ATLANTA — Jimmy Butler remained away from the team Friday as the Miami Heat flew to Atlanta for Saturday’s second stop on their three-game trip. Butler has been away from the team the past three games due to what initially was listed as a stomach ailment, an absence that coincided with yet another round of trade speculation. Having exited last Friday’s home loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first quarter, when he also appeared to turn an ankle, Butler then missed last Saturday night’s loss in Orlando, Monday night’s home victory against the Brooklyn Nets and then Thursday night’s win in the rematch with the Magic at Kia Center. Butler was listed as out Thursday due to “return to competition reconditioning.” Thursday was the eighth game missed this season by Butler, who missed 22 of last season’s 82 games, as well as a play-in game and the Heat’s 4-1 first-round playoff ouster at the hands of the Boston Celtics. In addition, Butler, 35, also has been limited to a pair of seven-minute appearances this season, one due to a November ankle sprain that kept him out the next four games, and then last Friday’s game against the Thunder. Amid Butler’s absence have been reports of disenchantment with the Heat and a desire for a trade, with the Heat previously having shut down the possibility of an extension that the six-time All-Star remains eligible for through June. In the wake of such conjecture, Heat President Pat Riley issued a statement Thursday that said, “We usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches. Therefore, we will make it clear — we are not trading Jimmy Butler.” The Heat’s three-game trip continues Saturday against the Hawks before concluding Sunday against the Houston Rockets. The Heat are 4-4 in Butler’s absence this season. Jaime Jaquez Jr. has started in his place the past two games. Jaquez stepped forward in Thursday night’s 89-88 victory over the Magic in one of his most complete performances of the season, a 15-point outing that included 3-of-5 shooting on 3-pointers and five steals. “It meant a lot,” Jaquez said of helping fuel the victory. “It’s been something that I’ve been working on a lot, as far as the little things, trying to be the best defender I can be, on the ball, off the ball, doing all the little things to help our team win games. That’s really been my focus, just to keep getting back to that.” Jaquez entered Thursday 11 of 45 on 3-pointers, with just two total conversions in his previous 10 games. “I mean, it feels good to hit a few, I ain’t gonna lie,” he said. “But my teammates, they never told me to stop shooting. They always said to let it fly. That just gives me confidence. It’s something that I work on every single day. “When they’re not going in, it’s tough. But to see a couple fall, it ends up feeling like the ocean. It’s been great just trusting in the work and just trusting that process.” Erik Spoelstra said the overall performance is what resonated with the coaching staff. “It’s not about the threes necessarily,” he said of the 2023 first-round pick out of UCLA. “The reason we drafted him and the reason he’s had success over the course of his college career and last year is he does winning things. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trump's movement — wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump's Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks wavered in afternoon trading on Wall Street Monday at the start of a holiday-shortened week. The S&P 500 rose 0.4%. A handful of technology companies helped support the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 63 points, or 0.2% as of 1:18 p.m. Eastern time. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 0.7%. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, rose 3%. Broadcom jumped 5.2% to also help support the broader market. Japanese automakers Honda Motor and Nissan said they are talking about combining in a deal that might also include Mitsubishi Motors. Honda rose 3.8% and Nissan rose 1.6% in Tokyo. Eli Lilly rose 3% after announcing that regulators approved Zepbound as the first and only prescription medicine for adults with sleep apnea. Department store Nordstrom fell 1.7% after it agreed to be taken private by Nordstrom family members and a Mexican retail group in a $6.25 billion deal. The Conference Board said that consumer confidence slipped in December. Its consumer confidence index fell back to 104.7 from 112.8 in November. Wall Street was expecting a reading of 113.8. The unexpectedly weak consumer confidence update follows several generally strong economic reports last week. One report showed the overall economy grew at a 3.1% annualized rate during the summer, faster than earlier thought. The latest report on unemployment benefit applications showed that the job market remains solid. A report on Friday said a measure of inflation the Federal Reserve likes to use was slightly lower last month than economists expected. Worries about inflation edging higher again had been weighing on Wall Street and the Fed. The central bank just delivered its third cut to interest rates this year, but inflation has been hovering stubbornly above its target of 2%. It has signaled that it could deliver fewer cuts to interest rates next year than it earlier anticipated because of concerns over inflation. Expectations for more interest rate cuts have helped drive a 24% gain for the S&P 500 in 2024. That drive included 57 all-time highs this year. Inflation concerns have added to uncertainties heading into 2025, which include the labor market's path ahead and shifting economic policies under an incoming President Donald Trump. Longtime CBS Sports broadcaster Greg Gumbel has died. He was 78. "It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel," Gumbel's wife Marcy and daughter Michelle announced in a statement to , where Gumbel has served as a broadcaster and host for decades. "He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer. Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity." Gumbel's family continued: "He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten. Greg's memory will forever be treasured by his family, dearest friends, colleagues and all who loved him." The legendary broadcaster first started with CBS Sports in 1989, where he pulled double duty as an NFL play-by-play announcer and an in-studio host for college basketball, including the NCAA Tournament. earlier this year due to a "family health issues," CBS announced at the time. Gumbel, the older brother of sportscaster Bryant Gumbel, was born May 3, 1946 in New Orleans and grew up in Chicago. Gumbel left a medical sales job for broadcasting after his brother informed him of an open sportscaster position in Chicago. Gumbel had stints at Chicago’s WMAQ-TV, Madison Square Garden Network, ESPN and WFAN radio before landing at CBS Sports in October 1989. Gumbel quickly became a fixture at CBS Sports, where he hosted "The NFL Today" alongside Terry Bradshaw from 1990 to 1993, including Super Bowl 26 in 1992. He also served as the primetime anchor for the network's coverage of the 1994 Olympic Winter Games and co-anchored CBS Sports' weekday-morning broadcasts of the 1992 Olympic Winter Games. Not only did he host various events, including CBS' coverage of Daytona International Speedway in 1999, Gumbel served as a play-by-play announcer for the College World Series, Major League Baseball and college basketball. "I like the variety," Gumbel in December 2017. "I like the fact that I'm not always in the studio or not always at the games, but March Madness is a really special event... It is hectic but at the same time, I wouldn't change places with anyone." Gumbel worked for NBC Sports from 1994-98 before returning for his second stint with CBS Sports as the studio host for the network's March Madness coverage. He also served as a play-by-play announcer and host for the NFL. CBS Sports celebrated Gumbel's 50th anniversary in broadcasting in 2022 and signed Gumbel to a contract extension in March 2023 to allow him to continue March Madness coverage while stepping away from NFL duties. "The CBS Sports family is devastated by the passing of Greg Gumbel," David Berson, the president & CEO of CBS Sports said in a statement. "There has never been a finer gentleman in all of television. He was beloved and respected by those of us who had the honor to call him a friend and colleague." Laura Loomer has been kicked off lots of social media sites, including Twitter. After Elon Musk bought the service in 2022, he reinstated her, along with many others who had been booted by Twitter's previous management. She says Musk made the move because she was criticizing his stance on immigration. You may be unaware of Loomer — described by Wikipedia as "an American far-right political activist , conspiracy theorist, and internet personality" — and/or the online rock fight about immigration and racism breaking out among different wings of Trump supporters. I simply want to remind you that — if Loomer's allegation is correct — this would be par for the course for Musk and his social media company. (Musk hasn't denied Loomer's charges, and has told his followers to ignore her because she's " trolling for attention ." I've asked her and Twitter/X for additional comment.) Advertisement As I've noted before, the most consistent thing about Musk's management style at Twitter is his erratic, flip-flopping, inconsistency. Sometimes it's about relatively small stuff, like wooing Don Lemon to start a talk show on Twitter, and then canceling the deal before the show ever started. Sometimes it's about really big stuff — like agreeing to pay some $44 billion for Twitter, then spending weeks in court trying not to buy it. In any case, the only way you can be surprised by stuff like this at this point is if you never paid attention. Advertisement But I do think it's still worth pointing out. Because while Musk's management style at Twitter hasn't changed, his responsibilities have changed. He's no longer just the richest person in the world, who runs important companies like Tesla and SpaceX, in addition to Twitter. Musk may now be the most powerful unelected person in America , given his importance to Donald Trump and his upcoming administration. There's his role at DOGE , for starters. And the fact that he appears to be conducting foreign policy for Trump . And that he used Twitter to temporarily tank a government funding bill this month. Advertisement We don't know how long this arrangement is going to last, and what kind of impact Musk is going to have. But we do know that for now, a man with the power to affect the way the American government operates is the same man who can change the way he runs Twitter depending on how he feels at any given moment. We shouldn't ignore that.
