NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says he won’t play Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s games by voting to bring down the government on an upcoming non-confidence motion. The Conservatives plan to introduce a motion that quotes Singh’s own criticism of the Liberals, and asks the House of Commons to declare that it agrees with Singh and has no confidence in the government. The motion is expected to be introduced on Thursday and the debate and vote are set for Monday. Singh says he is not going to vote non-confidence and trigger an election when he believes Poilievre would cut programs the NDP fought for, like dental care and pharmacare. The non-confidence vote was scheduled after Speaker Greg Fergus intervened to pause a filibuster on a privilege debate about a green technology fund. The Conservatives have said they would only end that debate if the NDP agree to topple the government or if the Liberals turn over unredacted documents at the centre of the parliamentary gridlock.WASHINGTON (AP) — After several weeks working mostly behind closed doors, Vice President-elect returned to Capitol Hill this week in a new, more visible role: Helping try to get his most contentious Cabinet picks to confirmation in the Senate, where Vance has served for the last two years. Matt Gaetz and spent the morning sitting in on meetings between Trump’s choice for attorney general and key Republicans, including members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Thursday morning Vance was back, this time accompanying Pete Hegseth, the “Fox & Friends Weekend” host whom Trump has tapped to be the next secretary of defense. Vance is expected to accompany other nominees for meetings in coming weeks as he tries to leverage the two years he has spent in the Senate to help push through Trump’s picks. Usually the job goes to a former senator who has close relationships on the Hill, or a more junior aide. But this time the role fits Vance, said Marc Short, who served as Trump’s first director of legislative affairs as well as chief of staff to Trump’s first vice president, Mike Pence, who spent more than a decade in Congress and led the former president’s transition ahead of his first term. ”JD probably has a lot of current allies in the Senate and so it makes sense to have him utilized in that capacity,” Short said. Unlike the first Trump transition, which played out before cameras at Trump Tower in New York and at the president-elect’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, this one has largely happened behind closed doors in Palm Beach, Florida. There, a small group of officials and aides meet daily at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort to run through possible contenders and interview job candidates. The group includes Elon Musk, the billionaire who has spent so much time at the club that Trump has joked he can’t get rid of him. Vance has been a constant presence, even as he’s kept a lower profile. The Ohio senator has spent much of the last two weeks in Palm Beach, according to people familiar with his plans, playing an active role in the transition, on which he serves as honorary chair. Vance has been staying at a cottage on the property of the gilded club, where rooms are adorned with cherubs, oriental rugs and intricate golden inlays. It’s a world away from the famously hardscrabble upbringing that Vance documented in the memoir that made him famous, “Hillbilly Elegy.” His young children have also joined him at Mar-a-Lago, at times. Vance was photographed in shorts and a polo shirt playing with his kids on the seawall of the property with a large palm frond, a U.S. Secret Service robotic security dog in the distance. Though he has taken a break from TV interviews after months of constant appearances, Vance has been active in the meetings, which began immediately after the election and include interviews and as well as presentations on candidates’ pluses and minuses. Defending himself from criticism that he’d missed a Senate vote in which one of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees was confirmed, Vance wrote that he was meeting at the time “with President Trump to interview multiple positions for our government, including for FBI Director.” “I tend to think it’s more important to get an FBI director who will dismantle the deep state than it is for Republicans to lose a vote 49-46 rather than 49-45,” Vance added on X. “But that’s just me.” While Vance did not come in to the transition with a list of people he wanted to see in specific roles, he and his friend, Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who is also a member of the transition team, were eager to see former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. find roles in the administration. Trump ended up , a powerful position that sits atop the nation’s spy agencies and acts as the president’s top intelligence adviser. And he chose Kennedy to , a massive agency that oversees everything from drug and food safety to Medicare and Medicaid. Vance was also a big booster of Tom Homan, the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, In another sign of Vance’s influence, James Braid, a top aide to the senator, is expected to serve as Trump’s legislative affairs director. Allies say it’s too early to discuss what portfolio Vance might take on in the White House. While he gravitates to issues like trade, immigration and tech policy, Vance sees his role as doing whatever Trump needs. Vance was spotted days after the election giving his son’s Boy Scout troop a tour of the Capitol and was there the day of leadership elections. He returned in earnest this week, first with Gaetz — arguably Trump’s most divisive pick — and then Hegseth, of sexually assaulting a woman in 2017, according to an investigative report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing. Vance hosted Hegseth in his Senate office as GOP senators, including those who sit on the Senate Armed Services Committee, filtered in to meet with the nominee for defense secretary. While a president’s nominees usually visit individual senators’ offices, meeting them on their own turf, the freshman senator — who is accompanied everywhere by a large Secret Service detail that makes moving around more unwieldy — instead brought Gaetz to a room in the Capitol on Wednesday and Hegseth to his office on Thursday. Senators came to them. Vance made it to votes Wednesday and Thursday, but missed others on Thursday afternoon. Vance is expected to continue to leverage his relationships in the Senate after Trump takes office. But many Republicans there have longer relationships with Trump himself. Sen. Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota Republican, said that Trump was often the first person to call him back when he was trying to reach high-level White House officials during Trump’s first term. “He has the most active Rolodex of just about anybody I’ve ever known,” Cramer said, adding that Vance would make a good addition. “They’ll divide names up by who has the most persuasion here,” Cramer said, but added, “Whoever his liaison is will not work as hard at it as he will.” Cramer was complimentary of the Ohio senator, saying he was “pleasant” and ” interesting” to be around. ′′He doesn’t have the long relationships,” he said. “But we all like people that have done what we’ve done. I mean, that’s sort of a natural kinship, just probably not as personally tied.” Under the Constitution, Vance will also have a role presiding over the Senate and breaking tie votes. Monica Mosley will now be heard in Atlantic County after Cumberland County Assignment Judge Benjamin Telsey granted a change-of-venue motion during a hearing Friday. Jarred D. Brown, 31, of Bridgeton; Richard B. Hawkins Willis, 32, of Gloucester City, Camden County; Nyshawn Mutcherson, 29, of Vineland; and Byron Thomas, 35, of Paulsboro, Gloucester County, are each charged with murder, murder during the commission of a crime, burglary, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain person not to possess a weapon, hindering apprehension and obstruction of justice. Cyndia Pimentel, 38, of Paulsboro, is charged with hindering apprehension, obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence. Willis and Thomas both appeared in person at the hearing, while Brown, Mutcherson and Pimentel appeared via Zoom. Andrew Imperiale represents Mutcherson, Ron Thompson represents Pimentel, Jeffrey Hark represents Brown and public defender Alex Varghese represents Thomas. Willis was being represented by a public defender but has since retained attorney Richard Robinson. Detention hearings for Mutcherson, Brown, Willis and Thomas will be held once the cases get transferred to Atlantic County. Pimentel had her detention hearing Nov. 7 and was released from jail with conditions that she must check in with the courts weekly and have no contact with her co-defendants. The new judge will also have to determine whether Cape May County First Assistant Prosecutor Saverio Carroccia can remain on the case. In the motion, the attorneys say Carroccia worked at the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office at the same time as Mosley. New Jersey has codified two new crimes that will come with harsher penalties for individuals breaking into homes, Attorney General Matthew Platkin said Thursday. Carroccia was a senior trial attorney in the office’s homicide unit from 2012 to 2017, his biography shows. His office is handling the case since Mosley worked in Cumberland County. Carroccia didn't object to the change of venue but opposed the motion to remove him from the case. Police responded to a home in the 600 block of Buckshutem Road in Bridgeton at 10:30 p.m. Oct. 15 for a report of multiple people kicking in the front door, police said. Officers found Mosley, 51, suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. On the night of the incident, staff at Inspira Health Center Bridgeton reported to police that an individual, later identified as Mutcherson, had arrived at the facility suffering from a gunshot wound. He falsely told detectives he was wounded in Millville, according to the affidavit of probable cause. The investigation found Brown and Willis picked up Mutcherson prior to the killing, and the three drove to a building on South Avenue to change into dark clothing before heading to Mosley’s home in a black 2012 Chevrolet Equinox registered to Pimentel. The three then entered the home and shot Mosley, who defended herself by shooting Mutcherson in the chest before dying from her injuries, court documents show. Mutcherson was driven to the hospital following the shooting, while Brown and Willis went back to South Avenue and changed into different clothes. Carroccia said during Pimentel’s detention hearing that Mosley was shot in her right knee and left wrist before being shot in the back of the head. In the days that followed, Brown, Willis and Pimentel worked to discard, destroy and conceal evidence of the home invasion and Mosley’s murder, the affidavit states. Lowell Hawthorne’s commitment to education was recalled during a fundraising event bearing his name on November 14 in New Rochelle, New York. Beneficiaries are students in the Caribbean and United States. The third Lowell F Hawthorne Foundation Gala took place at Glen Island Harbour Club. It attracted members of the Jamaican Diaspora and community leaders who celebrated the legacy of Hawthorne, a businessman who co-founded the popular Golden Krust Restaurant chain. He died in 2017 at age 57. Lorna Hawthorne, his widow, established the Foundation seven years ago to uphold her husband’s determination to assist students struggling to pay college tuition. She told the Jamaica Observer that the galas have raised over US$200,000. “While we can’t put an exact number on how many students will benefit, our goal is to support as many students as possible in a meaningful and impactful way. We have to continue partnering with schools and institutions that have different requirements and thresholds, but we remain committed to maximising our impact and providing opportunities for students in both America and the Caribbean,” said Mrs Hawthorne. Throughout the evening, attendees participated in raffles and a silent auction, bidding on exclusive items. Proceeds go to the Foundation’s scholarship programmes. Four persons were also honoured. (AP) — As the situation stands, snowboarder/ski racer Ester Ledecka has two Olympic races on the same day in 2026, at nearly the same time and in Italian mountain towns hours apart. The Czech Republic standout simply can’t make both starting gates. So she may have a big decision to make on Feb. 8, 2026 — race in the women's downhill at the Milan-Cortina Games or go for a three-peat in snowboarding’s parallel giant slalom. Unless, of course, her lobbying efforts pay off. Ledecka said she's going through her country's Olympic committee to reach out and see if one of the events can be switched. The Winter Games schedule was just recently released. “It’s like someone has broken your dream,” the 29-year-old Ledecka said after a training run in Beaver Creek as she prepares for a World Cup downhill and super-G this weekend. “So please change it. Please, please, please. It’s my biggest dream to do both. I can create a great show for people.” Ledecka is the rare athlete to do both winter sports at such a gold medal-winning level. Nearly seven years ago, Ledecka was a surprise winner in the super-G at the Pyeongchang Games — from bib No. 26, no less. A week later, she captured gold in the parallel GS (PGS). At the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, she defended her PGS crown along with finishing fifth in the super-G, 27th in the downhill and fourth in the Alpine combined. To amend an Olympic schedule would not be unprecedented. Before the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, the International Olympic Committee and the governing body for track and field accommodated a request from Allyson Felix to go for a 200-400 double. She earned a silver in the 400. In 1996, the schedule was shifted so American sprinter Michael Johnson could run in the 200 and 400 at the Atlanta Games. He won gold in both. “I would appreciate it,” said Ledecka, who started skiing at 2 years old and snowboarding three years later. “They’re fighting (for it) right now.” The current schedule has snowboarding parallel giant slalom holding a qualifying round from 9 a.m. to 11 on Feb. 8 in Livigno, Italy. The final is set for 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the women's downhill is set to take place in Cortina at 11:30 a.m. It's about a 4-hour drive between the two events. For now, she's leaning toward snowboarding. Only because a few days later she could ski race in a super-G. “I was quite sad about that fact,” Ledecka said of the conflict between events. "We'll see. It’s still quite far away.” Ledecka has 88 World Cup starts in skiing, with 10 podium finishes and four wins. She has 63 World Cup starts in snowboarding, featuring 39 podium finishes and 25 wins. “I don’t know how she does it,” said American ski racer Jacqueline Wiles, who dabbled in snowboarding as a kid. “It’s absolutely insane.” Ledecka enjoys both sports for different reasons. In skiing, it's for the speed. For snowboarding, it's the execution of a turn. It's not always easy splitting her time between the two sports, fitting in training around events. She won a PGS race on Nov. 30 in China before arriving in Beaver Creek. After this, it's off to St. Moritz, Switzerland, for more ski racing. She's currently traveling with eight snowboards and 20 pairs of skis. “You cannot believe how stacked the ski room is right now,” Ledecka cracked. “I really admire my tech guy and how he's handling it all. I’m very happy to have my team help me do this, my dream, of going from the snowboard World Cup to the ski World Cup. I'm having a lot of fun.” Notes: Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland had the fastest time in the second training run Thursday.
