Soprano Angel Blue sings her first Metropolitan Opera 'Aida' in a new production Angel Blue, one of the most admired singers of her generation, is headlining the Metropolitan Opera’s first new production of Verdi’s “Aida” in 36 years. The 40-year-old takes on the title role of the enslaved Ethiopian princess torn between love for an Egyptian warrior and loyalty to her country. It’s a part that comes weighted with history, especially for a Black soprano at the Met, where Leontyne Price embodied the role from her first performance in 1961 until her retirement in 1985. Blue tells The Associated Press she’s long looked up to Price, and directors who have worked with her say the singer is ready for the challenge. Blue’s Met debut in ‘Aida’ will happen New Year’s Eve. Centuries-old angels uncovered at Boston church made famous by Paul Revere BOSTON (AP) — Conservators have uncovered eight angels in a historic Boston church that counted Paul Revere as a bell ringer and played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War. The angels were painted in the early 18th century but painted over in 1912 as part of a renovation of the Old North Church. Inspired by research showing the existence of at least 20 angels, conservators for the past four months have been removing the white paint that covered the eight angels located on the balcony's arches in the church sanctuary. The public is now able to view them. Swiss Olympic snowboarder Sophie Hediger dies in avalanche, aged 26 Swiss Olympic snowboarder Sophie Hediger has died following an avalanche at a mountain resort. Magic and lights draw crowds to an alpine village in Washington state for Christmas LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) — Freshly baked pretzels, shining tree lights and sleds in the snow lend a ruddy warmth to an unlikely collection of Bavarian-themed chalets in the mountains of Washington state. Decades ago, the town of Leavenworth was a near ghost town, one of the poorest parts of the Pacific Northwest. The mines and the sawmill had closed, and even the railroad left. That’s when desperate business owners took a serious gamble -- reinventing the community in the vision of an alpine village. More than half a century later, the result brings tourists from near and far -- especially during the holidays, when Leavenworth takes on the flavor of a German Christmas market. Prosecutors withdraw appeal of dismissed case against Alec Baldwin in fatal movie set shooting SANTA FE, N.M. The actor had been charged in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal on a movie set outside Santa Fe in October 2021. Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey withdrew on Monday the appeal of a July decision at trial to dismiss the charge. The decision to drop the appeal solidifies the decision by Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer halfway through trial to dismiss the case on allegations that police and prosecutors withheld evidence from the defense. An all-Filipino crew is set to make history in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race SYDNEY (AP) — There have been plenty of “firsts” in the history of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race which was first held in 1945. An all-Filipino crew of 15 sailors will make it another when the annual ocean classic begins in Sydney Harbor on Thursday. With veteran sailor Ernesto Echauz at the helm, Centennial 7 will embark on the 628-nautical mile race. The boat itself is no stranger to the race. Another factor contributing to the divide between Barcelona's core players and the club is the management's handling of key decisions. The departure of club legends like Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, and Neymar, coupled with controversial signings and managerial changes, has left many players feeling unsettled and uncertain about the club's direction. The lack of a clear vision and long-term strategy has only deepened the sense of mistrust and discontent within the team, as players question the motives and decisions of the club's hierarchy. The official announcement of the Boss update has reinvigorated the player base, sparking a renewed sense of enthusiasm and passion for the game. The journey to stardom has been a rollercoaster ride, marked by moments of triumph and setbacks, all of which have shaped her into the confident and resilient individual she is now.Kings assistant Doug Christie will be elevated to take Mike Brown‘s spot on the bench following Brown’s dismissal , according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, who reports ( via Twitter ) that Christie is Sacramento’s new interim head coach. Christie, a former NBA shooting guard, spent five of his 15 seasons as a player in Sacramento. That five-year stretch from 2000-05 was the most successful run of his career, as he started all 355 games he played and earned Defensive Player of the Year votes for a Kings team that won at least one playoff series in four straight years. After retiring as a player, Christie spent some time as a color commentator for Kings game before being hired by the franchise as an assistant during the 2021 offseason. Christie was hired under Luke Walton, remaining in his role as an assistant when the club parted ways with Walton and promoted Alvin Gentry to replace him during the 2021-22 season, and again when the Kings hired Brown in 2022. Although Christie has never formally held a head coaching position, he has gained some experience on the job, having stepped in for Gentry in December 2021 when the Kings’ interim coach missed time with COVID-19. Christie also coached Sacramento’s Summer League team in 2024. It’s unclear when the Kings plan to launch their search for a permanent head coach and whether Christie will receive serious consideration for the full-time role. Unlike traditional pension schemes, which are often tied to a specific employer or industry, personal pension plans allow individuals to carry their savings with them throughout their career and adapt their contributions based on their financial situation and long-term goals. This flexibility not only empowers individuals to take control of their retirement planning but also ensures greater resilience in the face of economic uncertainties.
(Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Wednesday to hear a bid by TikTok and its China-based parent company ByteDance to block a law intended to force the sale of the short-video app by Jan. 19 or face a ban on national security grounds. The highest U.S. court did not immediately act on a request for an injunction to halt the looming ban. Here is what will likely happen next for TikTok. WHAT’S NEXT FOR TIKTOK IN COURT? The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on Jan. 10, just over a week before the ban is due to take effect on Jan. 19. TikTok and its parent ByteDance aim to block a U.S. law passed in April that would force ByteDance to divest of TikTok or face the ban. TikTok also has asked that the court issue an injunction to put the ban on hold while the legal process plays out, but the court has not yet acted on that request. The social media company has argued that the law would harm free speech. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled in favor of the government on Dec. 6, citing national security considerations related to China. Last year, TikTok took similar legal actions to stop a ban on the app in the state of Montana, where a preliminary injunction was granted. HOW DID THIS START AND HOW LONG WILL THIS ALL TAKE? In August 2020, then-President Donald Trump sought to ban both TikTok and Chinese-owned WeChat, but was blocked by courts. In June 2021, President Joe Biden withdrew a series of Trump-era executive orders that sought to ban new downloads of WeChat and TikTok. However, legislators later advanced a bill that compelled ByteDance to divest or face a ban. It passed with wide margins in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. To be considered a qualified divestiture, the president must determine TikTok is no longer controlled by and would have no operational relationship with a Chinese entity. When Biden signed the bill in April, a 270-day clock started. That clock ends on Jan. 19, but the process could be extended by court review. DOES TRUMP HAVE A ROLE HERE? Trump becomes president on Jan. 20, the day after the U.S. law indicates a ban would start. If Biden certifies a path to a qualified divestiture has been identified, there is evidence of “significant” progress toward a sale and there are legally binding agreements in place, he can authorize an additional 90 days for any deal to be finalized. The additional time would throw the final decision to Trump, who has said he has a “warm spot” for TikTok and will not allow short video service, which is used by 170 million Americans, to be banned. If the Supreme Court does not halt the law before it takes effect, it is not clear how Trump, once in office, would be able to affect the matter. TikTok in court papers raised the possibility that the new administration would “pause enforcement” or seek to mitigate its potential consequences, although at least one senator has noted that Trump cannot ignore the TikTok law. U.S. tech companies could face billions of dollars in fines if they allowed users to access TikTok after Jan. 19 and even if Trump said he would not enforce the law, they could face potential risks from others who might seek to enforce it. WILL TIKTOK CHANGE AT ALL? The TikTok app should not change for its U.S. users between now and Jan. 19. WHAT DOES THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT SAY? China has a list of technologies that would need Chinese government approval before they are exported. Experts said TikTok’s recommendation algorithm would fall under the list, making divestment very difficult for ByteDance.
