According to data from Adobe , consumers used Buy Now, Pay Later payment methods to fund nearly a billion dollars of purchases on Cyber Monday alone. Estimates peg Buy Now, Pay Later's share of total spending across the two days at 7.7%, up from 7.5% last year and 6.8% in 2022. Affirm ( AFRM 5.17% ) is emerging as a big winner in the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) growth trend. The company has partnered with leading consumer-facing companies, such as Amazon and Apple , to grow its user base as consumers increasingly consider deferred payment choices. Could Affirm be the next big thing in fintech ? I've analyzed the business to determine how likely Affirm will become a millionaire-making stock. Here is what you need to know. Tremendous growth potential from market expansion alone Consumer debt is a pillar of the U.S. economy. Today, household credit card debt is at $1.16 trillion, an all-time high. Credit cards have been around for decades and can bury people in high-interest debt if their spending gets away from them. Buy Now, Pay Later wants to disrupt the credit card industry. It involves originating installment loans on a per-transaction basis. Affirm takes it a step further, championing its transparency as it doesn't even charge late fees to borrowers. The growth opportunity for Buy Now, Pay Later is massive. Grand View Research, a consulting firm, estimates the BNPL market will grow 24% annually through 2030. Affirm is working to expand in three key areas to grow its business: users, merchants, and engagement (transactions per user). In Q1 of Affirm's fiscal year 2025, the company posted solid growth in all three categories: Importantly, Affirm's gross merchandise volume seems to be growing faster than the Buy Now, Pay Later industry, which signals that the company is executing well. Affirm's growth versus the field is critical to watch because Buy Now, Pay Later is already becoming highly competitive with fellow disruptors like Klarna and Afterpay ( Block ) and incumbents like PayPal . I think there's room for more than one winner. There are hundreds of millions of adult consumers worldwide (Affirm recently launched in the U.K.). Meanwhile, e-commerce is still a fraction of total retail spending, and Buy Now, Pay Later is an even smaller fraction of e-commerce! In other words, the opportunity is big enough that, if all goes well, Affirm could become a massive company over the coming years and beyond. The Eagles are looking to clinch the NFC East title while completing a rare sweep of the rival Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in Philadelphia. The Eagles (12-3) will have to play without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who sustained a concussion during last weekend's 36-33 loss at Washington that snapped their team-record 10-game winning streak. He was ruled out on Friday after missing practice all week. Backup quarterback Kenny Pickett suffered a rib injury against the Commanders, but he was a full participant at Thursday's practice and was limited on Friday. Pickett is expected to start, with Tanner McKee his backup on Sunday as Philadelphia tries to sweep Dallas for the first time since 2011. Meanwhile, the Cowboys (7-8) are clicking with their own QB2 at the controls. Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant declared for the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday after three seasons with the Wolverines. The 6-foot-3, 339-pound junior was a third-team All-American and a second-team All-Big Ten selection this season. He had three sacks among his 32 total tackles over 12 games in 2024. As a sophomore, Grant helped the Wolverines claim the national championship with 29 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks in 15 games. As a daily through the years, readers were used to reading about events in the next issue of the Herald the following day, however, the most obvious repercussion of not printing daily was that publishing a story the next day wasn’t a viable option. Print wise, people would have to wait a couple days before they could read about it in the paper, unless they had online access to the Herald’s website. This is a burgeoning era for newspapers as many are having to shift their focus to more of a digital footprint. Obviously, we want to get news to you as soon as possible, and the web provides an almost real-time option to get stories to the public fast. It also gives us the option to provide a narrative flow, depending on the importance of the story, that starts with a brief two or three sentence alert or breaking news, that can be followed up on and updated as time moves forward. This holds through with follow-up stories if required. Still, while online publishing allows for a certain fluidity in terms of timely news coverage, we can’t forget about the print edition and the many readers we still have faithfully turning our pages. So what contributes to the timing of publishing a story? Broadly speaking, the story itself often is the determining factor. Breaking news finds publication online as soon as we can get it there. These can include subjects such as weather-related events, emergencies, political news, milestone moments and major announcements just to name a few. Take the flooding that occurred this past June. Due to the direct impact on the area, we were reporting on this event as soon as we could and updating when there was something new. This was not an event that could wait until a printed edition. At the same time, those stories that normally can wait until a printed edition to come out tend to lie more on the feature side of things. A larger story that we’ve worked on throughout the week — and that normally holds down our main story slot on the front — is an example of a story that can wait. While there is plenty of news throughout the week that makes it online first, these types of stories give readers something fresh to look forward to. Another key determining factor of when a story goes online vs. in print is the timeliness. This really applies to upcoming events and sports stories. A basketball, football or volleyball game story will get posted immediately online afterwards because it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to hold onto a game story for three, four days, especially as there are games in between when it happens and when it runs. Likewise, the digital format works well for upcoming events. The general rule of thumb is try to print a story about a week out from the event so as to keep it fresh in people’s minds, but sometimes that doesn’t work out in the paper, so being able to get it online is a remedy to that. Also, it gets the story a little extra boost because it’s effectively pushing through in two different areas and oftentimes reaching two different segments of the population. Having to go down to two days a week would have been very different 20 years ago, but because we have the digital option we have currently — whether that’s our website, Facebook or Twitter — it allows us to control and adapt to situations dependent on when we publicize the story.Semester 2 registration is open at Saskatchewan’s Distance Learning Centre. Sask DLC is a fully accredited online school that offers Kindergarten to Grade 12 education to Saskatchewan students of all ages and backgrounds. The straightforward school supply list includes a computer with internet access and, as part of the computer or as an add-on, a mouse, microphone, and webcam. Students also need headphones/earbuds, a scanner/cell phone camera for submitting work, a printer and paper, along with standard supplies such as pens/pencils, an eraser, ruler, scissors, markers, geometry set, binders, and paper or notebooks. New courses in practical and applied arts and elective courses will give students greater opportunities to explore their interests or try something new and see if it sparks their curiosity. Tourism 10 and 20 courses will introduce students to food and beverage, accommodation, recreation and entertainment, transportation and travel services. Tourism 10 provides the theoretical component necessary for Tourism 20. Tourism 20, newly available in Semester 2, provides more theory and is coupled with a work placement. Other new courses available in Semester 2 include Energy and Mines – Oil & Gas 20 and Football Skills 10. Students enrolling in Energy and Mines 20 will learn about energy exploration, production and environmental stewardship practices, as well as industry trends, safety, economic impacts and technological advancements. This course, available in Semester 2 only, provides 50 hours of online theory and a 50-hour work placement. Football Skills 10, one of the courses offered as part of a grouping of unique electives, will introduce students to the basic concepts of football. They will explore the elements and rules of tackle, touch and flag football while developing fitness levels, mental training and leadership skills. Students will examine the importance of basic training, conditioning, nutrition and mental wellness in developing an athlete. They will learn about game strategy and tactics, individual and team goal setting, leadership, communication and team building, sportsmanship and fair play and have the opportunity to explore pathways in football beyond high school. Football 20 and 30 are expected to be available in the 2025-26 school year. Also, Baseball 10, 20, and 30 are part of the unique electives grouping. Whether new to baseball or having some experience, students will find that these courses cater to all skill levels. Starting with the basics and rules, students progress to intermediate topics like statistics and metrics for athlete development and can explore non-playing careers such as coaching, umpiring, recruiting, and broadcasting. Baseball 30 will be available in Semester 2. Sask Polytech provided high school students taking online automotive courses, with the opportunity to get practical, hands-on learning in the automotive mechanical field, through a one-day learning camp at the Sask Polytech Saskatoon Campus. Sask DLC and Sask Polytech learning camps provide students from across the province with opportunities to learn about potential career paths and make informed choices for their future beyond high school. The camps allow students to either confirm their current career aspirations or discover new ones. Students got a preview of the Automotive Service Technician certificate program and apprenticeship training options available at Sask Polytech. “Sask Polytech is excited to support students interested in pursuing a career in the automotive industry,” Sask Polytech President and CEO Dr. Larry Rosia said in a News Release. “High school students can gain numerous benefits from exploring the trades and participating in the camp. Students participating in the optional learning camp at Sask Polytech will earn six credit hours toward their work placement requirement. Student work placements are possible due to a partnership between Sask DLC and the Saskatchewan Automobile Dealers Association (SADA). Through this partnership, students are provided with opportunities to complete their work placement at a SADA member dealership. This partnership provides students with work placement opportunities near their home community and supports the automotive sector’s recruitment of future qualified employees to serve the industry. The United States maintains the most powerful military in the world. That isn’t surprising where America spends more per year on its armed forces than the next 9 countries combined. China and India have larger active military troops, but America is considered the most potent military power due to its advanced weaponry and technology. America currently maintains 1.3 million active duty members with approximately 230,000 being female. The percentage of women serving has been on the increase since 2017 as significant sexual and racial diversity exists within America’s military “family.” It fluctuates, but the current level of U.S. military spending consumes approximately 13% of the federal budget. For perspective, America’s 35 trillion national debt has grown to the point where annual interest costs could soon exceed our military expenditures. Evaluating the focus of the military to improve efficiency, and gaining control over growth in the national debt, should be top priorities for Trump’s incoming government. If the first Trump presidency is a predictor, neither is likely to occur. The world is a volatile place and ongoing wars continue to feed international instability. Trump claims he will end these conflicts posthaste, but America’s military must always be kept at the ready. Most Americans know we owe a perpetual debt of gratitude to our military and the veterans and fallen soldiers who protect our ideals and freedoms. If news reports and Trump’s words can be believed, significant turmoil is coming to the military. It has been reported top level generals might be terminated by Trump, and that he plans to use the military to enact mass deportations. The conservative American Heritage Foundation website states: “The American military remains a faithful and loyal servant of the republic. Most Americans are still proud and trusting of our military.” This observation needs to hold true for the sake of our nation. It is an ironic paradox that protecting America’s democracy is the primary charge and responsibility of the military given that it is an institution where democracy, freedom of speech and assembly are not permitted. The freedoms inherit in Democracy, and the discipline required to maintain the military, have rarely conflicted during our country’s history. Maintaining that cohesive separation reflects the independence of America’s military and the brilliance of our country’s Constitutional design. Part of maintaining American democracy is the oath taken by members of the military. There is a significant deviation between the oath administered to enlistees and officers. Both swear to support and defend the U.S. Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, but enlisted members swear to obey the orders of the President and their officers in accordance with the military code. Officers do not swear to uphold the orders of the president, but rather to follow the Constitution in the faithful discharge of their duties. The officers serve the president as the nation’s chief military executive, but do so solely within the confines of lawful orders. The arguable incongruence between the two oaths is addressed on the U.S. Marine website where it states: “By swearing allegiance to a set of ideals and laws, our military is not bound by the orders of a single person, but are dedicated to the defense of the people and their way of life.” The site then notes that the oath is meant to protect officers from being manipulated by a leader who wants to gain control over the military by imposing a dictatorship. The officer oath acts as a safeguard to prevent the abuse of power by a rogue president. The strength of America’s democratic system is going to be tested by an incoming president who vowed not to be a dictator “except on day one.” Trump also said he would consider using America’s military on the “enemy within” as he defines them. Trump has been known to blow hot air, and Americans will soon learn if his words are hyperbole. For the stability of our country, Trump’s election rhetoric needs to remains just that. If he begins removing top military generals to try and cow others into individual loyalty rather than obedience to the Constitution, and if he turns the military upon U.S. citizens to further his policies and effectuate mass deportations, our vaunted democracy will face its greatest test.

He will assume office on January 20, and, if we are to believe what he says, will start implementing his America First policy by imposing some of the most extensive tariffs ever enforced by the United States. He has promised to impose them not just on China, but also Mexico and Canada – unless the latter two do something about illegal immigration to America. While Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has his own problems to worry about, and has yet to respond to Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has, in a letter to the president-elect, warned of “dire consequences” should Washington go ahead with such measures. Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has stated China will prioritise its relations with Mexico. This should not come as a surprise. For Beijing, a second Trump presidency was always on the table. All it needs to do now is capitalise on the contradictions that Trump 2.0 will bring about over the next five years. All this doubtless makes Donald Trump the most consequential person out there right now. But there is as yet no consensus on what kind of person he is. There are two schools of thought regarding him. The first frames him as an aberration, a quirk in an otherwise well-oiled system of world order. It portrays him as illiberal, in contrast to the rules-based order that the US is supposed to represent. American liberals will go out of their way to convince you that he does not stand for their values. They will ask you not to judge American or Western society based on what Trump and his Cabinet does, be it about migrants, borders, the economy, or DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) and critical race theory. The second reading of Trump, on the other hand, frames him as an inevitable though not unavoidable consequence of Western politics over the last half-century, the result of a deterioration in the West-led rules-based order. As US liberals themselves will confirm, the bipartisan consensus which existed between Democrats and Republicans is no longer as strong as it was. The Republican Party has moved so far to the right that the Democratic Party, which has been moving to the right since the Clinton presidency, has more or less lost track. This has had serious repercussions on American foreign policy. If the recent presidential election proved anything, it is that fact-checking, moderation, and centrism no longer determines outcomes in US elections. Since 1993, the Democratic Party has shown itself to be willing in accepting moderate elements from other political groups: during this election cycle, for instance, it co-opted sections of the Republican Party opposed to Trump, including those who held high security and intelligence positions during his first presidency. Yet the end-result was a resounding, though not landslide, defeat for Harris, and a consequent denunciation of her campaign by her own colleagues, including Senator Bernie Sanders, who accused her managers of not concentrating on the working class. It also proved that Trump values loyalty over almost everything else. I use the qualifier “almost” with some trepidation, because we have yet to see to what extent his need for loyalty will shape his second presidency. Some of his Cabinet picks and other appointments, including Elon Musk, Vivek Ramasamy, and even Vice-President J. D. Vance, are known to have been critics of Trump in the past. He appears to be quite willing to overlook their past affiliations. However, in side-lining Nikki Haley and Mike Pompeo – and making a song and dance about it on X – shows how much he values loyalty now. As a US political analyst told me, it is difficult to predict Trump – as his appointment of Marco Rubio, a critic of Trump during his first presidency, shows. One can justify Rubio’s appointment, though, on the grounds that while being critical of Trump, he did not go out of his way, as Haley and Pompeo, and Mike Pence did, in displaying his opposition. All of this confirms that, as far as foreign policy goes, there will be perceptible shifts in the years to come. The liberal view of things is that the policies of Trump 2.0, in particular the tariffs on China and even US allies, will impact the US economy badly. Some countries will be affected more than others. Europe, for instance, is already reeling from Ukraine, and it has turned into an “adjustment variable” – as Joseph Borrell bluntly put it recently – for US foreign policy. The European Union was already becoming wary of Joe Biden’s side-lining of their concerns. In Trump, they will likely encounter someone even more willing to throw them to the side in pursuit of US foreign policy objectives. America First, Trump’s preferred policy, is a morass of contradictions. Liberals who advocate for an interventionist foreign policy will argue that it will lead to the US absconding from its responsibilities on the world stage. But will America First necessarily mean an abandonment of its interventionist foreign policy? Interventionism has been a hallmark of the US for at least the last century and a half: it is what has defined and secured its superpower status. The Trump presidency will accommodate a different vision of interventionism: determined less by a concern for rights and values than by a concern for immediate interests. Lindsey Graham’s denunciation of the International Criminal Court warrant on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his threat to US allies that comply with it is a case in point. My prediction is that the foreign policy of the second Trump presidency will play out over four specific areas or battlegrounds: border and migrant issues vis-à-vis Mexico and the rest of Latin America; trade and tariffs vis-à-vis China; greater engagement in the Indo-Pacific vis-à-vis allies like India; a deepening of ties with Israel, regardless of consequences for stability in West Asia; and a policy of confrontation with Ukraine vis-à-vis Russia. In all this, the world is likely to confront a major contradiction: a US president who says he prioritises “peace through strength”, but has little regard for the concerns of US allies. Trump’s attitude to Taiwan is a classic example: he reiterates his support for the country vis-à-vis China, but also lambastes it for having stolen from the US chip industry. One can justify these turnarounds by framing Trump as an exception. Yet in terms of the shifts in US foreign policy over the last 30 years, he is all too characteristic of that country and the fecklessness with which it handles relations with its own allies. The rule was proposed Thursday and is intended to reassure consumers about the safety of makeup, baby powder and other personal care products. The rule follows years of lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson and other companies alleging links between talc-based baby powder and cancer. Research has found mixed evidence of a potential link between cancer and talc, although the possibility has been recognized for decades because of how it is mined.
