The request came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court, in which the company argued the court should strike down a law that could ban the platform by January 19 while the government emphasised its position that the statute is needed to eliminate a national security risk. “President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the court consider staying the Act’s deadline for divestment of January 19 2025, while it considers the merits of this case,” said Mr Trump’s amicus brief, which supported neither party in the case. The filings come ahead of oral arguments scheduled for January 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. Earlier this month, a panel of three federal judges on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously upheld the statute, leading TikTok to appeal to the Supreme Court. The brief from Mr Trump said he opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office”.Stock market today: S&P 500, Nasdaq clinched closing records again; Powell eyed

Irv Wilson, a former programming executive at NBC and producer of several high profile TV movies that starred Jerry Lewis, Martin Sheen, Telly Savalas, Bruce Dern and Morgan Freeman, died December 26 after a short illness. He was 93. His death was confirmed by his longtime friend, Tom Nunan, who paid tribute to Wilson on Facebook by writing, “Wilson loved life, and anyone who became close to him knew that a good glass of red wine, a little weed, [his wife’s] cooking, and a Giants game came pretty close to heaven for the well-loved, culturally complex maven.” Born in New York City, Wilson served in the Korean war before returning to the Big Apple to attend NYU via the G.I. Bill. He would go on to spend his career in the entertainment industry, first as a talent agent and producer, then as a TV programming executive for NBC where he oversaw the TV movie department and later, daytime and late night programming. He worked alongside Fred Silverman and Brandon Tartikoff and helped to discover future filmmakers such as Ron Howard while supporting gifted playwrights like Stanley Greenberg. After his network executive life, Wilson returned to producing work under deals at Fries Entertainment and Viacom, where he made several high profile TV movies. He may be best known for executive producing The Missiles of October , an ABC made-for-TV play from 1974 about the Cuban Missile Crisis that starred William Devane as President John F. Kennedy and Martin Sheen as Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. Nunan says his friend was also proud of his 1980 TV movie FDR: The Last Year for NBC that starred Jason Robards. Wilson was a lifelong Giants fan, even after their move to San Francisco. He was also a news and information junkie and liked to spend much of his retirement debating politics. “He will be missed by many, but remembered by all who met him as simply a wonderful guy, a true character who always managed to get you to pick up lunch,” Nunan said on Facebook. “As he’d put it himself, he was King of the ‘Schnorrers.’ Look it up. It’s Yiddish, the language of giants.” Wilson is survived by Anne Carlucci, his wife of 46 years who was also a prolific TV movie producer; and his daughters Amy, Julie, and Kate.Singh won’t support Conservative non-confidence motion that uses his own words
Washington, D.C., Dec. 03, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- RAINN , the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, today announced it has been selected as a winner of the 2024 Amazon Web Services (AWS) IMAGINE Grant , a public grant opportunity open to registered charities in the United Kingdom and Ireland and registered 501(c) nonprofit organizations in the United States who are using technology to solve the world’s most pressing challenges. Reaching out for help is already difficult, and removing barriers to accessing crisis support for survivors is a critical component of RAINN’s mission. Together, utilizing AWS services, we will help more survivors and work towards creating a world free from sexual violence.” "At AWS, we're inspired by the nonprofit sector's unwavering commitment to preserving the dignity and health of people and our planet," said Allyson Fryhoff, managing director of nonprofit and nonprofit health at AWS. Italgas, which two years ago acquired DEPA Infrastructure and renamed Greece’s gas grid company Enaon, announced this week it is preparing a total investment of 1 billion euros in Greece as part of the group’s 2024-2030 Strategic Plan. This program will be executed by its subsidiary Enaon, focusing on four main pillars to support Greece’s ongoing ecological transition: Methanization of areas not yet connected to the gas distribution network and contributing to the phaseout of more polluting fuels like lignite and coal; digital transformation of the network, including the replacement of traditional smart meters with “H2 ready” technology; development of renewable gases, primarily biomethane and green hydrogen, to bolster decarbonization efforts; and repurposing the existing network to make the energy infrastructure more flexible, ready for a more sustainable energy future. The plan allocates €650 million for the construction of over 3,000 kilometers of new network, extending service to areas not yet connected. This expansion will introduce a new energy source to 18 cities (including Patra, Ioannina, Kastoria, Florina, Grevena and Orestiada) and increase the customer base served by Enaon from the current 615,000 to 920,000 by 2030.
Following his side's qualification to the ICC World Test Championship final for the first time, South African skipper Temba Bavuma called it an "emotional moment" for him and hilariously remarked that he was "in the toilet" during the match-winning partnership between Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen towards the end. South Africa continued their brilliant run in ICC tournaments as after the final of ICC T20 World Cup this year, they have booked for themselves a spot in the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord's next year. Speaking after the match in the post-match presentation, Bavuma said, Let us know! 👂 What type of content would you like to see from us this year? "Quite an emotional moment for me. Lot of joy and happiness on our side. We did the hard way. But glad we won. I was still sulking in the toilet. Aiden (Markram) get them going. Was not a lot of conversations. We still had the confidence. I did not come out to the viewing area and was in the toilet. I came when 15 runs were needed. It is a big win. Not just for myself. But for the coaches." "The way we started our campaign against India. We were not given much of a chance. We were not ruthless. But we kept finding ways. We hope the guys can get confidence from performances like these. Guys get picked on when they do badly. We would like to enjoy the moment and take stock of what we have done," he added. Rabada- Jansen sealed WTC final seat for South Africa Coming to the match, South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl. Half-century from Kamran Ghulam (54 in 71 balls, with eight fours and a six) took Pakistan to 211/10. Dane Paterson (5/61) and Corbin Bosch (4/63) were the top bowlers for Proteas. Proteas gained a 90-run first-innings lead as a half-century from Aiden Markram at the top (89 in 144 balls, with 15 fours) and a terrific unbeaten 81* in 93 balls, with 15 fours by Corbin Bosch took them to 301. Khurram Shahzad (3/75) and Naseem Shah (3/92) were the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan. Later in Pakistan's second innings, a drought-breaking fifty from Babar (50 in 85 balls, with nine fours) and Saud Shakeel (84 in 113 balls, with 11 fours and a six) took Pakistan to 237/10. They secured a 147-run lead. Marco Jansen (6/52) was the top bowler for Proteas. In chase of 148 runs, Proteas were restricted to 99/8 despite knocks from Markram (37 in 63 balls, with six fours) and skipper Bavuma (40 in 78 balls, with four boundaries and six) by Mohammed Abbas (6/54). However, a 51-run stand between Kagiso Rabada (31* in 26 balls, with five fours) and Jansen (16* in 24 balls, with three fours) pushed Proteas to a landmark win. Humble beginnings and willingness to learn more helped Joseva Mudu attain his role as the Sabre catamaran captain. South Sea Cruises Group is Fiji’s leading maritime operator providing a range of stunning day trips, resort transfers and cruises in the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands of Fiji. The new cruise on the new South Sea Sabre catamaran service travels out of Port Denarau in Nadi and takes a maximum of 70 passengers through the Mamanuca group. The father-of-three hails from Naivakarauniuniu in Kadavu with maternal links to Vunisei, also in Kadavu. Mr Mudu has worked for the South Sea Cruises Group for 20 years. “I started in 2005 as a security guard, and then I worked as a deckhand. I was given an opportunity to further my education at the Maritime Academy in Suva when the Fiji National University was still FIT (Fiji Institute of Technology),” he said. “I now have a class 5 master’s qualification, which is for captains.” Mr Mudu enjoys the relaxing atmosphere out at sea. “I wake up at 5.30, leave home around 6am, arrive at Denarau at 6.30am, then we go to our respective boats. “Depending on the boat, I could be the captain on one boat and the second officer on the other.” After conducting the necessary checks, he informs the captain that the boat is ready for boarding. Guests are given five minutes to board. While work can be strenuous at times, Mr Mudu loves socialising with the tourists daily and he also cherishes the bond he shares with his workmates. “We really take care of each other because we work in a small space, so we must look out for each other, and that’s one mindset that will never leave me. “We are out at sea for most of our lives, so it’s important to have a positive mindset.” Mr Mudu said his career required dedication and discipline. “During natural disasters, we never know what our guests’ mental state is. Some can handle it while others feel weak. We have to try to calm them down, and at other times the weather may be too cold, but apart from that, work is great.”

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski took questions from reporters on Sunday regarding the 20-3 loss to the Dolphins , Dorian Thompson-Robinson, injuries, and more. Below is the transcript as provided by the Browns media relations department: More Cleveland Browns coverage Browns running back Jerome Ford gives update after suffering ankle injury vs. Dolphins ‘Dorsey not getting the criticism he deserves’: What a former Browns CEO said after Cleveland’s loss to the Dolphins Dorian Thompson-Robinson outplayed by former Browns QB Tyler Huntley as Browns lose 20-3 to Dolphins to fall to 3-13 Week 18 NFL Preview: Find everything you need to know with our Week 18 NFL preview. Opening Statement: “Okay, injuries; Jerome (Ford) has an ankle injury, Denzel (Ward), shoulder, Jordan Hicks, concussion. So we’ll update the rest of the guys as we see them today and tomorrow. Obviously not good enough. We got to come away with a win, got to come away with taking care of the football, putting ourselves in position to go find a way to win and we didn’t do that. That’s the disappointing part. The results are what they are, that’s frustrating. But with that, I’ll take any questions.” You had a decision to either kick or go for it from fourth and goal from the three. Why did you decide to go for it instead of taking the points? “Yeah with just that field position, I think it’s really important to get the seven there from the three-yard line.” On those fourth downs, I think you guys were 0-4, I know the one was in the endzone. But did you see anything on those three? I know on the other three, I know those are huge plays in the game. “I mean a turnover on downs is a turnover. I know it doesn’t officially go down as a turnover but you’re putting your defense back there on the field and you got to come through. When it’s fourth and one, advantage has to be toward the offense and you have to come through there.” I saw you talking to Dorian (Thompson-Robinson) on the sidelines after the pick. Obviously an ill-advised throw from him there. What did you see there? “Yeah, I think obviously you’re always, at every play, you’re looking at it and thinking about the decision and the accuracy and all those things and just making sure that he’s understanding in those roles when you have to locate defenders. I think that was really the biggest thing there on that play.” Why is he struggling with some of the real, short, basic stuff, whether it’s throwing out of the backfield, throwing it into the flat, not even just going down the field, but just seems he’s really struggling with timing on those shorter routes? “Yeah, we’ll look at it, and it’s not for lack of effort. He’s putting in the work. We’ll look to help him in any way we can to score some points.” You were determined to have him finish this game. Why? “Just felt like that’s what was best for the team.” I know it’s early, but will you start him next week in Baltimore? “Yeah, I won’t get into anything for next week, Mary Kay (Cabot).” On the intentional groundings, I know it’s not just on the quarterback, but does he have to sort of, in those situations, is there something he can do to avoid those? “Certainly you want to avoid those. Those are big penalties with the loss of down and the yardage. So, we’ll continue to coach him up. And there’s obviously, as everybody knows, there are certain times that a sack is okay. You don’t love it, but sometimes you have to do that. It’s like anything with the young quarterback teaching when to throw it away, when to make that decision. So we’ll keep coaching them.” How do you get your guys ready with one game to go and things looking so bad? How do you get them ready to play a team like Baltimore next week? “Yeah, it’s no different than every single week, Jeff (Schudel). It’s the NFL. It’s a privilege to play in this league, it’s a privilege to coach in this league. We love the competitive nature of these games. It’s a division opponent. That’s just how we operate.” Myles (Garrett) got two sacks to get to that 14, making a little history. Just one of the few positives from today. Just what can you say about the consistency he brings in every game week in and week out? “Yeah, plays hard. I think he got real close on a few field goal block attempts as well, and I think that’s a great measure of how hard you’re playing, is how hard you go on that unit. He’s given us everything he’s got.” You were a fan of Snoop (Tyler Huntley) throughout the preseason and all of that. But what did you see in Tyler today? “Yeah, I mean he made a great play there on that third down. We brought everybody, he made somebody miss and natural ability took over. But obviously he made a few plays today.” You guys have obviously supported Dustin (Hopkins) through his struggles this season, but seeing him make that field goal, what did that just mean for him confidence wise? “Yeah, like we’ve talked about with Dustin, always worked through this with him. He’s a veteran, he’s kicking it really well in practice. Obviously just had that one opportunity in this one, but a veteran that we really trust.” Fans will take consolation in moving up to number three in the draft order. How do you feel about that? “Yeah, I have no comment on that, Tony (Grossi).” How about with Denzel (Ward)? Do you think he could be lost for next week? “Yeah, it’s way too early to tell on injuries.” Pierre (Strong Jr.) looked like he left about two minutes left. “Yeah, evaluating him for a head injury, but I don’t have any information past that.” When did the injury to Denzel occur? Because we found out about it while you guys were on offense to start second half. Was it late in that...? “I believe it was right at that last possession in the second quarter.” I know it’s all been disappointing, but the fact that you go 2-6 at home, you talked about trying to come out of here with the win. Just what’s that frustration level like, especially after going 8-1 last year at home? “Yeah, we’ve got the best home field advantage in the NFL with our crowd and how into it they are. We haven’t done enough as a football team to keep them into it. So that’s the frustrating part. I really wanted to get this one for them in this building being the last one at home, so it’s frustrating.” Obviously, you committed to getting (Jerry) Jeudy the ball, 18 targets. Is that the number you envisioned? “Jerry’s our best player on offense. We’re trying to get him the ball any which way we can.” Football Insider newsletter free trial: Take a minute and sign up for a free trial of our Football Insider newsletter, featuring exclusive content from cleveland.com's Browns reporters.
