheads one of them. Yes, Macrinus is the true villain of the film, but it’s up to Lucius to restore order and power to Rome and defeat him. For his last scene, Yates put Macrinus in a majestic peacock blue tunic. Macrinus and Lucius face one another in an epic fight in a river that Max and his team built. It doesn’t end well for Macrinus. Lucius slices off his arm with a sword, and one final swing ends him. Says Scott, “I think he earned the right to die that way. 100 percent. What a bad guy. He still had a little bit of the gladiator in him, and was a good warrior. You see that come out with Paul’s character, he fights dirty.” Scott likens the final fight to an alleyway fight – fighting dirty. That’s what Lucius had to do. ”One of them had to die.”In this interview, Senior Banking Advisor, Retail Banking at Access Bank Plc, Robert Gill, spoke extensively on the anticipated growth in remittances and the transformative impact this will have on Nigeria’s economy. He also spoke on the bank’s innovative strategies for advancing financial inclusion and digital banking, while addressing key developments in the nation’s digital financial landscape. Nume Ekeghe presents excepts: What role has digital innovation played in Access Bank’s retail banking strategy, and how has it impacted customer engagement? Digital innovation is at the heart of everything we do as a bank. With over 60 million customers, our journey over the past 15 to 20 years reflects a significant transformation. In the early days, customers would visit a branch, fill out paper forms, and officially become part of the bank. This was the foundation of financial inclusion, which initially focused on corporates and businesses before expanding through the rapid proliferation of branch-based banking to include the wider population. However, achieving 60 million customers with a paper-based system would have been impossible, or at least very inefficient, we would have needed tens of thousands of branches nationwide. This is where digital innovation came in. Pioneering one of the first mobile apps in the country and introducing USSD banking laid the foundation for our truly digital-first strategy. Today, most customers find us online. They come across us on news platforms, entertainment sites, and social media channels like Instagram, Facebook, and X where they can find out more about what we do and interact with us. From there, they can easily open an account from the comfort of their home, workplace, or anywhere else—simply by dialing #901. It’s that simple. The same applies to our mobile app where you can find out about us online, download the app and open an account and begin a relationship. The days when banks had to urge customers to explore digital channels as an alternative to branch banking are long behind us. Now, digital is no longer an alternate channel, it is the primary one. Branches have become the alternative. Today, more than 90 per cent of transactions occur outside the branch, predominantly on phones—whether feature phones or smartphones. This shift has revolutionized banking from the moment customers discover us to account opening to ongoing services, whether transactional or extending to non-traditional banking products. Digital has redefined customer engagement and continues to shape the future of financial services. What are the strategies put in place to increase the adoption of digital channels by retail customers and how does it enhance financial inclusion? Financial inclusion is central to our mission and a cornerstone of Nigeria’s broader economic objectives, as championed by the Bankers’ Committee and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Historically, Nigeria struggled with financial inclusion, ranking amongst the lowest on the continent. However, we have made remarkable progress in closing that gap through the co-ordinated leadership of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers Committee. According to the Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFInA) reports, which show financial inclusion rates growing from less than 50% in 2008 to 74 per cent in 2023, Nigeria is now amongst the better-ranked countries for financial inclusion, largely driven by innovations in mobile financial services. This is also a continental phenomenon, with account ownership in Sub Saharan Africa more than doubling since 2011. This progress has been achieved through collaboration between banks and fintech’s’, leveraging tools such as USSD technology, mobile banking applications, and agency banking to reach underserved communities. The traditional branch-based banking model, while transformative in its time, is no longer sufficient to meet the needs of modern customers. For someone working in a company, government, or as a trader or small business owner, the time required to visit a branch to open an account or complete transactions is time lost from productive activities or family. Today, customers demand convenience, and digital innovation allows us to meet them where they are. Our network of over 600,000 AccessClosa agents ensures that customers are never far from financial services. While digital tools are critical, personal interaction remains essential for financial inclusion. Our agent network plays a crucial role in bridging this gap. Beyond accessibility, digital tools have significantly reduced the cost of serving customers. Consider the transportation costs and lost time involved in traveling to a branch—time that could be spent trading, working, or attending to other priorities. By bringing services directly to customers through mobile and digital channels, we have transformed the banking experience, ensuring customers are served where and how they prefer, rather than requiring them to adapt to our systems. This approach underscores our commitment to reshaping financial services to genuinely meet customer needs. How has the bank’s digital transformation journey addressed pain points in the retail banking customer experience? One of the key points we frequently emphasise in our team planning sessions is that customers don’t necessarily want to bank or make payments in the traditional sense; what they truly want is to keep their money secure, travel, work, eat, shop, and manage their lives with ease. When they engage with financial services, we must focus on understanding what they are trying to achieve, not just the transactions they need to complete. For example, services like embedded finance or buy-now-pay-later options are great ways to align financial products with everyday needs without thinking about the financial product as an extra step. Instead of going to a branch to apply for a personal loan, a customer can now make an online purchase and pay for it in installments. This approach brings us closer to the customer, providing financial solutions that are seamlessly integrated into their lives. Another critical area we’ve worked on is simplifying the Know Your Customer (KYC) process and reducing the documentation required to open an account. The banking sector in Nigeria has made significant strides in this regard, with the introduction of tiered KYC, allowing individuals to open basic accounts remotely by simply creating a digital wallet. This development has played a pivotal role in advancing financial inclusion. Regarding transactions, we’ve enhanced the customer experience by offering greater flexibility and accessibility. Customers now have multiple ways to pay through cards, mobile access, or peer-to-peer transfers. For example, with our Access More platform, you can make QR payments, order a new debit card, or even request a statement—all instantly. If you need a stamped statement for visa purposes or a loan, there’s no need to visit the branch. We already have your transaction history, turnover, and salary information, allowing us to pre-qualify you for a loan. With just a few clicks on the app, the loan can be in your account within seconds. By removing these pain points and shifting many traditional banking processes from the branch to the digital space, we are not just offering convenience but also ensuring that services are fast, accessible, and available at the customer’s fingertips. This is the future of banking—focused on understanding customer needs, simplifying processes, and providing instant, on-demand services through technology. Can we know some of the digital payment solutions you have and how they have helped retail business growth? Digital payments are a critical driver of economic activity; they are the lifeblood of business success. Without the ability to process payments efficiently, businesses face significant challenges. At Access Bank, we understand this dynamic, which is why, after transitioning into a financial holding company a few years ago, we diversified into multiple verticals, including banking, payments, lending, insurance, and pensions. One of our strategic partnerships has been with Hydrogen, enabling us to better serve merchants nationwide. Hydrogen’s innovative Instant Payment Links allow customers to make payments via links or codes, receiving instant confirmation and value at the point of sale, further enhancing the merchant experience. You’ll likely have seen Hydrogen’s branding on POS terminals, reflecting the success of this collaboration. In Nigeria, most transactions still occur on a person-to-person basis, often seen as individual payments. Through data and analytics, we’ve identified that a significant number of customers, around 7.5 million, are small business owners. We now have the capability to serve these individuals more effectively, providing them not only with financial products but also with non-financial services through our SME team. This includes business seminars on topics like setting up and managing a business, keeping personal and business finances separate, and best practices for growing a company. Payments are now more accessible than ever. Beyond traditional methods, customers can make payments via USSD, mobile apps, or even interact with our chatbot, Tamada, on the banking app. To simplify transactions, we’re pioneering payments through phone numbers, allowing customers who prefer not to remember their account number to simply use a phone number to send payments. This approach is a testament to how digital solutions transform people’s engagement with financial services, making transactions faster, more convenient, and more inclusive. Can you give us some insight into some specific products by the bank, especially women, SMEs and youths? At Access Bank, women are at the heart of everything we do and I’m extremely fortunate that the majority of the leaders in my team are women. Our W Banking initiative has evolved into a thriving community, going beyond just offering financial products to creating a comprehensive ecosystem that supports women in multiple dimensions of their lives. Access W is not just a Nigeria-focused solution; it’s a pan-African proposition, with Access Bank’s presence in numerous countries across the continent. We have recently launched Access W in Botswana, and our mission is to impact women across Africa, not just locally in Nigeria. Our aim is to foster intra-African trade and connect women across the continent with global markets. One of the key offerings under Access W is the W Power loan, which has been in place for over a decade, providing women with preferential rates and terms to fund their businesses. Additionally, our digital lending team provides instant loans accessible via mobile devices, ensuring that women, regardless of the size of their business, can access financing quickly and conveniently. The W-branded debit card helps identify and serve women within our community, and we organize a range of seminars and events tailored to support women in business. We also have partnerships designed to help women learn practical skills, such as driving, and access loans for purchasing their first cars. Our training programs empower women with the tools they need to grow and succeed in their businesses. Just this week, we held our 6 th annual Womenpreneur ‘Pitch a Ton’ event where we celebrated over 100 graduates of the mini MBA programme we run in conjunction with the IFC for women-led small and medium businesses. These businesses are all doing amazing things on the continent, solving problems, creating employment and wealth. At Access Bank, we understand that empowering women leads to broader societal benefits. When we support women, we uplift families and contribute to the overall economic growth. This commitment to women’s economic empowerment is central to our values, and we continue to invest heavily in W Banking. Our youth solutions are also tailored to different life stages. For younger children, we offer Access Solo, an account that transitions from a parent-operated to a child-operated account once they turn 18. This progressive approach ensures that as children grow, they become more financially literate and prepared to manage their own finances. By the time they reach adulthood, they have their own debit cards, mobile apps, and full control over their accounts, empowering them to take charge of their financial future. How do you collaborate with fintechs companies? Some bankers view fintech companies primarily as competitors, but the potential for collaboration far outweighs the competitive angle. Despite the increasing digitalization of the financial sector, most transactions in the market are still conducted in cash, presenting a significant opportunity for partnership. Fintechs, working with banks as part of the overall financial ecosystem, have helped to bridge the financial inclusion divide and increase the velocity of money in the economy. To tap into this potential, we established a dedicated team—the Partnership and Digital Capabilities Team. Their primary role is to forge strategic partnerships with fintech companies, helping them gain better market access. This includes collaborating to provide payment services such as instant payments, leveraging partnerships like the one with Hydrogen to facilitate quick transactions, and even supporting fintechs in issuing payment cards. This approach is central to our strategy and has been a key focus for several years. We are moving beyond the traditional banking partnerships focused on payments, lending, and deposits. We have expanded into more strategic collaborations, such as our partnership with Coronation, which allows our customers to access the stock market and invest in Nigerian equities in real-time via our mobile app. This innovation lowers the barriers to entry for investing, allowing customers to easily view the market and make real-time transactions directly from their mobile phones. This is a part of our broader financial inclusion strategy to provide customers with access to a wider range of financial services beyond traditional deposit products, enabling them to build long-term wealth and contribute to economic growth in the community. What upcoming digital innovations or initiatives will further drive retail business growth? We foresee significant growth in the remittance space, with Nigeria receiving over $20 billion annually in remittances. Digital solutions are driving down the cost of international money transfers, enhancing speed and efficiency. Our partnerships with fintechs and international remittance operators aim to expand financial access, ensuring that more funds flow into the formal economy. What is Access Bank doing in this regard? With presence in over 15 countries, Access Bank is building its proprietary payment route, Access Africa, which connects all our countries of presence facilitating individual and business payments on the continent. We also collaborate with global payment schemes like Visa and Mastercard to facilitate seamless international transfers to over 150 countries in the world. By partnering with fintechs, we broaden access to financial services enabling remittances into mobile wallets, making money transfers more affordable and efficient The reduction in remittance costs will not only benefit the economy but also increase the flow of funds through formal channels. This will drive economic growth and prosperity within the continent. What is the future of remittances, and how is Access Bank preparing for it? We anticipate that remittances will evolve beyond cash transfers to include goods and services. For example, remittances could directly fund education fees, support online food retailers, or pay for medical expenses. This approach ensures that remittances are used for their intended purpose while helping to grow commerce and lower costs.

Michigan , but it wasn't enough to save the job of offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell. The , which also included quarterbacks coach. Tight ends coach Steve Casula will become the interim offensive coordinator for bowl season. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore's comment, via the program: "After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction," said Moore. "This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan Football and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors." It was a challenging year for Michigan in its first season under Moore, who took over for Jim Harbaugh full-time after a breakthrough national championship. Moore filled his old offensive coordinator position with Campbell, who was previously the program's quarterbacks coach in 2023 and an offensive analyst in 2022. Before Michigan, Campbell's play-calling experience consisted of stints at Old Dominion and Division II Alderson Broaddus. The offensive results weren't pretty for Michigan, which also saw seven offensive players get selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, including quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum and wide receiver Roman Wilson. The Wolverines ranked 117th in the country in yards per play — after ranking 24th last season — and didn't score more than 17 points in any of its six games against ranked opponents. Those struggles didn't prevent Michigan from , though the numbers from that game normally wouldn't be an argument for keeping Campbell. Quarterback Davis Warren was 9-for-16 for 62 passing yards and two interceptions, while the run game averaged 4.2 yards on 41 attempts. Before its game-winning field goal, Michigan had scored all of its points on drives of three yards or less. Its touchdown came after an interception deep in Buckeyes territory, while the first field goal was the product of a weak punt and a three-and-out. As for what Michigan will do going forward, it at least has plenty to offer the next offensive coordinator. Thanks to a donation from tech billionaire Larry Ellison, the program was able to . This tape is for L.A., The LAnd, Cal-a-forn-I-A. The West. Kendrick Lamar solidified his place in rap history this summer after he battled Drake for the game’s top spot and this album feels like a victory lap. GNX is named after the 1987 Buick GNX — the souped up version of their Grand National car that’s apparently very rare. According to the Bentonville Buick GMC blog, there were only 547 of these things made and Kendrick confirms that number on his Instagram burner account. You see, because everything he’s been doing has been done with intention. There was a lot of smoke around rumors that he would be dropping a fresh project before the Super Bowl , and you know that old saying, right? Well, it looks like there’s a fire, folks. He’s far from finished and we should probably get used to it. There’s no sense in fighting it or hating on it, just let it be and let the chips fall where they may. The crown now sits firmly in the West. There’s no more Big 3, that era is done. It’s over with. This guy is a maniac, he’s a tyrant. He’s still talking Drake and the rest of the game all over this record. You remember that “ For Pharrell I’ll inherit the beef ” line? He flipped SWV’s “ Use Your Heart ” from 1996 that was produced by The Neptunes and titled it “ heart pt. 6 .” This is a diabolical mastermind that we’re dealing with here, so join me as I tried to pick and rank the 10 Best Lines from Kendrick Lamar’s new album GNX . Song: “peekaboo” This is an honorable mention right here because it’s not a Kendrick line. This rapped by Dody6 and was a line I kept thinking about, so I included it on here. The fact that he made sure to feature underground West Coast cats like Dody6, AzChike , and Peysoh is a pretty big deal. This is a major look for them and they delivered with some of the best features on this record. Dody snapped with that Her Loss double aunt andre, too. Salute. Song: “tv off” Hey, man, sometimes family be on some b.s. It be like that. Song: “gloria” Some feel like the his bitch being his pen is a little corny, but I was feeling the lead up to it because there’s been a lot of conversation about some of lyrical content and approach. Yeah, he’ll maybe come across as preachy or self righteous, but they in the next breath he’ll crash out. This is the dichotomy of man. Song: “heart pt. 6” This SWV flip is madness and then you couple that with these heartfelt lines about TDE’s come up and you have a special song. I felt like Stefon Diggs doing that postgame interview. You know the one. Song: “reincarnated” This dude flipped 2Pac’s “ Made N—az ” and used his flow on the first verse, but this conversation with God in the last verse stops you in your tracks. Here he goes again putting the war that’s inside him on full display. His vulnerability turns some off, yet it’s one of those things that makes an artist generational. Snoop recently gave him credit for bringing L.A.’s gangs together and how important the “Pop Out” concert was. Song: “squabble up” He has the money and the power to off the competition, but the boogeyman enjoys doing the job himself. Song: “man at the garden” He’s still not finished?? This guy is a menace. Song: “hey now” I’m not sure Noah was killing animals aboard his ark, but I haven’t read the bible in a minute. Great line, either way. And of course, we all know how he’s referring to. Song: “squabble up” So, it looks like we finally got the snippet he did at the start of the “Not Like Us” video and it’s essentially a message to the game that the boogeyman is outside and he wants to play. Song: “peekaboo” Calling diamonds boogers and comparing their carats to Kobe’s 81-point game is what this rap thing is all about. Song: “wacced out murals” To be fair to Snoop, he posts damn near everything on his Instagram account. But him waking up and being confused about hearing his voice on Drake’s diss song and then reposting it was a little head-scratching to say the least. The West Coast legend has been adamant about wanting to stay neutral throughout this whole ordeal, so maybe he didn’t really mean anything by it? Either way, Kendrick’s disappointed in his OG. Let’s hope they can hash this out. Song: “hey now” This is one of the best lines on one of the album’s best songs, and he’s still talking to Drake who some thought was too big to fail. Song: “dodger blue” That line about his chain being so dripped in ice that it resembles the glare on the camera lenses used by some of the game’s greatest directors is special. Song: “wacced out murals” Jigga tapping Dot to headline the Super Bowl has made everyone loose their minds, and perhaps there were some politics happening behind the scenes that made Wayne feel like he and Cash Money were going to get the nod in their hometown, but I’m not really sure how you can not understand this decision. Maybe Weezy gets the call if one of the most important rap battles since Jay-Z vs. Nas didn’t pop off. Song: “man at the garden” The crown sits in the West. We better get used to it. Now we sit back and see who tries to come for it.Should you buy Nvidia stock before 2025? The evidence is piling up, and it says thisSuspended soccer coach Bev Priestman has broken her silence, saying she hopes something positive comes out of the ongoing Canadian drone-spying scandal. “I hope out of a really tough situation, this is a turning point for our game,” she wrote in an Instagram post via her verified account. “There has been a standard and precedent set now, irrespective of gender, tournament or associated revenues that will hopefully clean up our game.” She did not address her role in the affair in the six-paragraph post. Priestman, assistant coach Jasmine Mander and analyst Joey Lombardi are all serving one-year FIFA bans for their role in the scandal, which saw the Canada women’s team use a drone to spy on two New Zealand training sessions at the Olympics. Canada Soccer says the three won’t be back in the wake of the recent independent report into the scandal. Lombardi is already gone, having resigned his position after the Olympics. “The findings of the independent investigator reveal that the incident itself was a symptom of a difficult and unacceptable past culture within the national teams,” Canada Soccer chief executive officer and general secretary Kevin Blue and president and board chair Peter Augruso said in a statement when the report was released earlier this month. Canada Soccer continues to investigate the roots of the spying scandal and has initiated a disciplinary process against former men’s and women’s coach John Herdman, currently coach of Toronto FC. The governing body has said it “has initiated a proceeding with respect to Mr. Herdman under its Disciplinary Code.” Herdman did not speak to Sonia Regenbogen, who wrote the report. Priestman signed a new contract in January that runs through the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The 38-year-old Priestman took over the Canadian women on Nov. 1, 2020, and was initially appointed “through the next quadrennial.” She had been working on a rolling contract — until the new deal. “It has and will continue to take some time to process, heal, find the right words and step back into a public setting but I felt I should say something irrespective of ongoing circumstances,” Priestman wrote. In addition to the suspensions, FIFA docked the Canadian women six points in the group stage at the Olympics and fined Canada Soccer 200,000 Swiss francs ($312,815). Despite that, defending champion Canada still managed to make the knockout round before losing a penalty shootout to Germany in the quarterfinals. “I know that amazing group was ready to reach the top again this summer, but in many ways what they did was even more special under such difficult circumstances,” Priestman wrote. She also thanked those who had reached out to her. “You continue to help me through some dark days,” she said. Canadian under-20 coach Cindy Tye has been named interim coach for the sixth-ranked Canadians’ upcoming friendlies in Spain against Iceland and South Korea.

The NFL's security division is warning players to be aware of professional burglars targeting the homes of pro athletes. The Athletic reported Thursday that the NFL sent a memo to teams that outlines the threat. "The homes of professional athletes across multiple sports leagues have become increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups," read the memo, which was obtained by The Athletic. "Law enforcement officials have noted these groups appear to exploit team schedules to target athletes' homes on game days." NBC News reported Wednesday that law enforcement is working to figure out whether an international crime syndicate is involved. The Athletic reported that the memo includes tips for home security and also gives recommendations about the use of social media, such as not posting photos of items that would attract thieves. Players also learned via the memo how homes are targeted and how burglars enter. Mahomes hasn't said much about the burglary, other than to call it "disappointing" and "frustrating." "I can't get into too many of the details because the investigation is still ongoing," he said. "But obviously something that you don't want to happen to really anybody, but obviously yourself." It's not clear what was stolen from Mahomes' home in Belton, Mo., during the Oct. 6 incident. But Kelce apparently lost $20,000 in cash in the burglary at his home in Leawood, Kan., the following day when the Chiefs played the New Orleans Saints on "Monday Night Football," according to a police report. The burglary at the home of Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis in River Hills, Wis., occurred Nov. 2 during the Bucks' home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He said the perpetrators "took most of my prized possessions" and is offering a reward for the return of his property. "Any info that leads to the return of any of my belongings will be rewarded handsomely," Portis said. "Let me know, thank you." --Field Level Media

Ole Miss WR Tre Harris injured during loss to FloridaSINGAPORE: In November, shocking news broke that the police were investigating teenage students from the Singapore Sports School for generating and circulating deepfake nude photos of their female schoolmates. Later that month, five ministers in Singapore and over 100 public servants across 31 government agencies received extortionary emails , demanding cryptocurrency payment in return for not publishing doctored images of them in compromising positions. These are Singapore’s latest cases of artificial intelligence (AI)-created deepfake sexual content – they will certainly not be the last, not here, not globally. In 2017, a Reddit thread offering fake videos of “Taylor Swift” having sex amassed 90,000 subscribers before being taken down eight weeks later. Last year in a small Spanish town, more than 20 young girls found their AI-generated nude photos circulating, created by teen boys accessing innocent photos off social media. AI may be trumpeted as the next big revolution, but the threat it poses is deeply nefarious. SINGAPORE TAKES ACTION Even before the Sports School incident, authorities in Singapore were girding against this new wave of online assault, with legislation passed or proposed along three prongs. The first is to regulate platforms where online content is accessed. The Broadcasting Act was amended in 2023, allowing the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) to direct social media services – the gatekeepers of our cyber world – to block or remove egregious content within specified timelines and direct them to adhere to an online Code of Practice. Second, crimes in the analogue world but with a digital element can now be more effectively targeted, prevented and prosecuted. The Online Criminal Harms Act passed last year empowers authorities to issue directions to online service providers to restrict Singapore users’ exposure to online criminal content and activity. These include directions to prevent offending content from reaching, and restrict offending accounts from interacting with, persons in Singapore. WHAT THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IS DOING But these would still not be a complete solution because the proliferation of deepfakes is a borderless problem. The international community needs to build consensus and cooperation on adopting and enforcing appropriate laws – to stem both the creation and spread of such content. Other nations have come at the problem from different angles. Australia has arguably the most developed governmental response to the online scourge, with an e-safety commission that was first established to tackle cyber harm against children. It passed a law on Nov 28 to ban children from social media until their 16th birthdays – the world’s first such legislation. While politically popular, a complete ban will be hard to enforce: It ignores that children today are digital natives. Virtual Private Network (VPN) access is an easy workaround. Bubble-wrapping kids is not the answer to developing resilient and discerning adults. The United Kingdom recently proposed measures to stop harmful deepfakes being created in the first place. For example, developers of AI models can apply filters to remove certain types of data from their training data sets and to prevent output with harmful content. A model can also be trained to reject prompt requests to create malicious or harmful deepfakes. These proposals pose their own challenges, including enforcement against rogue developers. China already has expansive rules requiring that manipulated material bear digital signatures or watermarks – while a potentially useful tool to help users identify AI-generated content, it offers cold comfort where pornographic deepfake content is circulated. BROADER IMPACT OF ONLINE HARMS Disturbingly, studies suggest that online harms are becoming increasingly normalised, with users thinking they are par for the course. In 2023, a survey by local non-profit SG Her Empowerment found that 20 per cent of respondents reported being “unaffected” because online harms were a “normal part of life”, while 66 per cent have taken to self-censorship. Instead of fighting the playground bully, people are staying away from the sandpit, and not understanding the harm being inflicted. If the internet brings with it the promise of equality through education and engagement, we are stumbling in our march of progress because of threats in cyberspace. And this is before we start to count the cost in mental health terms suffered by victims who find deepfake videos of themselves, no matter how speedily removed. From a gender perspective, the story is even bleaker. It is estimated that 95 per cent of deepfake porn is of women. Women are being disproportionately targeted online, potentially setting back progress made in gender equality. LAW ENFORCEMENT CAN ONLY GO SO FAR Law enforcement, by definition, comes in after the offending action – and the harm – has occurred. Enforcement is tough – creators of harmful content may be out of the territorial reach of our authorities and enjoy the anonymity the internet facilitates. Prevention is obviously even more challenging. What can individuals and the community do? First, the big DON’T – never share an offensive post even if it is to denounce it. Every repost is a fresh assault on the victim. Second, as a community we need to signal what are appropriate behaviours. The teenagers who created the deepfake nudes may well consider it a mere lark, without a real appreciation of the enormity of the harm. It is not enough to say “boys will be boys” – that simply avoids accountability. We need to have more conversations and agree, as a community, the boundaries of respectful conduct towards one another. Just as importantly, we need to think about what restorative justice would look like here. What kind of corrective training would be effective for perpetrators? Finally, victims should not be afraid to call out the perpetrator. Where a crime has been committed, report it to the authorities. If you know someone who has been the target, encourage them to take action. Survivors should not feel embarrassed; it is important that they take back control. While it looks like AI is here to stay, the true measure of society's progress is not in technology, but how we treat each other. Let's educate ourselves and act decisively before more victims become statistics in this alarming trend. On Nov. 21, shares of CRISPR Therapeutics ( CRSP 3.44% ) were down 47% from a peak they reached in March. This might be a little surprising to folks who have been following this developer of gene therapies. After all, it's been less than a year since regulators in the U.S. and E.U. approved its first therapy, Casgevy, to treat two blood-based disorders. Casgevy's initial launch hasn't been as exciting as investors and its partner, Vertex Pharmaceuticals ( VRTX 0.13% ) , had hoped. Less than a year into the launch, though, it's still too early to turn our backs on this innovative drugmaker. After all, in addition to Casgevy, it has five other therapy candidates in clinical-stage testing. To see if adding some shares to your portfolio now makes sense, let's look at why the stock's been beaten down, and what could lift it back up. Why CRISPR Therapeutics stock is down The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Casgevy for the treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD) last December. In January the agency followed up with approval to treat transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia (TDT). Across the Atlantic, European regulators approved Casgevy to treat both SCD and TDT in February. Despite regulatory approvals, the launch is progressing more slowly than investors had expected. CRISPR Therapeutics wisely partnered with Vertex Pharmaceuticals to develop and market Casgevy, but Vertex is having a hard time getting it off the ground. Despite earning approval in late 2023, Vertex didn't record its first sale of Casgevy until the third quarter. Sales have been slow because it's a complicated therapy made in single batches from a patient's stem cells. Once reinfused, the CRISPR-altered stem cells should produce functioning hemoglobin, so SCD and TDT patients no longer need regular blood transfusions. Unfortunately, reinfused Casgevy cells can't gain a foothold unless patients first deplete their immune systems with a dangerous conditioning regimen. Recently, a patient with SCD died during a gene-therapy trial run by Beam Therapeutics . Physicians running the study didn't fault Beam's candidate for the volunteer's death; they blamed a conditioning regimen containing busulfan. Busulfan is also used to condition patients for Casgevy. Reasons to buy CRISPR Therapeutics stock right now A lack of treatment options could work in Casgevy's favor. Last year, the European Medicines Agency revoked conditional approval for an SCD drug from Novartis called Adakveo, after it failed to outperform a placebo in a confirmatory trial. And in September, Pfizer pulled Oxbryta, a daily tablet approved to treat SCD patients, from the market after it failed a postmarketing study. At the end of September, Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics had infused just one patient with Casgevy, but more are on the way. As of mid-October, authorized treatment centers had already collected stem cells from 40 patients. With a list price of $2.2 million, reaching tiny slivers of the SCD and TDT populations could drive annual sales above $1 billion. Five candidates in clinical-stage testing mean Casgevy probably won't be the last FDA-approved therapy to emerge from CRISPR Therapeutics' pipeline. At the upcoming American Society of Hematology meeting in December, the company will present phase 1 trial results for CTX112, an experimental blood-cancer treatment that could be next to reach the commercial stage. We already know CTX112 shrank tumors for six out of nine advanced-stage lymphoma patients. Four of them achieved complete remission. These results would be impressive for a population of relatively healthy patients who just received their first cancer diagnosis, but this group was heavily pretreated. A buy now? With a lack of Casgevy revenue to date, CRISPR Therapeutics is still losing money. Thanks to its partnership with Vertex, though, the losses are manageable. It came up short by just $85.9 million during the third quarter. The company finished September with $1.9 billion in cash. A big cash pile gives CRISPR Therapeutics a long runway to ramp up sales of Casgevy. It also gives CTX112 and the rest of the pipeline time to shine before the company needs to raise capital with a dilutive secondary offering. CRISPR Therapeutics has a $3.9 billion market cap at recent prices, but the stock is less expensive than it looks on the surface. With a big cash cushion and a lack of debt, its enterprise value is just $2.1 billion at recent prices. That's not an unreasonable price to pay for a commercial-stage drugmaker with a handful of new candidates in clinical trials. The stock valuation isn't entirely unreasonable, but it's still high enough to make it a very risky investment. If Casgevy sales don't ramp up soon, or the clinical-stage pipeline falters, investors who buy at recent prices could suffer heavy losses. Unless you have a very high risk tolerance, it's best to keep your distance from CRISPR Therapeutics stock. While the price has come under pressure in recent weeks, most analysts agree that the precious metal will stay at lofty levels for some time to come. In light of this, it could be a good idea to have some exposure to gold in your portfolio. But which ASX 200 gold share could be in the buy zone now? Let's take a look at one that Goldman Sachs is bullish on and is tipping as a buy. Which ASX 200 gold share? The gold miner that Goldman is bullish on is ( ). Its shares rocketed on Monday after ( ) by ( ) in a $5 billion deal. Given that Gold Road owns a ~17% stake in De Grey Mining, it stands to benefit from this transaction and any potential competing offers. In response to the news, Goldman said: If the NST-DEG transaction completes (or attracts further competing proposals) we would see this as a positive for Gold Road Resources which own ~17.3% of DEG, with the implied acquisition price above our prior proportional NAV and potentially adding ~A$0.8bn to GOR's already net cash balance sheet (at current valuations should GOR sell their DEG stake or resulting NST shares where NST/DEG noted that GOR have historically been supportive of DEG, and that they are aware of the transaction with a decision to support the proposed acquisition up to GOR). It also feels that this news could be the catalyst for a re-rating for the ASX 200 gold share, which it notes trades at a discount to peers. It said: We note GOR also hold neighbouring leases to Hemi which may become attractive future development options at the project. Furthermore, with the possible sale of the DEG stake, we see potential support for GOR to re-rate on its own fundamentals, with the stock currently trading at a significant discount to peers at (~3.5x EV/EBITDA, ~1x NAV, and ~US$1,870/oz LT gold; peer average 5.7x/1.2x/~US$2,130/oz respectively), where closing half this gap would add >10-20% to valuation. Time to buy According to the note, the broker has retained its buy rating on the ASX 200 gold share with an improved price target of $2.35. Based on its current share price of $2.04, this implies potential upside of over 15% for investors over the next 12 months.

On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Lightning faced a club they met in a recent Stanley Cup Final when they played against the Dallas Stars. They get a chance to do so again to start Thanksgiving week when the Lightning play host the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night. While Tampa Bay did get past the Stars to win the title in 2020, coach Jon Cooper's team was unable to fight through injuries in the 2022 Final that slipped away to the Avalanche in six games. Offensive spark plug Brayden Point missed most all of that postseason. The 13th-year Lightning coach is combatting new enemies these days. "One team tried to make six passes and put the puck in the net and turned it over, and the other team made two passes and threw it in the net," Cooper said after Saturday's 4-2 home loss, while comparing his team to the Stars. "One team waited for the other team to make a mistake, they did, and that team capitalized on it. That was it. "We blinked first and we lost." The Lightning's Anthony Cirelli scored twice and extended his goal streak to five games, but Dallas forward Matt Duchene broke a 2-2 tie in the third period and Roope Hintz scored 58 seconds later to sink the Lightning and drop them to 3-4-2 in November. Cooper's frustrations in his group's pass-first play have been noted, but they seemed to reach a boiling point after a second straight setback. "It's almost like the goals don't count unless they make the highlight reel," Cooper said. "We haven't quite figured out that if the puck just crosses the goal line in between the pipes, it counts. It doesn't have to be an all-world play." As they get healthier, the Avalanche demonstrated Saturday against the defending Stanley Cup champions that they have no problem scoring. Mikko Rantanen notched a goal and three assists as Colorado powered past the Florida Panthers in a 7-4 victory. Wingers Valeri Nichushkin (suspension) and Jonathan Drouin (upper-body injury) were playing their fourth games since returning from season-long absences and had their best showings so far. A power forward, Nichushkin notched a goal and two assists, while the slick Drouin scored twice, the first tallies for each this season. Drouin was injured six weeks ago on opening night while playing left wing on the top line against the Vegas Golden Knights and missed 16 games. He said he and his teammates followed the lead of the champion Panthers. "I thought we played well after giving up that first goal," Drouin said. "We tried to play a little how they do: Put the puck in deep, try to make them come 200 feet to our net. I don't think we made many mistakes in that game." The Avalanche are on a three-game winning streak and are 7-3-0 this month. That surge has them in fourth place in the Central Division behind the first-place Winnipeg Jets, Minnesota Wild and Stars, respectively. Colorado turned defense into offense in the win. "We shut down the rush attack and that is important to get above them because they are a dangerous rush team," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. "They push north hard. For most of the game, we did a real good job of that. Our defensive play led to good offense." This article first appeared on Field Level Media and was syndicated with permission.

NoneThe increase in consumer loans and rising mortgage defaults are concerns for the domestic tourism market through next year, meaning that short-term promotions such as those for festivals and events might not help, according to tourism operators. In its third-quarter report, the National Economic and Social Development Council issued a warning about the increase in personal loans, while mortgage defaults on loans of less than 3 million baht indicate sluggish household income. Udom Srimahachota, vice-president of the Thai Hotels Association's western chapter, said the economic uncertainty left many Thai tourists, particularly the mass market, with little budget for travel and leisure activities. Domestic tourists tend to travel less and restrict their budget to focus only on necessities, such as hotels and transport, spending less on shopping. Meanwhile, consumers in the upper-market have opted for destinations overseas during the winter months, heading to Japan, Europe and China, which granted Thais visa-free entry. He said some Chinese trips only cost around 20,000 baht per package, competing with popular domestic destinations, such as Pattaya and Hua Hin. As a hotel operator in Hua Hin, Mr Udom noticed that hotels in the area had gained only a few domestic bookings recently, as many Thais seek cooler climes in the north. Mr Udom said the government's initiative to promote events throughout the year has not fully enhanced the domestic market as people are still concerned about spending and are choosing to travel only during certain periods. He said the government should prioritise economic stimulus and help people increase their income with effective financial measures, such as debt restructuring and interest rate reduction, rather than distributing 10,000-baht cash handouts. Kantapong Thananerngroth, president of Thai Tourism Promotion Association, said the government's three-year suspension of interest payments for mortgage, vehicle loans, and small and medium enterprises as a part of its economic stimulus should at least alleviate sluggish domestic tourism over the coming months. He said Thai tourists would still allocate some of their budget for domestic trips despite the economic concerns. During the Loy Krathong festival earlier this month, hotels located near related events were fully booked, especially high-end properties. With more intense competition in the tourism sector, the government should plan and promote events next year in advance, while formulating efficient income distribution for local operators and communities, said Mr Kantapong.TULSA, Okla. , Dec. 2, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- ONE Gas, Inc. The UK must become less dependent on China for critical minerals, an influential thinktank has concluded before a government strategy decision in the spring. In a report on rare earth minerals, which are essential components for hi-tech products from mobile phones to missiles, Labour Together said ministers should “de-risk” supply chains and reduce reliance on China by building partnerships with other countries. The report said China’s dominance in critical mineral supply chains created “vulnerability” and the UK was at greater risk of being singled out after Brexit. Amid escalating trade tensions with the US before Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, China banned shipments of antimony, gallium and germanium to the country earlier this month. The UK government has said it will produce a new strategy on critical minerals in the spring. Labour Together said this should be closely informed by the government’s industrial strategy, also due in the spring, to determine which critical minerals and stages of the supply chain the UK will be most reliant on in the future. Critical minerals are essential for the green transition. Data suggests China extracts about 70% of the world’s rare earth metal ore, dominates the processing and refining of it and uses it to manufacture 90% of the global supply of neodymium magnets, the magnet most commonly used in wind turbines. The report also said it was important for China to be “engaged where possible, eg on mining standards, rather than treated as an adversary”. A paper by the Royal United Services Institute thinktank in October said the UK should work with China on improving environmental and labour practices in mining and engage with Chinese companies operating in countries eligible for international aid. Labour Together said the government should improve the coordination of cross-Whitehall work on critical minerals, work more closely with the EU, promote responsible mining standards internationally and lead a campaign to drive investment. The Conservative party published a critical minerals strategy in 2022, which the foreign affairs committee said was “too broad and does not convey the sense of urgency”. Alicia Kearns, the Tory committee chair at the time, said that for three decades governments had been “asleep at the wheel”. Labour Together described the Tory approach as “too slow, too general and given too little support”. Felix Cazalet, a policy fellow at the thinktank and author of the report, said: “The new government should be more alert than the last to risks, including from the concentration of production in countries like China, while taking a pragmatic and targeted approach in the new strategy. “This should focus on the key things that matter for the UK, and include working more closely with international partners such as the EU to increase responsible investment in resilient supply. The new strategy is an opportunity to secure the materials we need for the UK’s growth, security and green ambitions.” Ruby Osman, a China policy adviser at the Tony Blair Institute, said ministers needed to prepare for disruption if the critical mineral export restrictions targeted at the US were extended to the UK. “When it comes to China, our biggest problem has been timing. China has been building its remarkable market dominance for decades – the UK only released its first critical mineral strategy in 2022,” Osman said. “Diversification is, rightly, likely to be at the heart of Labour’s new strategy. But the UK’s strategy also needs to be realistic – we can’t ignore quite how dominant China is at every step of these supply chains. Even if it wanted to, the UK is never going to be able to cut China out entirely, and that means we’re going to need some considered engagement.” In 2010, China introduced an export ban on rare earth elements to Japan after a dispute. The clampdown lasted only two months but led Japan to diversify its supply chains and become less dependent on China.Medicines for Cubahaha777 fun

Sebastian Zapeta, 33, who federal immigration officials said is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the US illegally, was arraigned in Brooklyn criminal court. He appeared briefly before a judge and wore a white jumpsuit over a weathered black hooded sweatshirt. He did not speak. He will remain jailed ahead of his next court date on Friday. The apparently random attack occurred on Sunday morning on a stationary F train at the Coney Island station in Brooklyn. Police said on Tuesday that identification of the victim was still “pending at this time”. Authorities say Zapeta approached the woman, who was sitting motionless in the train car and may have been sleeping, and used a lighter to set her clothing on fire. The woman quickly became engulfed in flames, while the suspect then sat at a bench on the subway platform and watched, according to police. Video posted to social media appeared to show the woman standing inside the train ablaze as some people look on from the platform, and at least one officer walks by. NYPD chief of transit Joseph Gulotta said that several officers had responded to the fire and one stayed to keep the crime scene “the way it’s supposed to be” while the others went to get fire extinguishers and transit workers. They were eventually able to douse the fire, but “unfortunately, it was too late”, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said — the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. During Zapeta’s court hearing on Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Ari Rottenberg said Zapeta at one point fanned the flames on the woman using his shirt. He said a 911 call from a subway rider helped identify Zapeta. Mr Rottenberg added that under interrogation Zapeta claimed he did not know what happened, noting that he consumes alcohol. But he alleged that Zapeta identified himself to interrogators in images related to the attack. Zapeta was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon while riding a train on the same subway line after police got a tip from some teenagers who recognised him from images circulated by the police. A Brooklyn address for Zapeta released by police matches a shelter that provides housing and substance abuse support. The shelter did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Federal immigration officials said Zapeta had been previously deported in 2018 but at some point reentered the US illegally. The crime — and the graphic video of it that ricocheted across social media — deepened a growing sense of unease among some New Yorkers about the safety of the subway system in a city where many residents take the subway multiple times each day.

Voice cloning is an emerging technology powered by artificial intelligence and it's raising alarms about its potential misuse. Earlier this year, New Hampshire voters experienced this firsthand when a deepfake mimicking President Joe Biden’s voice urged them to skip the polls ahead of the primary. The deepfake likely needed only several seconds of the president's voice to create the clone. According to multiple AI voice cloning models, about 10 seconds of an actual voice is all that is needed to recreate it. And that can easily come from a phone call or a video from social media. "A person's voice is really probably not that information-dense. It's not as unique as you may think," James Betker, a technical staff member at OpenAI, told Scripps News. Betker developed TortoiseTTS, an open-source voice cloning model. "It's actually very easy to model, very easy to learn, the distribution of all human voices from a fairly small amount of data," Betker added. How AI voice cloning works AI models have been trained on vast amounts of data, learning to recognize human speech. Programs analyze the data and train repeatedly, learning characteristics such as rhythm, stress, pitch and tone. "It can look at 10 seconds of someone speaking and it has stored enough information about how humans speak with that kind of prosody and pitch. Enough information about how people speak with their processing pitch and its weights that it can just continue on," Betker said. Imagine a trained AI model as a teacher, and the person cloning the voice to be a student. When a student asks to create a cloned voice, it starts off as white noise. The teacher scores how close the student is to sounding correct. The student tries again and again based on these scores until the student produces something close to what the teacher wants. While this explanation is extremely simplified, the concept of generating a cloned voice is based on bit-by-bit, based on probability distributions. "I think, at its core, it's pretty simple," Betker said. "I think the analogy of just continuing with what you're given will take you pretty far here." There are currently some AI models that claim to only need two seconds of samples. While the results are not convincing yet, Betker says future models will need even fewer voice samples to create a convincing clone.Angela Merkel recounts being the first and only in new memoir

AVS Global strengthens Asia-Pacific operations through new Sri Lanka officeTV star Charlotte Crosby said she has tightened security around her home with 24-hour monitored CCTV and patrol dogs, days after masked thieves carrying a machete attempted to rob her home. The former Geordie Shore star, who is nearly eight months pregnant, thanked a security company “for all the hard work this week” after adding the protections to her home. “Trebling our security measures, worth every penny to feel safe again in my own home,” the 34-year-old said in a post to her Instagram story. “Scumbags are gunna get a big shock the next time they even step foot on any perimeter of my land.” It comes after her fiance, Jake Ankers, said on social media that a group of men carrying a machete entered their home on Thursday evening while they were in the house with their two-year-old daughter. The businessman said one of the four men “had a red balaclava on” and was carrying the weapon at the top of the stairs. Durham Constabulary were alerted at 7pm on Thursday to reports of an aggravated burglary in Houghton-le-Spring, a town in the Sunderland area. A spokeswoman for the force said: “Officers attended the area, however the suspects left the scene before their arrival. “Nobody was injured in the incident and no items are believed to have been taken.” She added that an investigation is under way and anyone with information is asked to contact police. After the incident, Crosby was admitted to hospital after experiencing “serious pains” in her stomach, but confirmed her baby is “all fine”. Ankers appeared with the reality star on BBC Three reality show Charlotte In Sunderland. Crosby is best known for appearing in the MTV reality series Geordie Shore and winning the 12th series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2013. She and Ankers got engaged in October 2023 after she gave birth to their first child in 2022.

Lahore: Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan had agreed to change the protest location from D-chowk to a venue on the outskirts of Islamabad, but his wife Bushra Bibi did not accept the proposal, a minister said on Saturday. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on November 24 called for a sit-in protest with party workers crossing barricades and making their way to Islamabad where four people died and over 50 were injured in a midnight crackdown. However, PTI claimed “hundreds” were killed in the violent clashes with security personnel. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif in a conversation with the media in Sialkot said the government offered PTI several alternative protest locations and while Khan, 72, agreed to the proposal, Bibi insisted on going to D-Chowk, leading to the chaotic situation. He said that while PTI’s crowd size “was good, just like anyone familiar with politics would muster, Bushra Bibi, unfamiliar with such a massive gathering, reportedly expressed concern, saying, ‘Who will go there now’, and insisted on continuing the march towards D-Chowk”. “What happened later, she fled from the scene, escaping with Gandapur,” the minister claimed. Asif, criticising PTI leadership, said the party leaders fled the scene when confronted with genuine resistance, The Express Tribune reported. He compared their retreat to a lack of resolve and said such behaviour was unprecedented in any war or movement. Asif said that Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s vehicle was also hit by bricks as he fled the scene with Bibi. He mentioned the leaders only managed to escape and resurfaced in Mansehra. Addressing the deaths reported during the protests, Asif said that while PTI leaders provided conflicting reports about the number of fatalities, with Sardar Latif Khosa reporting 278 deaths, the actual figure was in single digits. Rangers and police personnel were martyred and hundreds were injured because of the violence incited by Khan’s supporters, the minister claimed. He praised the security forces for successfully preventing what he described as the third attack on the federal government. He said there was a lack of evidence to support claims of mass killings and said no videos of funerals or statements from the families of the deceased emerged, nor had there been any concrete proof of widespread bloodshed. Separately, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar said an anti-riot force was being raised to combat such situations. The minister regretted the PTI was resorting to a false narrative of dead bodies to cover up the embarrassment of fleeing from the protest site. Criticising the PTI for airing old and AI-generated images on social media, Tarar said it was the violent protesters who used different weapons against the security personnel and inflicted damage on public property. Khan’s party on Wednesday formally suspended for the time being its protest in Islamabad and blamed the midnight crackdown by the authorities. Amid concerns about the whereabouts of Bibi and Gandapur – who were leading the march to Islamabad – the party said they were at Mansehra town, near Abbottabad, of the northwestern province. The midnight crackdown forced Khan’s supporters to evacuate the D-Chowk and its adjacent main business district of the capital ending their protest, which his party described as a “massacre” under the “fascist military regime” even as police sources said about 450 protestors were arrested in the crackdown.Israel, Lebanon agree to ceasefireIan Schieffelin, Clemson topple Penn State to win Sunshine Slam

NoneIndia’s climate crisis is not a distant threat — it’s a stark reality impacting millions across the country. That said, it is the marginalised — farmers, low-income communities, women, and the displaced — who often bear a disproportionate burden. In a nation where 65% of the population relies on agriculture, every degree of rising temperature affects livelihoods. India’s climate crisis demands immediate, bold action. While the government, along with corporates and civil society organisations, is working to address this challenge, the scale of the problem requires a multi-dimensional approach to narrow the gap between solutions and response. Empowering grassroots movements, channelling resources to often overlooked segments, and framing policies and on-ground initiatives are at the core of accelerating climate solutions. By providing flexible, long-term funding, and amplifying the voices on these issues, philanthropy can be the force behind building more resilient and sustainable communities. To truly unlock its potential in advancing India’s climate goals, philanthropy must focus on key strategic areas that can drive community resilience. Climate innovation : Investing in technological, policy, and social innovations is essential to building a climate-resilient India. Whether it’s exploring new renewable energy technologies or developing adaptive agricultural practices, these investments can boost the required groundwork. Effective climate action requires policies that not only set ambitious targets but also create pathways for innovation, accountability, and collaboration with stakeholders. Scaling grassroots solutions : Philanthropic funding can enable proven community-led models to achieve broader national impact. This helps to foster resilience from the ground up, ensuring that local success translates into broader acceptance. Empowering civil society : By investing in civil society organisations, we can ensure that opinions from communities directly affected by the climate crisis are heard at national and global forums. Democratic decentralisation is key to developing sustainable and equitable solutions, both for and by the community. Empowering women as change agents : As primary caregivers and often the first responders in households, women possess unique insights into managing natural resources. By supporting capacity-building initiatives, philanthropy can harness women’s unique perspective and leadership for climate resilience. Women-led programmes can facilitate platforms that ensure their voices are integral to climate action. Closing the funding gap : The India Philanthropy Report 2024 highlights a critical need — only a small fraction (0.5%) is directed towards climate initiatives, covering only 10% of India’s climate financing needs. Philanthropy has the power to direct resources to these often-overlooked segments, where attention may be limited. Addressing this gap is more than an opportunity, it is a responsibility to ensure that vulnerable communities are not left behind. India’s philanthropic sector has already planted the seeds of change through various initiatives, such as climate collaboratives or mainstreaming local voices into the climate conversation. These demonstrate the sector’s potential to create a meaningful impact. For example, organisations such as PRADAN cultivate resilience through natural farming and nature-based solutions, empowering communities amid climate uncertainties. Climate RISE Alliance’s compendium, Interwoven Futures highlights CSO-led climate efforts in India. Platforms such as Giving Pi are connecting donors with projects that mitigate environmental impacts, showcasing how technology can enhance philanthropic efforts toward climate action. Similarly, numerous on-ground implementing organisations are actively collaborating with governments and corporates to strengthen climate resilience. To cite a recent example, the mangrove plantation and restoration efforts in coastal Odisha played a vital role in mitigating the damage from Cyclone Dana. Many initiatives are focusing on promoting traditional knowledge, which often holds valuable insights for addressing climate change. Philanthropy has the power to align with governments, NGOs, the private sector, and civil society, allowing the good work happening in silos to become a unified force. Such partnerships pool resources, foster transparency, and minimise duplication. As the climate crisis intensifies, real impact demands a focused and strategic approach. Philanthropy can provide the flexibility needed to act on climate goals. Infinix Empowers Gamers as Official Gaming Phone for 2024 PMGCTORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Donald Trump that Americans would also suffer if the president-elect follows through on a plan to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products , a Canadian minister who attended their recent dinner said Monday. Trump threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if they don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders with the United States. He said on social media last week that he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders. Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, whose responsibilities include border security, attended a dinner with Trump and Trudeau at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club on Friday. Trudeau requested the meeting in a bid to avoid the tariffs by convincing Trump that the northern border is nothing like the U.S. southern border with Mexico . "The prime minister of course spoke about the importance of protecting the Canadian economy and Canadian workers from tariffs, but we also discussed with our American friends the negative impact that those tariffs could have on their economy, on affordability in the United States as well," LeBlanc said in Parliament. If Trump makes good on his threat to slap 25% tariffs on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, the price increases that could follow will collide with his campaign promise to give American families a break from inflation. Economists say companies would have little choice but to pass along the added costs, dramatically raising prices for food, clothing, automobiles, alcohol and other goods. The Produce Distributors Association, a Washington trade group, said last week that tariffs will raise prices for fresh fruit and vegetables and hurt U.S. farmers when the countries retaliate. Canada is already examining possible retaliatory tariffs on certain items from the U.S. should Trump follow through on the threat. After his dinner with Trump, Trudeau returned home without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on all products from the major American trading partner. Trump called the talks “productive” but signaled no retreat from a pledge that Canada says unfairly lumps it in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. “The idea that we came back empty handed is completely false,” LeBlanc said. “We had a very productive discussion with Mr. Trump and his future Cabinet secretaries. ... The commitment from Mr. Trump to continue to work with us was far from empty handed.” Joining Trump and Trudeau at dinner were Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department, and Mike Waltz, Trump’s choice to be his national security adviser. Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, told The Associated Press on Sunday that “the message that our border is so vastly different than the Mexican border was really understood.” Hillman, who sat at an adjacent table to Trudeau and Trump, said Canada is not the problem when it comes to drugs and migrants. On Monday, Mexico’s president rejected those comments. “Mexico must be respected, especially by its trading partners,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said. She said Canada had its own problems with fentanyl consumption and “could only wish they had the cultural riches Mexico has.” Flows of migrants and seizures of drugs at the two countries’ border are vastly different. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border during the last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. Most of the fentanyl reaching the U.S. — where it causes about 70,000 overdose deaths annually — is made by Mexican drug cartels using precursor chemicals smuggled from Asia. On immigration, the U.S. Border Patrol reported 1.53 million encounters with migrants at the southwest border with Mexico between October 2023 and September 2024. That compares to 23,721 encounters at the Canadian border during that time. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US$2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports as well. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing for national security.

The champions had descended into crisis after a run of seven games without a win – six of which were defeats and the other an embarrassing 3-3 draw after leading 3-0. Four of those losses had come in the Premier League, heavily damaging their chances of claiming a fifth successive title, but they appeared to turn the corner by sweeping Forest aside at the Etihad Stadium. “We needed it,” said City manager Guardiola. “The club, the players, everyone needed to win. “But it is just one game and in three days we are at Selhurst Park, where it has always been difficult. “We played good. We still conceded some transitions and missed some easy things and lost some passes that you have to avoid, but in general, the most important thing was to break this routine of not winning games and we won it.” Kevin De Bruyne, making his first start since September after overcoming a pelvic injury, made a huge difference to a side that appeared rejuvenated. His powerful header was turned in by Bernardo Silva for the opening goal and the Belgian followed up with a powerful strike to make it 2-0. The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season but it was a strong riposte to recent suggestions of a rift with Guardiola. “I’m so happy for him,” said Guardiola of De Bruyne’s telling contribution. “Last season he was many months injured and this season as well. “I’m so happy he’s back. He fought a lot, he’s worked and he’s back with his physicality. The minutes he played in Anfield were really good and today he played 75 fantastic minutes.” Jeremy Doku wrapped up a pleasing win when he finished a rapid counter-attack just before the hour but there was still a downside for City with injuries to defenders Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji. Guardiola said: “For Nathan it doesn’t look good and Manu has struggled a lot over the last two months. We will see. “Phil (Foden) has bronchitis but when he doesn’t have fever he will be ready.” Despite City’s dominance, Forest did have some bright moments and manager Nuno Espirito Santo was not downbeat. He said: “When you lose 3-0 and you say it was a good performance maybe people don’t understand, but I will not say that was a bad performance. “There are positive things for us in the game. Of course there are a lot of bad things, mistakes, but we had chances. “We didn’t achieve but I think we come out proud of ourselves because we tried. For sure, this game will allow us to grow.”haha777 info

Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer who won the presidency in the wake of the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, endured humbling defeat after one tumultuous term and then redefined life after the White House as a global humanitarian, has died. He was 100 years old. The longest-lived American president died on Sunday, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died at 96 in November 2023 , spent most of their lives, The Carter Center said. “Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the center said in posting about his death on the social media platform X. It added in a statement that he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. x Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia. pic.twitter.com/aqYmcE9tXi — The Carter Center (@CarterCenter) December 29, 2024 Businessman, Navy officer, evangelist, politician, negotiator, author, woodworker, citizen of the world — Carter forged a path that still challenges political assumptions and stands out among the 45 men who reached the nation’s highest office. The 39th president leveraged his ambition with a keen intellect, deep religious faith and prodigious work ethic, conducting diplomatic missions into his 80s and building houses for the poor well into his 90s. “My faith demands — this is not optional — my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can, with whatever I have to try to make a difference,” Carter once said. A moderate Democrat, Carter entered the 1976 presidential race as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad smile, outspoken Baptist mores and technocratic plans reflecting his education as an engineer. His no-frills campaign depended on public financing, and his promise not to deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter repeated before narrowly beating Republican incumbent Gerald Ford, who had lost popularity pardoning Nixon. Carter governed amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over racism, women’s rights and America’s global role. His most acclaimed achievement in office was a Mideast peace deal that he brokered by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at the bargaining table for 13 days in 1978. That Camp David experience inspired the post-presidential center where Carter would establish so much of his legacy. Yet Carter’s electoral coalition splintered under double-digit inflation, gasoline lines and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His bleakest hour came when eight Americans died in a failed hostage rescue in April 1980, helping to ensure his landslide defeat to Republican Ronald Reagan. Carter acknowledged in his 2020 “White House Diary” that he could be “micromanaging” and “excessively autocratic,” complicating dealings with Congress and the federal bureaucracy. He also turned a cold shoulder to Washington’s news media and lobbyists, not fully appreciating their influence on his political fortunes. “It didn’t take us long to realize that the underestimation existed, but by that time we were not able to repair the mistake,” Carter told historians in 1982, suggesting that he had “an inherent incompatibility” with Washington insiders. Carter insisted his overall approach was sound and that he achieved his primary objectives — to “protect our nation’s security and interests peacefully” and “enhance human rights here and abroad” — even if he fell spectacularly short of a second term. Ignominious defeat, though, allowed for renewal. The Carters founded The Carter Center in 1982 as a first-of-its-kind base of operations, asserting themselves as international peacemakers and champions of democracy, public health and human rights. “I was not interested in just building a museum or storing my White House records and memorabilia,” Carter wrote in a memoir published after his 90th birthday. “I wanted a place where we could work.” That work included easing nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, helping to avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and negotiating cease-fires in Bosnia and Sudan. By 2022, The Carter Center had declared at least 113 elections in Latin America, Asia and Africa to be free or fraudulent. Recently, the center began monitoring U.S. elections as well. Carter’s stubborn self-assuredness and even self-righteousness proved effective once he was unencumbered by the Washington order, sometimes to the point of frustrating his successors . He went “where others are not treading,” he said, to places like Ethiopia, Liberia and North Korea, where he secured the release of an American who had wandered across the border in 2010. “I can say what I like. I can meet whom I want. I can take on projects that please me and reject the ones that don’t,” Carter said. He announced an arms-reduction-for-aid deal with North Korea without clearing the details with Bill Clinton’s White House. He openly criticized President George W. Bush for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He also criticized America’s approach to Israel with his 2006 book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.” And he repeatedly countered U.S. administrations by insisting North Korea should be included in international affairs, a position that most aligned Carter with Republican President Donald Trump. Among the center’s many public health initiatives, Carter vowed to eradicate the guinea worm parasite during his lifetime, and nearly achieved it: Cases dropped from millions in the 1980s to nearly a handful. With hardhats and hammers, the Carters also built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The Nobel committee’s 2002 Peace Prize cites his “untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” Carter should have won it alongside Sadat and Begin in 1978, the chairman added. Carter accepted the recognition saying there was more work to be done. “The world is now, in many ways, a more dangerous place,” he said. “The greater ease of travel and communication has not been matched by equal understanding and mutual respect.” Carter’s globetrotting took him to remote villages where he met little “Jimmy Carters,” so named by admiring parents. But he spent most of his days in the same one-story Plains house — expanded and guarded by Secret Service agents — where they lived before he became governor. He regularly taught Sunday School lessons at Maranatha Baptist Church until his mobility declined and the coronavirus pandemic raged. Those sessions drew visitors from around the world to the small sanctuary where Carter will receive his final send-off after a state funeral at Washington’s National Cathedral. The common assessment that he was a better ex-president than president rankled Carter and his allies. His prolific post-presidency gave him a brand above politics, particularly for Americans too young to witness him in office. But Carter also lived long enough to see biographers and historians reassess his White House years more generously. His record includes the deregulation of key industries, reduction of U.S. dependence on foreign oil, cautious management of the national debt and notable legislation on the environment, education and mental health. He focused on human rights in foreign policy, pressuring dictators to release thousands of political prisoners . He acknowledged America’s historical imperialism, pardoned Vietnam War draft evaders and relinquished control of the Panama Canal. He normalized relations with China. “I am not nominating Jimmy Carter for a place on Mount Rushmore,” Stuart Eizenstat, Carter’s domestic policy director, wrote in a 2018 book. “He was not a great president” but also not the “hapless and weak” caricature voters rejected in 1980, Eizenstat said. Rather, Carter was “good and productive” and “delivered results, many of which were realized only after he left office.” Madeleine Albright, a national security staffer for Carter and Clinton’s secretary of state, wrote in Eizenstat’s forward that Carter was “consequential and successful” and expressed hope that “perceptions will continue to evolve” about his presidency. “Our country was lucky to have him as our leader,” said Albright, who died in 2022. Jonathan Alter, who penned a comprehensive Carter biography published in 2020, said in an interview that Carter should be remembered for “an epic American life” spanning from a humble start in a home with no electricity or indoor plumbing through decades on the world stage across two centuries. “He will likely go down as one of the most misunderstood and underestimated figures in American history,” Alter told The Associated Press. James Earl Carter Jr. was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains and spent his early years in nearby Archery. His family was a minority in the mostly Black community, decades before the civil rights movement played out at the dawn of Carter’s political career. Carter, who campaigned as a moderate on race relations but governed more progressively, talked often of the influence of his Black caregivers and playmates but also noted his advantages: His land-owning father sat atop Archery’s tenant-farming system and owned a main street grocery. His mother, Lillian , would become a staple of his political campaigns. Seeking to broaden his world beyond Plains and its population of fewer than 1,000 — then and now — Carter won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1946. That same year he married Rosalynn Smith, another Plains native, a decision he considered more important than any he made as head of state. She shared his desire to see the world, sacrificing college to support his Navy career. Carter climbed in rank to lieutenant, but then his father was diagnosed with cancer, so the submarine officer set aside his ambitions of admiralty and moved the family back to Plains. His decision angered Rosalynn, even as she dived into the peanut business alongside her husband. Carter again failed to talk with his wife before his first run for office — he later called it “inconceivable” not to have consulted her on such major life decisions — but this time, she was on board. “My wife is much more political,” Carter told the AP in 2021. He won a state Senate seat in 1962 but wasn’t long for the General Assembly and its back-slapping, deal-cutting ways. He ran for governor in 1966 — losing to arch-segregationist Lester Maddox — and then immediately focused on the next campaign. Carter had spoken out against church segregation as a Baptist deacon and opposed racist “Dixiecrats” as a state senator. Yet as a local school board leader in the 1950s he had not pushed to end school segregation even after the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision, despite his private support for integration. And in 1970, Carter ran for governor again as the more conservative Democrat against Carl Sanders, a wealthy businessman Carter mocked as “Cufflinks Carl.” Sanders never forgave him for anonymous, race-baiting flyers, which Carter disavowed. Ultimately, Carter won his races by attracting both Black voters and culturally conservative whites. Once in office, he was more direct. “I say to you quite frankly that the time for racial discrimination is over,” he declared in his 1971 inaugural address, setting a new standard for Southern governors that landed him on the cover of Time magazine. His statehouse initiatives included environmental protection, boosting rural education and overhauling antiquated executive branch structures. He proclaimed Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the slain civil rights leader’s home state. And he decided, as he received presidential candidates in 1972, that they were no more talented than he was. In 1974, he ran Democrats’ national campaign arm. Then he declared his own candidacy for 1976. An Atlanta newspaper responded with the headline: “Jimmy Who?” The Carters and a “Peanut Brigade” of family members and Georgia supporters camped out in Iowa and New Hampshire, establishing both states as presidential proving grounds. His first Senate endorsement: a young first-termer from Delaware named Joe Biden. Yet it was Carter’s ability to navigate America’s complex racial and rural politics that cemented the nomination. He swept the Deep South that November, the last Democrat to do so, as many white Southerners shifted to Republicans in response to civil rights initiatives. A self-declared “born-again Christian,” Carter drew snickers by referring to Scripture in a Playboy magazine interview, saying he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times.” The remarks gave Ford a new foothold and television comedians pounced — including NBC’s new “Saturday Night Live” show. But voters weary of cynicism in politics found it endearing. Carter chose Minnesota Sen. Walter “Fritz” Mondale as his running mate on a “Grits and Fritz” ticket. In office, he elevated the vice presidency and the first lady’s office. Mondale’s governing partnership was a model for influential successors Al Gore, Dick Cheney and Biden. Rosalynn Carter was one of the most involved presidential spouses in history, welcomed into Cabinet meetings and huddles with lawmakers and top aides. The Carters presided with uncommon informality: He used his nickname “Jimmy” even when taking the oath of office, carried his own luggage and tried to silence the Marine Band’s “Hail to the Chief.” They bought their clothes off the rack. Carter wore a cardigan for a White House address, urging Americans to conserve energy by turning down their thermostats. Amy, the youngest of four children, attended District of Columbia public school. Washington’s social and media elite scorned their style. But the larger concern was that “he hated politics,” according to Eizenstat, leaving him nowhere to turn politically once economic turmoil and foreign policy challenges took their toll. Carter partially deregulated the airline, railroad and trucking industries and established the departments of Education and Energy, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He designated millions of acres of Alaska as national parks or wildlife refuges. He appointed a then-record number of women and nonwhite people to federal posts. He never had a Supreme Court nomination, but he elevated civil rights attorney Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the nation’s second highest court, positioning her for a promotion in 1993. He appointed Paul Volker, the Federal Reserve chairman whose policies would help the economy boom in the 1980s — after Carter left office. He built on Nixon’s opening with China, and though he tolerated autocrats in Asia, pushed Latin America from dictatorships to democracy. But he couldn’t immediately tame inflation or the related energy crisis. And then came Iran. After he admitted the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979 by followers of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Negotiations to free the hostages broke down repeatedly ahead of the failed rescue attempt. The same year, Carter signed SALT II, the new strategic arms treaty with Leonid Brezhnev of the Soviet Union, only to pull it back, impose trade sanctions and order a U.S. boycott of the Moscow Olympics after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. Hoping to instill optimism, he delivered what the media dubbed his “malaise” speech, although he didn’t use that word. He declared the nation was suffering “a crisis of confidence.” By then, many Americans had lost confidence in the president, not themselves. Carter campaigned sparingly for reelection because of the hostage crisis, instead sending Rosalynn as Sen. Edward M. Kennedy challenged him for the Democratic nomination. Carter famously said he’d “kick his ass,” but was hobbled by Kennedy as Reagan rallied a broad coalition with “make America great again” appeals and asking voters whether they were “better off than you were four years ago.” Reagan further capitalized on Carter’s lecturing tone, eviscerating him in their lone fall debate with the quip: “There you go again.” Carter lost all but six states and Republicans rolled to a new Senate majority. Carter successfully negotiated the hostages’ freedom after the election, but in one final, bitter turn of events, Tehran waited until hours after Carter left office to let them walk free. Jimmy Carter speaks on Feb. 3, 2016, at the House of Lords in London. At 56, Carter returned to Georgia with “no idea what I would do with the rest of my life.” Four decades after launching The Carter Center, he still talked of unfinished business. “I thought when we got into politics we would have resolved everything,” Carter told the AP in 2021. “But it’s turned out to be much more long-lasting and insidious than I had thought it was. I think in general, the world itself is much more divided than in previous years.” Still, he affirmed what he said when he underwent treatment for a cancer diagnosis in his 10th decade of life. “I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes,” he said in 2015 . “I’ve had a wonderful life. I’ve had thousands of friends, I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence.”None

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed confidence Wednesday that Elon Musk would not use his proximity to Donald Trump to harm business rivals, calling such actions "profoundly un-American." Speaking at the New York Times DealBook conference, Altman addressed concerns about Musk's announced role heading a new Department of Government Efficiency in the incoming Donald Trump administration, and whether he might use it to favor his own companies. "I may turn out to be wrong, but I believe pretty strongly that Elon will do the right thing," Altman said. "It would be profoundly un-American to use political power to hurt your competitors and advantage your own businesses." Even if there are "lots of things not to like about him... it would go so deeply against the values I believe he holds very dear to himself that I'm not that worried about it." Musk, an OpenAI co-founder who later departed the company, is currently suing Altman's firm and Microsoft, claiming they shifted from the project's original nonprofit mission. He has since launched xAI, reportedly valued at $50 billion, making it one of the world's most valuable startups. Altman said that the court battle was "tremendously sad" and that he once saw Musk as "a mega hero." Sign up to get our free daily email of the biggest stories! Musk became a close ally of Trump during his campaign, spending over $100 million to boost his presidential bid and joining him at rallies. Since the election victory, he has been a frequent presence in the Trump transition and was reportedly on the line when Google CEO Sundar Pichai called the president-elect to congratulate him on winning the election. The tycoon's businesses have deep connections with governments -- both in the United States and elsewhere -- and his new position has raised concerns about conflict of interest. During the interview, Altman also lowered expectations for the importance of OpenAI's models achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), a benchmark of human-level intelligence the company has long set as the goal for its technology. "My guess is we will hit AGI sooner than most people in the world think, and it will matter much less," he said. "A lot of the safety concerns that we and others expressed actually don't come at the AGI moment... AGI can get built. The world goes on mostly the same way," he said. arp/ahaSaints QB situation remains cloudy as matchup with Washington nearsORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Cornerback Taron Johnson is still agitated over in giving up season worsts in points and yards, while melting down on third down in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams last weekend. There’s no better time or opportunity to show how much better they are than this Sunday. That’s when the Bills (10-3) travel to play the NFC-leading Detroit Lions (12-1), who just happen to lead the NFL in scoring and feature the same dynamic style of offense as the Rams. “I think our mindset is just going to be attack,” Johnson said after practice Wednesday. “We can’t wait to play Sunday just to prove people wrong and prove to ourselves that how we played wasn’t who we are.” The Bills acknowledge having several excuses to lean on for — riding a little too high after a division-clinching win, a cross-country trip and facing a more driven opponent in the thick of a playoff race. What’s unacceptable is the hesitancy their usually reliable defensive backs showed in coverage and the lack of pressure applied by their defensive front. The bright side is the substandard performance potentially serving as a late-season reminder of this not being the time to let their foot off the gas. “A lot of teams have scars on their way to having a darn good season. And we’re having a darn good season,” coach Sean McDermott said. “So what has to be in front of us this week is the opportunity that’s in front of us, quite frankly, to challenge that team,” he added, referring to Detroit. “You better bring your heart, you better bring your guts, you better put it on the line.” With a little bit of added fire, the Bills are going back to the basics on defense following an outing in which very little went right. The defense was off-balance from the start in being unable to stop the run, before eventually being picked apart in the passing game while allowing the Rams to score on each of their first six drives (not including a kneel-down to close the first half) in building a 38-21 lead. The most frustrating part was Buffalo’s inability to get off the field while allowing the Rams to convert 11 of 15 third-down chances. LA’s 73.3% third-down conversion rate was the third highest against Buffalo — and worst since Miami converted 75% of its chances in 1986 — since the stat was introduced to NFL gamebooks in 1973. “The recipe to lose a football game is what we did (Sunday) and it starts with me, first and foremost,” defensive coordinator Bobby Babich said Monday. “Move on and let it not happen again. Let it be a learning lesson. Failure is the best teacher.” The challenge is preparing for an exceptionally balanced Lions offense that ranks fourth in the NFL in both rushing and passing, and averaging 32.1 points per outing. The objective, McDermott said, is to not overcorrect but stick to the fundamentals that led to Buffalo winning seven straight before losing to Los Angeles. He placed an emphasis on winning at the line of scrimmage and forcing takeaways, something Buffalo failed to do last weekend for the first time this season. A little more urgency, would help, too. “It is a mentality. It is an attitude, and if you want to play good defense, that’s where it starts,” McDermott said. “There’s not a lot of shortcuts or ways around it. It’s got to be a mentality.” The message resonated even on offense, where quarterback while becoming the NFL’s first player to throw three touchdown passes and rush for three more scores. “It was a case of you saw a team that’s fighting for their lives to try to make the playoffs in the Los Angeles Rams, and they came out ready to play. And maybe we didn’t have that type of urgency,” Allen said. “It forces us to know that we’ve got to be better. We know that.” NOTES: LB Baylon Spector (calf) and DE Dawuane Smoot (wrist) returned to practice Wednesday, opening their 21-day windows to be activated off IR. ... Starting CB Rasul Douglas did not practice and could miss time after hurting his knee on Sunday. ... Buffalo has until this weekend to determine whether to activate OL Tylan Grable (groin) off IR.
