Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has fired back at the former governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter Odili, saying that “an elder statesman should not be a trader and a sycophant all the time.” A statement signed by the FCT Minister’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, on Sunday, said Wike spoke at the Special Thanksgiving Service organised by the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, at the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Oro-Igwe/Eliogbolo Archdeaconry Church of the Holy Spirit, Eliozu Parish, Port Harcourt, on Sunday. Olayinka quoted Wike as saying that it was unfortunate that somebody who is supposed to be seen as an elder statesman and called a father can reduce himself to a sycophant and a trader. But somebody called me last night, and told me what someone said in the social media. I said until I read it myself. He took the slot and gave it to his own daughter. Yet, it has taken seven years and a sensational news development in August 2024 for the national media to finally give WCC the coverage that their groundbreaking feminism merits. WCC came together in early 2017 following the sexual assault of a Malayalam film star, many months before #MeToo in the US. This year, the group attracted international attention with the release of the Hema Committee Report on the working conditions of women in Malayalam cinema. The committee was set up by the Kerala government at WCC's urging. Le Monde described its report as 'explosive' for 'revealing widespread sexual harassment and abuse' in the industry. The conversation has since fallen off the national radar. But WCC is unrelenting in its pursuit of equitable workplaces for women. While the media and public remained preoccupied with the sexual crimes unearthed by the Hema Committee Report, WCC determinedly kept drawing our focus back to the fact that these crimes are just one part of the report and a symptom of a larger problem - gender inequality - pervading the film industry and society at large. As the Kerala High Court monitors the action taken by the authorities on the Hema Committee Report findings, WCC is quietly working towards shaping government policy in the state. This single-mindedness has extracted a heavy price from the organisation's members. Actors Parvathy Thiruvothu and Ramya Nambessan are among those who have publicly spoken of losing work in their male-dominated industry as retribution for their activism. That said, the group has provided a useful template for activists in other film industries. Women of the Telugu industry, for instance, got together to form the Voice of Women with similar goals in 2019, and have repeatedly acknowledged WCC as an inspiration. Any future encyclopaedia on feminism will be incomplete without a chapter on WCC. That chapter will be written, though, only if we acknowledge the persistent marginalisation and erasure of women's pivotal roles in rights movements, and course-correct. The previous Trump administration did not increase the skilled visa program, instead clamping down on visas for students and educated workers, increasing denial rates. Not everyone in corporate America thinks the skilled worker program is great. Former workers at IT company Cognizant that said the company favored Indian employees over Americans from 2013 to 2022. A found Cognizant, and other similar outsourcing companies, mainly used its skilled work visas for lower-level positions. Workers alleged Cognizant preferred Indian workers because they could be paid less and were more willing to accept inconvenient or less-favorable assignments. Innovation is our superpower and it relies on people. Sourcing talent from 8 billion people in the world instead of 330 million here makes sense. Nearly half our Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children. Growing them also relies on expanding our skilled workforce. The cap on skilled-worker visas has hardly changed since the computer age started. With AI on the horizon, attracting and building talent is more important than ever. After years of openly allowing millions of undocumented entrants into the country, why is there controversy over legally increasing somewhat the number having desirable skills? Undocumented immigration significantly impacts lower skill level jobs and wages competing with domestic workers at every skill level. Why should special cases be made against those having higher skills? Could they just not walk across the border anyway, why make it more inconvenient to those with desirable skills? Knowledge and technology are key drivers of the U.S. economy. Students come from all over the world to learn at U.S. universities, and their spending contributed $50 billion to U.S. exports last year. Technological advantage is what keeps us ahead of the rest of the world. Highly skilled immigrants contribute much more in taxes than they receive in public benefits. The skills immigrants bring to America can make us all better off. According to Forbes, the majority of billion-dollar startups were founded by foreigners. I’ve interviewed dozens of data analysts and programmers from Berkeley, UCSD, USD and a few other schools and 75% of them are foreign. There simply are not enough American graduates to fill the AI and data mining related jobs now exploding in the U.S. If we wish to remain a competitive economy, we need highly skilled and bright immigrants to come here and stay. Being able to employ highly skilled workers from a larger pool of candidates would strengthen the competitiveness of U.S. companies by increasing their capacity to perform research and innovate. This would boost the country’s economic output. Skilled workers from other nations that cannot remain in the U.S. will find jobs working for foreign rivals. The demand for H-1B visas far exceeds the current cap of 85,000, demonstrating a need to modify this program. Every country needs skilled workers, at all levels, to grow its economy. We should take advantage of the opportunity these workers provide our employers who need these skills. It should be blended into our immigration policies allowing for both short and long term visas. Despite the abhorrent rhetoric and curtailing of visas in the first term, I hope the incoming administration can be persuaded to enact positive changes to a clearly flawed system. But it should be based upon need, not politics. It crashed while making an attempt to land in Aktau in Kazakhstan after flying east across the Caspian Sea. The alert was issued on December 26th at 4:04 a.m. In a statement issued through their Facebook page, Coos-Curry Electric stated that they had experienced widespread outages, affecting 1,937 meters across the service territory of Coquille, Port Orford, Gold Beach and Brookings and parts of Coos Bay due to high winds and severe weather conditions. Their crews actively patrolled the outage area to locate system faults and restore power; however, current weather conditions, including severe winds, heavy rain and lightning, created significant challenges for their restoration efforts. Currently, the power has been restored. The cause of the outage is unknown. As conditions allow, their crews will continue to work safely to ensure their customers maintain their electrical power as this could be an ongoing event. Among them, a giant of a man recently passed away, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, at the age of 92. His demise has affected many politicians and citizens alike.
